Covington Catholic is now two full seasons off of their last trip to the football state finals, with their 2024 season ending in the 4A semifinals, and their 2025 season ending in the 4A quarterfinals.

Highlights from the 2025 season include a solid 17-10 win over Cathedral High School from Indianapolis, as well as a 36-29 road win over a very strong Johnson Central squad in the second round of the 4A playoffs. They also had strong performances in their losing efforts against Elder, whom they lost a hard-fought 28-20 battle to in Week 2, and against Highlands when the Bluebirds bested the Colonels 31-28 in Fort Thomas.

Cov Cath graduates the best running duo their team has ever had share the offensive backfield in QB Cash Harney and RB Dylan Gaiser, as well as 4 of their 5 top receivers and multiple of their starting offensive linemen. On defense they also are losing linemen, as well as linebacker Brady Guard and defensive backs Cash Harney, Logan Sanning, Dylan Gaiser and Zach Brooks.

The question of coaching changes is also looming as the team heads towards spring practice. Offensive line coach Joey Ledonne has accepted the school's alumni director job and will not be returning to the football coaching staff, and with the Newport Central Catholic head coach job currently sitting open there's an abundance of conjecture about defensive coordinator Terry Brown leaving to take over the football program at his alma mater.

Looking to 2026, though, some of the returning contributors we can likely expect to see on the gridiron for the Colonels:

DEFENSE

Defensive Line: Jonny Lind (Sr.), Landon Robinson (Jr.), Colin Vinson (Sr.), Miles Woolf (So.) Spencer Clukey (Sr.)

Linebackers: Cash Myers (Jr.), Jackson Payne (Sr.), Evan Link (Jr.)

Defensive Backs: Mac Cogwell (Sr.), Jace Thornton (Jr.), Brandon Smith (So.), Dylan Courtney (Jr.)

OFFENSE

	Quarterback: Dylan Courtney (Jr.)

Running Backs: Kiyan Miller (So.), Jace Thornton (Jr.)

Receivers: Mac Cogswell (Sr.), Dylan Courtney (Jr.), Jamir Kirtley (So.), Jason Fedor (Sr.), Grant Reardon (Sr.)

Tight Ends: Owen Pitzer (Sr.), Spencer Clukey (Sr.), Cash Myers (Jr.)

Offensive Line: Jonny Lind (Sr.), Landon Robinson (Jr.), Colin Vinson (Sr.)

Kickers: Logan Zembrodt (Jr.), Eli Robertson (So.)

BE ON THE LOOKOUT

Offense - Dylan Courtney saw more offensive snaps as backup quarterback last year, but Evan Link, Thomas Van Auken, and rising sophomore Charlie Hull have also had strong performances behind center in their careers at Cov Cath. Evan Link's size and athleticism may make him more useful elsewhere on the offense, and he will almost certainly be contributing heavily on defense, as well. Upcoming sophomores Micah Grace and and Carson Grainger are more than likely to make appearances on the varsity field for Cov Cath, as well, potentially at tight end. As a freshman starting on the varsity squad last year, Brandon Smith showed that he was more than qualified to play on defense, and although he didn't see much playing time on the offensive side of the ball, it wouldn't be out of the question to see him contributing on offense this year. Donovan Eviston also saw limited varsity playing time as a freshman wide receiver last year, as did freshman lineman Miles Woolf.

Defense - Jason Fedor and Jace Thornton will likely be showing up in the defensive backfield, as will incoming sophomore Jamir Kirtley. Incoming sophomore Carson Grainger is likely to be a regular on the varsity linebacking corps. Oliver Dalton, Parker Payne, Ashton Feinauer, and Mack Deters are a few more rising sophomores you can definitely look to see contributing on the Colonel defense in the upcoming season.

Special Teams - Logan Zembrodt would certainly seem to have field goal and PAT duties on lockdown after going 59-59 on PATs and 4-4 on field goals in 2025. Graduating senior Tanner Robertson handled most of the kickoff duties last year for the Colonels, but younger brother Eli Robertson did a strong job with all place kicking duties for the freshman team last year, so it will be interesting to see whether or not Cov Cath continues to have a Robertson handling kickoff duties.

SCHEDULE

The 2026 schedule has only been partially released on Arbiter at this point so we haven't seen everything 100% confirmed as of yet, but assuming this year's schedule is all the second year of two-year home and away contracts, it will be as follows:

Aug 21 vs. Ryle
Aug 28 vs. Elder (OH)
Sep 4 vs. Simon Kenton
Sep 11 at Dixie Heights
Sep 18 vs. Beechwood
This is a much talked about topic. Figured why not bring it on the forum and get more opinions.

Right now in June, (late May), Basketball can play as many games as they want.

Meanwhile, football can only lift and workout in June but nothing organized. (Every practice is organized but I digress)

If you look to neighboring states Tennessee is full throttle on football in June.

