Kentucky's Biggest High School Rivalries In Any/All Sports - Help

Recommended Posts

Certainly I have to go with Saint X and Trinity. back before Trinity was its biggest rival, the rivalry was Saint X and Flaget, both schools run by the Xaverian Brothers.

Saint X and Male has remained strong over the years, but not so much so is the Saint X and Manual rivalry.

Mal v. Manual is among, if not the oldest rivalries in the country. I think it is more traditional than competitive now.

Paducah Tilghman and Mayfield in football would have to be a top 3. The game made the National High School Game of the Week back in 1989 on SportsChannel America.

I remember watching it. 🙂

In the 8th Region for basketball, thinking split county schools Shelby County/Collins.  Definitely Gallatin County/Owen County, Trimble County/Carroll County, Henry County/Eminence.

20+ years ago, the Grant County-Williamstown rivalry would be right there, if not ahead, of these.  If the game was at W-town, it would standing room only, with the stage curtain opened, so they could put people up on the stage.  Parking would overflow the school's lot and people would be parked out in the grass alongside the street.  It was an electric environment.  Now...not so much.

Here are some more of the bigger football rivalries. I tried to tag some of the folks who tend to comment in threads involving the schools mentioned.

Graves County vs. Mayfield - Mayfield is the county seat of Graves County, so the rivalry comes naturally. GCHS opened in 1985 after 6 schools were consolidated into 1. Mayfield has always generally ruled the rivalry when it comes to football, but Graves tends to rule the rivalry when it comes to hoops.

Boyle County vs. Danville - Danville is the county seat of Boyle County, and has a football program that is one of the oldest in the state (1912). Boyle County High School opened in 1963. This has been a major rivalry in all sports between the two schools, but especially on the football field. @Rebel @Rebelstat @BEChargers @DanvilleFan @Shaquille_Oatmeal might be able to help out with details on this one.

St. Xavier vs. Flaget @Tigerpride94 @Tigercat @Xtiger69 @LongTimeReader @Tigers20-22 @Tigers88

St. Xavier vs. Trinity @SHAMROCK69 @NLTanker1 @JIM SEYMOUR # 85
Played since 1956. Trinity leads 48-39-2.

Lexington Catholic vs. Lexington Christian @Big Things Kentucky @Johnny_Utah @Tigerallamerican

Hoptown vs. Madisonville-North Hopkins @Big Fletch @Region2 Hype Man @Westernside @TylerDurden @WKY_Football @KingDeuce @tackle trap

Scott County vs. Frederick Douglass - This one is new, but heated. @16thBBall Fan amirite?

Feels like a program as old as Owensboro has to have a pretty major rival there around Owensboro/Daviess County...or maybe is their rival Henderson County? @Brown @Devils Fan @ApolloFan98 @zoneblitz2 any input here?

I was scrolling through senior profiles for LCA and an overwhelming majority of the seniors state that there greatest memory was attending the LCA vs LC football games. It definitely brings the juice!

Sorry to be late to the party!

But as far as West Ky rivalries, the Christian County vs. Henderson County, Colonel Bowl has always produced some fun matchups. It’s always a can’t miss in a regional tournament.

Augusta - Bracken County in basketball.  Particularly with the draw/seeding controversy in the 39th.

Although they don’t hate each other enough to pull for Mason County when one of them plays the Royals.  That’s when they call a truce.

Another interesting hoops rivalry back in the day was Rowan County and Breckinridge Academy.  It was considered to be the County boys versus the privileged professors’ kids, and there was no love lost.
