Harmon ineligible?

Recommended Posts

Semantics. I don't expect a school to police each and every person who's ever been associated with a school but if they are actively involved, be it booster members, coaches, teachers, etc., and they're recruiting, that's out of bounds.

The one from Glasgow I have heard is not eligible. His mother got a job at Warren Elementary the week before school was to begin (which you'll know that school is walking distance from Central), and they had not yet moved. So it was struck down. Boyd moved back from Adair County and I had heard that Central was not necessarily his first choice, but that's where he landed. He is eligible.

As I said, I do not expect a school to turn down a kid who decides they want to come there. I've repeatedly said that I'm not even telling you all that it's wrong to think that a kid should be able to go wherever they want for whatever reason. I do believe it is more complex than that, but in a perfect world, it would be exactly that. We do not live in a world that is perfect or as simple as you all would make it.

Thanks for the info. I knew Warren Central had two kids come in and was curious about their status. Had they stayed or been eligible then Warren Central likely becomes a top 5 team in the state.

Define recruiting.

Is me talking to Zion’s father about moving to Danville and coming to Boyle County considered recruiting? If so, how is that against the rules? If I don’t give them anything but my realtor’s number and they move is that recruiting? All I did was help them find a home. I didn’t give them any money. I just gave them a number of someone who can help them move. What if I know someone who is looking for a nurse and I point him in that direction? Is that recruiting?

I don't think Warren Central is top 5 if they're both eligible. Maybe region favorites though. If Potter were still around - and he will not turn 19 until late into next basketball season so it wouldn't be out of the norm for him to actually be a senior this year - then that'd be different. Micale Mee was in the exact same boat age-wise. With just Boyd they're probably #2 in the region, contenders, but I think Bowling Green remains the favorite in that situation.

I'm tempted just to say that that recruiting is like that old saying about pornography (and I feel weird to make the comparison) - hard to define but you know it when you see it. I don't know what your association with Boyle County is, but if you were a teacher, member of the booster club, coach, something official with the school and you did what you're talking about, yes, you recruited him. From the first moment that you made contact and said you should come to Boyle County. The others are more smoky to me. If you passed along contacts and that was it, it's not really the same. If you called up the realtor and said hey, I've got a guy coming and I need you to cut him a deal or get him a job, then it's more that you facilitated it, which would be recruiting.

Smoky is the perfect word. I could navigate around all of those parameters with ease.

Exactly. And I know it would be difficult to prove that I did anything wrong as well.

I agree. That doesn't make it any less wrong, and I assume that you're not advocating that schools and associates should be allowed to openly recruit. Is the argument that why deem anyone ineligible because it's so hard to prove?

Nah. That’s never been my argument. My argument has always been that if a kid is academically eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity then let him play. 99.9% of the kids have zero control of the situation around them. It isn’t fair to punish them.

I do think that with the rules in place and worded as they are I’m not sure how anyone can prove without a shadow of a doubt that someone is being recruited to play for a high school athletic team. Speculation is one thing. Proof is another. The way the bylaw is written if someone physically moves and proves they have moved then let them play.

I honestly don't think they will hire attorneys based on the dads statement about accepting the decision of the committee and moving on, earlier in the year. Then again, things may have changed after hearing the verdict and having moved and such. I'm guessing he goes off to prep school. Man, talk about a way to ruin your high school experience, this kid has lost any semblance of a fun childhood and I hope he is a victim to the system vs being a victim to a dad that's been moving him around for bball.

Joe Jackson of the West Kentucky Star broke the story that Zion Harmon’s appeal was denied.

If the family moves to another district, such as Louisville or Lexington, buys or rents a home and finds work, is his son eligible at the new district?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding this case but I assume the reason the KHSAA has been strict in this latest transfer with Harmon is his dad let it be known in social media that the move was made for athletic purposes. That’s definitely a no-no in the KHSAA rules.

It’s a case by case decision. I’ve seen kids move away from their whole family and be ruled eligible.

I must have missed that part of it. I don’t remember his dad saying they moved for athletic purposes.