The KHSAA saying that the state “gives” football July is one of the biggest misconceptions out there. Football “has” to have July because the season starts in August. Couple that with the refusal to adjust dead period dates to a Sunday-Sunday format and this year in July teams really get around 7-8 days to acclimate and crunch 7v7 work in before they have to shift their focus to installing and getting real football reps in the preparation of the season.

This is something that I believe truly holds Kentucky back from developing football more in the state. Football isn’t the reason kids don’t get time off. Basketball and baseball go year round basically yet football is the only one constantly under the microscope in KY.

From my understanding the June rule hasn’t been revisited since before 2010. Look at all the new blood and coaching changes each program has had since then.

It’s time to revisit June football restrictions in our state. June is the perfect month for heat acclimation with helmets and to install your base offense and defense (which most schools do anyways)

	I'm baaaaaaack!

SO SORRY to have been away the last couple of years/seasons!! Serving as the executor of my parents' estate turned into a multi-year, 7-day-a-week job. Combined with my real job, and some pesky health issues, I was pretty much out of action for everything else.

Now....the estate is almost completely resolved, I'm semi-retired from Blue & Co., LLC (working 3 days a way; full retirement is looming at January 31, 2027), and - well - the health issues are still there, but they are manageable.

I've missed you guys.....hopefully, I'm going to find that many familiar names are still in BGPreps country.

	Meanwhile....

The PEGASUS SPORTS NETWORK is also BACK! PSN will broadcast each and every Oldham County football game in 2026, home and away! For football fans, you'll be pleased with all the changes to the broadcasts, including a 4-camera setup, instant replays, etc. Having a 6-man crew means I'll be able to concentrate on play by play only instead of having to produce the broadcast at the same time. Former North Oldham coach Jamie Brown returns as the color commentator.

Looking forward to seeing Coach Jamie Reed's second Oldham County team. His first went 6-5, but I know that won't be enough for Reed. He'll be looking for improvement in 2026, which may be a challenge with what might be a team depending a lot on some youngsters. Much more to come on that....

Coming off of a successful 2024 campaign, which saw CAL complete a state championship three-peat, the Centurions had a lot of questions to answer with the loss of 3 D1 commits and 3 more high D1 recruits. The 2025 version did not disappoint by being Kentucky's only undefeated team and capturing the school's 4th straight 3A state title. As is the case with almost all teams, CAL will have some production to replace from a senior class that went a perfect 20-0 in the state playoffs and ended each year of their high school career at Kroger Field, hoisting a KHSAA state title.

🎓LB - Jacson Settle, RB - Jeffrey Vazzana, RB - Tyree Stoner, DB - Stone Perkins, OL - Zach Wampler, OL/DL - Jason Hilliard, TE/DE - Micah Akin, LB - Chapman Russell, DB - Trey Hardin, DL - Brody Cherry & LS - Alex Glin

🔙WR - Ja'Hyde Brown, QB - Jackson Burke, DL - Kellan Hall, WR - Gaines Howard, LB - Micah Newsome, LB - Gabe Lumpkin, DB - Jayson Ruffin, DB - Eric Jones

With the talent coming back in 2025, CAL looks to make another run at a 3A state title, bringing the consecutive total to five and putting them in elite company of Kentucky high school football history. CAL will need to replace almost all of their production in the offensive run game, however, that might not be a problem with the addition(s) coming in next year. On defense, CAL will need to replace 6 starters, but with leading tackler LB Micah Newsome and Rivals top 10 2028 recruit Kellan Hall anchoring the defense, CAL should be able to do so without much of a drop in production.

2025 proved to be a tough season for Graves County with a 4-7 season against one of the toughest schedules in the state. The Eagles were able to keep the wheels on the bus by beating a solid Union County team and winning their last 3 regular season games with a good win over McCracken County that not a lot of people thought they would win.

The good news is they are returning the entire offense expect 1 starter but are getting back a returning starter from a knee injury to step into that spot on the OL. The OL will have 7 players with starting experience returning and were extremely young last year and with another year in the weight room there should be improvement there. All of the skill players are returning as well and it should be a very deep and talented WR core with depth in the backfield as well and a QB who is playing in the same offense 2 years in a row for the 1st time in his high school career.

The defense will lose 4 starters and replacing Hunter Ditto will be tough but Graves always finds guys to step up on the defensive side of the ball and I wouldn't expect anything different. Graves had a pretty good defense last season and with a majority of those players returning I expect that unit to be better as well.

It is year 3 for Coach DeBernardi and his staff and after last season their ability to keep the team together with the schedule and the injuries they sustained expectations for this team should be high. Graves has a lot of things moving in the right direction with the new sports facility going up that will include an indoor practice facility and weightroom and rumors of a new grass playing surface and rubberized track being installed for next season. They also have talent at the lower levels coming up with their 8th grade team being very good and a complete class with lineman and skill positions. The schedule will still be tough like always but look for Graves to be a tough out this season.

