BGP QOTD: How do you pronounce the word....

...."Appalachia"?

Does it sound like "apple-ay-shuhh", or more like or "app-a-latch-a"? Or something else?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from the folks from the more eastern portion of our fine Commonwealth.

Growing in Ohio, I usually heard the "shuhh" version, but after moving to Kentucky, have heard the "latch-a" version more.

I texted my wife (who's from Martin County), and she said the 2nd one as well.

The second is the closest for me, but I don't really say it like latch-a, I pronounce it more like latch-ia in general.

Latch-uh if it's just the word by itself.

It’s pronounced “Appa-latch-cha”. In most of the Appalachian Mountains and the South it’s pronounced that way. The cell phone company that serves eastern Kentucky, Appalachia Wireless, pronounces it with the “latch” sound in all their TV and radio commercials.

The name is derived from a southern Native American tribe call Apalachee.