The Knights ended their 2025 in one of the more thrilling playoff games as they lost to Murray 20 - 14 in overtime. They finished 10 - 3 and had one of the most remarkable regular season wins in the state this year as they took down Boyle County 17 to 7 early in the year. They only allowed 8 points to be scored on them in district play and their stout defense, which had been relatively inconsistent in 2024, absolutely smothered teams.

We can expect the Knights to roll through the district again this year, but what about the bigger picture? Brady Wasik is graduating and that will be an absolutely massive blow. He was the leading passer with 1,238 yards, 16 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. He was the leading rusher 976 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was also the fourth leading tackler.

Gannon Rudacille looks like the most likely option at quarterback. Eric Smith and Jack Wedding were the top options out of the backfield when it wasn't Wasik rushing the ball. They both should be back. Jonathon Harper, the leading receiver, is also back.

On defense, Wedding returns representing the 2025 tackles leader for the Knights. Mark Hosinksi also returns. He led the team with 6 sacks. The secondary also appears to remain formidable as both Baird Woodall and Ethan Bradford return. Between them they had 7 interceptions.

There are huge question marks offensively for the Knights, but there is little doubt they will still have one of the more dominant defenses in 3A.

The 2025 season came to an end exactly the same as the last two years for the Campbellsville Eagles football program... With a loss in the State Semi-Finals game to the eventual State Champions... Let's Be Clear... Its a bitter pill to swallow... BUT, this outgoing Senior Class leaves a Legacy... Fourty wins in four years ties the Best in School History and adding a Three Peat as Class A Region Champions... There have been only 7 Football Region Titles in school history and this group won 3 of them... There were individual superlatives for sure... But it always came back to the TEAM EFFORT... Good Luck to these men as they complete their secondary education... Several will continue their career at the next level and will be ready... One thing is for sure... The accomplishments of this group of Seniors will be Hard to Replicate... But that's the Standard...

	GRADUATION (12): #7 Kace Eastridge (QB-LB), #6 Gabe Noyola (WR-C), #55 Bryson Turpin (OL-DL), #44 Cole Kessler (TE-MLB),#62 Keke Miller (OL-DL), #1 Braylon Beard (WR-S), #15 Rowan Petett (WR-S), #77 Rooster Smith (OL-DL), #17 Zach Holley (WR-C), #71 Westin Dudgeon (OL-DL), #23 Aaron Johnson (WR-C), #80 Brad Paris (WR-S)

The 2026 Eagles will return 12 Juniors and 12 Sophomores (RETURNING STARTER> Offense 6 Defense 5) that all saw significant reps during the season... It will be interesting to see who winters well as the train keeps rolling... This group is continuing to grind in the weight room and has some individual superlatives as well... But togetherness and TEAM are at the center...

The standard is the standard, and we have to work hard to continue to climb... The culture is Great and Coach Estes and Staff are looking into 2026 with excitement and ready to Begin Again... Thanks to those that provide and run Bluegrasspreps.... It is a Great Tool for High school football in general... This a Great Community...

Here we go, year 6 of the Sphire era Highlands Bluebirds. We have seen the Birds accumulate a record of 47-17 in the 5 years with Coach Sphire at the helm, twice making it to the State Semi's (23 & 24). Unfortunately, that isn't the standard that Fort Thomas expects. State Championship Trophies are what people in Fort Thomas expect from one of the most winningest programs in the country. The drought has been long, it has been since 2014 when a new trophy was placed in the Trophy case all shiny..... It is getting unfortunately a little dusty now. We have come so close especially in 2023 when I believe Highlands made it back on top of the 5A rankings during the Regular season, the fan base felt like the tide had turned and a visit to Kroger Field was imminent only to be dealt a heartbreaking loss to a NKY foe Cooper Jags in the Semi's on a cold November Friday night.

Will THIS year be the year that the stars align and the Birds make a trip south to Kroger Field to add to the Trophy case?

Here is my take on the 2026 Edition of the Highlands Bluebirds

When I think about the 2026 Highlands Bluebirds, one word comes to mind: ATHLETES! Coach Zitt, the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator (& RB coach) at Highlands has these young men looking like machines. The Strength program in my opinion is one of the biggest pieces of Highlands football that was missing in the years prior to Coach Zitt.

The 2026 Birds are going to have a TON of skilled position players that they will have the opportunity to as Will Stein says "Feed the Studs".

Other than losing Rio Litmer which is a huge loss losing a QB that threw 252 of the 289 passes in 2025, but other than Rio you basically return your whole running back room and your receiving core.

Here is the run down on these rooms:

Running backs: Tayden Lorenzen led the team in '25 with 541 yards rushing with 18 TDs, right behind him on the stat sheet is Colt Kremer who really progressed nicely in '25 only being a Sophomore, rushing for 432 yards.

Receiving core: John Feldbrugge led the team in '25 with 505 yards receiving, right behind John is Cale Harris with 331 yards and then Tayden Lorenzen with 321 yards receiving.

The Birds will also hopefully get a healthy Gabe Williams back who missed the last 6 games of the season with a back injury.

QB room: This will probably be the biggest topic at the water cooler in Fort Thomas in the off season, but maybe not. Who will get the keys to the Offense? Will Coach Sphire go with the upcoming Young Gun stud Bryce Armstrong who razzle dazzled the offense in the Freshman and JV games. He is the REAL DEAL but can he lead a Varsity team as a Sophomore to the "Promise Land"??? Or will there be some pressure to have a more older bigger player in Tayden Lorenzen drop back in the pocket and sling away like his father did back in the late 90's for the Birds?

Weakness: With all these returning skilled players and athletes running around the ball the biggest question mark I have to believe on this team is interior lineman. Graduating the likes of Max Merz, Mason Howard and the other IOL/IDL I will be interested to see who might be replacing these big boys in the trenches.

With the interior lineman a big question mark, what won't be is the highly recruited Twin Tower Edge rushers in Cooper & Griffin Benke. These 2 have had the height of men for the last couple of years and have been getting stronger and wider in the last 12 months, it will be very interesting after another off season what their bodies will look like suiting up on Friday nights in 8 months. Not a lot of teams are going to have success running around the edges in 2026 versus the Birds.

Rising star watch out: Nick Stojkovic, will be a Sophomore this upcoming 2026 season. It will be interesting how the program uses him. I believe in the Freshman/JV teams he has played RB on offense and LB on defense. This kid has looked like a stud since Kindergarten. Every time I see him around town he looks bigger and bigger. His body type reminds me of a Brycen Huddleston body type. The next 3 years will be fun to watch him grow within this program. The future is very bright for that young man.

2026 Schedule.. I haven't seen an official schedule with dates but I believe everyone we played in 2025 should be on contract for 2026, therefore here is the home/away opponents how it would line up:

Home: Cooper, Boyle Co, Harrison Co, Elder, Mason Co

Away: Frederick Douglass, Campbell Co, Ryle, Covington Catholic, Scott Co

Let the discussion start..... What have I missed? Any other names we should be looking forward to seeing? Who you have as QB1?

	#GOBIRDS!!!!

Tough lessons are often the best ones, and that is what I am counting on.

While Bearcat Football continues to improve, the results have been disappointing. And, as is the case when you are the head coach, the first place to look when the results are not what you want, is in the mirror. My two biggest mistakes going back to April of 2023:

1- I overestimated how much offense we could handle.

2- I underestimated how much structure we needed.

We are restructuring our offense to be simpler and to build off the things we do well and fit our skill set. We put together program standards for the weightroom, classroom, workouts, practices & pregame.

I realized in October of this season both mistakes I had made. We didn't wait until 2026 to start to address them. We started taking steps immediately and we are already better for it. Coach Mike Kirschner, formerly of Warren Central HS in Indianapolis, gave me some great feedback on our standards and we think they will really help our guys.

One of the best things we have done, especially considering the snow that has hit us, SQR before Christmas. Stack Quality Reps. We got over 18,000 reps of basic fundamentals knocked out at the end of 2025.

Recruit Night went well and we are hoping to get 20 freshmen for 2026. Our freshmen have won the conference the last two seasons.

Recruiting for HS guys has never been tougher. Instead of competing against other 18-19 year olds, HS guys are now competing against guys, 18 - 25. And, most of those older guys have collegiate reps and video. But, we are continuing to fight the good fight. And, we may start going the California JUCO route for guys that really want to play college football but have few other options.

The Truck Stick route / Feed The Cats has been really good for us in regards to Strength & Conditioning. Our brand new weightroom is barely a year old. Already, the ability to incorporate more landmine exercises is paying off for us. We can bend better, flip our hips better, and generate more explosiveness & power.

Player Development(more skill/fundamentals reps) workouts will continue through the end of February. Spring football will begin immediately after basketball season.

2026, our roster should be around 75 guys again. Our depth, experience & talent level should be improved. If I think too much about the results, it wears on me, bad. But, when I think about our "one day/rep at a time" process and the people I work with (players, staff, Bosses, community) not sure anyone has a better job than the one I have coaching the Bearcats.

If you want to jump in a time machine, come to Bob Ware Field this fall. Old School environment. We play on Bermuda grass. No track. The bleachers/fans are right on top of the field. Very cool place. If you do show up, holler at me in the pregame. We take the field a little after 6:30 every Friday night for specialties.

My first time on that field was with my Dad. Boyle at Anderson, 1971. Was a great place 55 years ago and Friday Nights are still very special at Bob Ware Field.

Arguably the best team on Trinity's schedule next season. The Red Raiders are the reigning Tennessee Division II-AAA state champion, capping a 12-0 season with a win over Brentwood Academy and earning the #16 ranking in MaxPreps’ national poll.

Coach Eric Kimrey is a relentless winner, boasting a 194-20 record and 13 state titles between his time in South Carolina and the last four years at Baylor School. Since arriving in Tennessee, he's led the Red Raiders to a 45-6 mark and championships in 2022 and last year.

They'll be favored to repeat with the return of David Gabriel Georges, the nation's #2 rated running back according to 247 Sports. He holds offers from the usual suspects: Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Texas, among others.

Keegan Croucher has transferred in from Connecticut to fill the void at quarterback. Croucher is 6’4” and committed to Ole Miss.

Braxton Rein is another heavyweight talent, rated by 247 as a Top 50 overall player in the country for the upcoming junior class. He's a 6’6”, 230 pound edge rusher with offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Clemson, Texas…. you get the picture. Baylor School has some dudes.

Trinity runs from no one, and the Rocks' willingness to play the best has lured Baylor School to St. Matthews on September 11th for what should be a clash between the #1 teams from Kentucky and Tennessee.

Coming off a season that saw Glasgow graduate a large and influential senior class, the Scotties enter 2026 with 14 seniors departing, but still carry high expectations for the program moving forward. While experience must be replaced in several key areas, Glasgow returns proven leaders, impact underclassmen, and a schedule that will test and define them.

	🎓 Graduating Seniors (14)

	Jerrick Martin (Missouri State signee)

Trace Smith, Cameron Bulle, Hudson Gumm, Grayson Bartley, Landon Martin, Jeremiah Moore, Steven Garrett, Peyton Lemily, Ashton Page, Xander Contreras, Javion Twyman, Keavian Massey, Jared Malagon

That group leaves behind a strong legacy, particularly on the defensive side of the ball and in leadership within the program.

	🔙 Key Returners & Outlook

Offensively, much of Glasgow’s optimism centers around what will be known as “The Triplets” — Jaylan Bradley, Landon Holley, and Jordan Huffman . All three will be seniors and are expected to be major contributors and leaders. Their experience, versatility, and familiarity with the program give the Scotties a strong foundation heading into the season.

The junior class is loaded with upside and could ultimately determine how high the ceiling is in 2026. WR/DB Kaebran Jones and WR/DB Keyshawn Austin are both poised to grow significantly in expanded roles and give Glasgow speed and athleticism on the perimeter. Jaithan Franklin (RB/LB/DL) brings physicality and toughness on both sides of the ball and should see increased responsibility. The silent factor to watch is the experience of the offensive line, with many of the linemen who saw quality playing time last year returning.

A major addition comes in Junior Bowling Green transfer Kyle Sledge (S/LB), a physical presence who fits Glasgow’s defensive identity well and is expected to make an immediate impact. Looking ahead, sophomore Trevis Collor is another young name to watch as he works his way onto the field and gains valuable varsity experience.

	❓ Biggest Question

The defense will be the biggest storyline entering the 2026 season. With significant graduation losses, new leaders must emerge quickly, and consistency will be critical early in the year. How fast this unit comes together could be the deciding factor between a good season and a special one.

Despite graduating a large senior class, the 2026 Glasgow Scotties are far from rebuilding. With an experienced senior core, talented juniors ready to step forward, and impact additions in key spots, Glasgow enters the season with high hopes and belief that the standard remains the same. They got ousted in the second round this past year, but are working hard already, coming in every morning before school and getting extra work in. They have plans for a deep playoff run this year coming. Unfortunately only 3 home games will be very detrimental for the season as a whole. They are wishing for some home playoff games.

	Hatchell to lead Cardinal Football

The new head of Mayfield Cardinal Football is a name long familiar with the program. Offensive Coordinator Stephen Hatchell has been tapped to lead the storied team.

“On behalf of the Mayfield Independent School District, I am honored to announce that Stephen Hatchell will be the next head coach of the Mayfield High School football program,” said Mayfield High School Principal Matt McMain.

Hatchell has served as Offensive Coordinator for the Cardinals since 2016. He started his coaching career with the team in 2007 first as the quarterback coach, then as the Cardinals Offensive Coordinator from 2008-2013. For the 2014-2015 seasons, Hatchell moved to Georgetown, South Carolina, where he was a quarterback coach then Offensive Coordinator there before moving back to Mayfield where he resumed his OC duties.

Hatchell says he is excited to lead the team, “I would like to thank the hiring committee for giving me the opportunity to be the next head football coach at Mayfield High School. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly.” He added, “This program has a rich history, and I am excited to build upon the strong foundation already in place. My family and I love this community and are thrilled to continue to serve our school and community.”

McMain says the school district, the community, and the football program have a strong tradition of excellence, “Coach Hatchell knows this legacy and is committed to maintaining that standard. I am excited about the future of Mayfield football with him at the helm.”

Once a student-athlete himself, Hatchell played on the collegiate level. Hatchell was on the quarterback roster for Murray State University from 2001-2003, then for Campbellsville University from 2004-2005.

Hatchell also serves as vice principal at Mayfield High School. He and his wife, Tyler, have a daughter, Zoey, and a son, Zander.

Looking ahead, Coach Hatchell says to the players, parents, and alumni, “I will work tirelessly to make you proud both on and off the field. I am excited about the future of this program and my role in helping our young men become the best version of themselves. GO CARDINALS!"

The expression drips with equal parts hyperbole and irony.

	“Game of the Century”

It implies one game only, but college football has featured many of them over the last hundred years.

	Just to name a few….
Army vs. Navy in 1945
Notre Dame vs. Michigan State in 1966
Nebraska vs. Oklahoma in 1971
Ohio State vs. Michigan in 2006
Alabama vs. LSU in 2011

There's no black and white criteria that defines the “Game of the Century”. The label only requires a hook: it could be a state championship game, regular season contest, or anything in between. A duel between #1s or #1 vs. #2. Hype… anticipation. A dash of rivalry spice sprinkled over for good measure. Something extra that transcends the four quarters of play.

The first game on this list should need no introduction….

(2002 Class 4A Championship at Old Cardinal Stadium)

🗞 | With the weathered carpet outlined by the remnants of a December snowfall, a clash of #1 (T) and #2 (H) unfolded with the ’Big School’ state title on the line.

The battle within the war played out with Brian Brohm and Michael Bush painting a symbiotic masterpiece, piercing the frigid air with one dagger after another.

The numbers boggle the mind, still. The two quarterbacks combined for 1,136 yards of offense and 14 touchdowns. The 115 combined points obliterated the previous state finals record by 38.

Someone had to lose, and it was Male that ran out of time after nearly rallying from a three score deficit in the fourth quarter. Bush was picked off at the Trinity 1 with 1:11 remaining to seal it.

The game also served as a crossroads for two coaching giants. Male's Bob Redman coached for several more years, but never again reached the state finals, while Bob Beatty was just getting started. This was the second of his record fifteen titles in St. Matthews.

If there was ever one, true “Game of the Century”, this was it.

🗞️ | The most distinguished chapter of the HHS/CCH odyssey, memorably penned on a canvas of muck and mire.

Never before or since has the field of play been as synonymous with a single game.

With the regular season encounter resulting in a two point Highlands win, attempts to envision the outcome of the rematch were as clear as mud. Jared Lorenzen and Kirt Doolin were among the all-timers rendered nearly unrecognizable by the slop caked on their uniforms.

CovCath appeared on the verge of ruin, down three scores before trudging all the way back to force overtime, then another.

Lorenzen rolled right before faceplanting under pressure in the mud on fourth and goal, allowing CovCath an opportunity to walk it off on the game's final possession, which they did on a run right up the gut to end it in double overtime.

The win catapulted the Colonels to a state title two weeks later, the fifth and final of Lynn Ray's illustrious career.

Highlands would of course regroup the following year and assemble one of the greatest NKY teams ever, but that night in Fort Thomas belonged to the visitors from Park Hills.

Highlands and Covington Catholic combined to win seven state championships in the 90s, but during that era of the rivalry, they seemed to be competing for something greater…. the championship of each other. Perhaps never more so than that night.

Mayfield was equally devastating on the gridiron during that time, claiming the 2A crown the same year.

The stage was now set for the 73rd edition of the state's second oldest rivalry, unique in the fact that both teams entered the game as defending state champions for the first and only time in the storied history of the series.

This era of the rivalry was full of competitive games and 1986 lived up to its billing.

Down by seven late and looking to tie, Tilghman was driving inside the red zone. The Cardinal rush got home in the nick of time, leaving an attempted pass up for grabs at the line of scrimmage, where it found a home in the arms of a Mayfield defender.

The mystique of War Memorial at work, perhaps?

Whatever the case, top ranked “Big Red” won and went on to repeat as 2A champions, the second back-to-back of Jack Morris' legendary career.

🗞️ | The skull and crossbones meets the wishbone.

The irresistible force and the immovable object collide in a battle of #1s between, arguably, the two greatest teams in the history of EKY.

Belfry had ruled 3A with an iron fist for three years and JC returned the house from its 4A runner-up a year earlier. They weren't just the best in their respective classes, they lapped the field.

Philip Haywood and Jim Matney unleashed hell on each other that night. There was no holding back. No pulling punches.

It was trench warfare, the likes of which could shift tectonic plates.

The statistics suggested that JC was the superior force, but the home team struggled to finish drives. The only number in Belfry’s favor was the only one that mattered in the end… the winning score in a heavyweight battle royale.

The Pirates sailed onward to complete a four-peat of 3A state titles, while JC recovered for a historically dominant rampage through the 4A playoffs, manhandling its five opponents by an average score of 52-3.

The stars were in alignment for both schools that season and in particular, that night for EKY’s “Game of the Century”.

🗞 | Two teams, one town.

In the early 2000s, it was big enough for both of them.

It was a convergence of dynasties; Sam Harp's Admirals, winners of five titles and the defending champions of 1A versus Chuck Smith's Rebels, the reigning back-to-back rulers of 2A.

Boyle County, with its modest population of less than 30,000, had suddenly become the epicenter of football in Kentucky. It's still the unofficial capital of the sport.

Danville had been a powerhouse for decades, but the county school was making up ground at a feverish pace. The Rebel uprising culminated in a once unfathomable 47-0 pasting of Danville a year earlier, forcing the Admirals to their back heels.

Vaunted Admiral Stadium served as the battleground with Danville digging those heels in for a four quarter war. Boyle escaped with a three point win to extend its winning streak to 33 games, but the Ads held up their end to elevate the rivalry to heights seldom seen.

It was a perfect storm of past (reigning champions), present (highly competitive game), and future (both repeated as champions that season).

🗞 | A more spirited conflict does not exist within our border than the one shared between the Purples and Spartans.

The eponymous flagship school in Warren County had been largely unchallenged for many years before the South rose.

The young rivalry has seen many twists and turns, but the stakes were never higher than on that late November night.

South took down top ranked BG with a fourth quarter comeback in the regular season meeting, and as they so often do, found their way back to each other in the playoffs.

The first two times BG touched the football resulted in kickoff return touchdowns before the offense ever took the field.

It was tight throughout, before the Purples found some breathing room late. South had one last possession to tie or win the game, but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.

Bowling Green had exacted its revenge, a prelude to the program's ninth championship.

There may be another “Game of the Century” or two still to come in the state's greatest contemporary rivalry.

Every year as one season ends and high school football teams look ahead to the next, the first thing is take inventory. Key players graduate. How many? Who will replace them? That leads us to try and define what next year looks like most often as reboot, rebuild or maybe reload. For the 2026 Beechwood Tigers, despite losing in the state semi finals, the word for 2026 is repeat. There is a talented and deep group of players returning from a team that was the 2A state champion in 2024 and fell a 2 point conversion of returning to the title game in 2025. In 2025 the Tigers lost one regular season game to their rival Covington Catholic, and then lost that state semifinal game on the road to state runner up Owensboro Catholic when a two point try for the win fell short. It was an excellent season led by arguably the top offense in 2A.

Repeat? When the Tigers didn't win a state title? That is what defines success for a season at Beechwood. But so often we all know a state championship often comes down to a couple plays. There are a few plays that Beechwood doesn't want to repeat, but if they repeat everything else it will be another great season and very well can lead to another state title.

Key Losses: This is why it isn't rebuild or reboot. Beechwood returns the vast majority of last year's team. The key losses are standout DE Chase McDaniel, two way starter RB/LB Brody Aylor and top linemen Austin Stephenson and Carson Eshelman. The Tigers also will need to replace excellent PK Colson Lair.

Who Returns: Every skill position player except Aylor. This may be the most talented and deep returning group of skill players I can recall at Beechwood. D1 recruit QB Emmett Queen, D1 recruit WR/S Tyler Fryman (ranked #4 player in KY), RB/WR/CB Nathan Pabst, TE/DE Bo Sowder, WR/S Caleb Arrasmith and others. The leading rusher, the top 7 receivers and 6 of the top 7 tacklers on defense all return.

Outlook: With all of that firepower returning, repeating 2025's production is certainly a reasonable expectation, even for the state's #1 scoring offense and #1 in scoring margin. The Tigers do have one challenge. It is almost always the same every year for Beechwood - the line of scrimmage. Beechwood plays a big boy schedule. Finding the size at the line of scrimmage to compete with the 6A and 5A teams is always the challenge. Who will step in to those losses in the line is the challenge for Beechwood in 2026. But programs like Beechwood do a great job building depth and turning young men into very good football players over their 4 years. There are players who have been waiting their turn and this year will be their time to step in. The Tigers will be a state title contender in 2026. Developing that line of scrimmage very well may be what makes the difference between a semifinal loss and another state title.

The Panthers are looking to rebound after a tough State Semifinals loss to the Raceland Rams. The Panthers return pretty much the house from last season excluding a star wide receiver, a couple lineman, and a linebacker. They only lost 7 seniors from 2025 team. The Panthers 2026 Schedule will look like this.

Here we go… Year 1 of the Dustin Trimnell era for the Scott Eagles. After finishing 3-7 in 2025 and missing the playoffs with a 5th place district finish, there is definitely a different feeling around Eagle Stadium heading into 2026. Nobody around Taylor Mill is pretending the turnaround happens overnight, but there is real belief that Scott football is finally moving in the right direction again.

The expectation around the program is simple: compete every Friday night, get back into the playoffs, and bring Scott football back to a winning record for the first time since 2021 when the Eagles were still in 4A. From everything coming out of offseason workouts and spring ball, this staff has brought a completely different energy and attention to detail to the program. One of the biggest things I’ve heard from people around the team is how much more invested this coaching staff is in developing players on BOTH sides of the ball, especially defensively where Scott has struggled at times over the last few seasons.

When I think about the 2026 Scott Eagles, the word that comes to mind is EXPERIENCE. The junior class has a ton of varsity reps already under their belts, and now the question becomes whether that experience can translate into wins.

The biggest loss for Scott is obviously QB Trey Cook, who threw for over 2,500 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2025. Replacing that production is not going to be easy. The Eagles also lose Ben Smiddy, who will continue his football career at Thomas More. Losing leadership and production like that always leaves questions heading into a new season.

But Scott definitely returns some serious talent.

Justin Hardy returns at TE/LB after finishing top 50 in 5A receiving with 40 catches for 539 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hardy is one of those players who can impact the game on both sides of the ball and should be one of the leaders of this team.

Lucas Tomlin also returns after rushing for 443 yards and 5 touchdowns on 93 carries. Tomlin plays with a physical edge and could end up being one of the more important players on the roster because of the versatility he brings at RB/LB.

Another major weapon returning is Peyton Zinser. Even though he only played 8 games last season, Zinser still hauled in 28 catches for 466 yards and 7 touchdowns, finishing top 50 in 5A receiving. If he stays healthy for a full season, he could put up some huge numbers in this offense.

Other impact returners include Nash Overholser, Kaydenn Marshall, Malachi Snapp, Colton Turner, and Jonah Rector. From what I’ve heard, Kaydenn Marshall has had a really strong offseason and spring ball and looks ready to take a big step forward as one of the more explosive athletes on the roster.

The quarterback situation will probably be one of the biggest storylines going into the summer. Nash Overholser appeared to be QB1 throughout spring ball and took all the reps during the Scott spring game. He seems to have the early lead heading into camp. But one name people keep bringing up is sophomore Zane Murphy. Murphy could potentially see snaps at quarterback or be moved around to another skill position just to get the ball in his hands.

One thing that seems obvious already is this coaching staff wants competition everywhere.

Speaking of the coaching staff, this is basically a complete reset for Scott football. First-year Head Coach Dustin Trimnell brought in an almost entirely new staff, including longtime NewCath defensive coordinator Dave Meadows and offensive coordinator Kevin Eichmann from Turpin. The amount of experience on this staff is impressive, and honestly, it feels like there is finally a real vision for what Scott football wants to become.

The biggest concern for this team probably isn’t talent — it’s adversity. What happens when things go wrong during a game? Last year, Scott had veterans like Trey Cook to steady things when momentum shifted. Now the Eagles have to figure out who steps into that leadership role. That is something that can only really get answered on Friday nights.

The schedule is definitely challenging, but there are several games that feel very winnable. Matchups against Clay County, Bullitt Central, Grant County, Holmes, and Boone County could ultimately decide whether Scott reaches the postseason.

The game everyone already seems to have circled is the October 8th matchup against Boone County. There’s a very real chance the loser of that game could end up on the outside looking in when playoff time arrives.

	2026 Schedule:

Home: Campbell County, Clay County, Boone County, Conner, Holmes

Away: GRC (scrimmage), Bishop Brossart (scrimmage), Bullitt Central, Grant County, Bourbon County, Dixie Heights, Cooper

Realistically, with a first-year staff and a tough district, a .500 season would be a strong step forward for this program. But more importantly, Scott fans want to see the Eagles become competitive again every single week.

The culture change has started. Now the question is whether the wins will follow.

Let the discussion begin… Who steps up as the leader of this team? Can the Eagles get back to the playoffs in year one under Coach Trimnell?

Just 2 points away from a trip to the state championship and one of the biggest wins in school history and unlikeliest wins in Kentucky high school football last year. But it wasn't to be as Corbin fell to Boyle County in the state semifinals. The week before Corbin had stunned the Highlands Bluebirds at home. Corbin started the year 3-3 but quickly gained steam heading into district play and kept it the rest of the year. They rode a 7 game winning streak into the Boyle County game.

2025 Corbin was such a balanced team. On offense they were almost equal in average passing and rushing yards. Mason Salmons had 30 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. He returns. He is also the returning rushing leader as stud running back Cole Stevens is graduating. Salmons also loses his top 2 receivers in Stevens and Cam Estep. There are definitely holes to be filled but how can you not be excited when Salmons will again be taking the snaps.

The Redhounds look to retain most of their tenacity and skill on the defensive side of the ball from 2025. Leading tackler Silas Mahan returns. Sacks leader Malachi Brown returns. In fact, only 2 of the top 10 tacklers are gone to graduation. With Estep and Lucas Brittain graduating they will have to rebuild some in the secondary and will look to Trey Person as their anchor.

I hope Corbin can carry over all the excitement the end stages of 2025 brought them. They certainly have stars on both sides of the ball capable of being catalysts for another successful year.

From Letcher County Central High School on Facebook:

After 10 seasons of dedicated leadership, Head Football Coach Junior Matthews has announced his retirement. We are grateful for the time, commitment, and passion he has given to our football program, and for the growth and success achieved under his leadership. We wish Coach Matthews the very best as he steps away to enjoy more time with his family.

The search for our next head football coach will begin immediately as we work to identify the best candidate ahead of summer practice. We look forward to the continued growth and future of LCCHS football.
