Harmon ineligible?

I would like to agree with this, but I can't now that sports have become more important than school to so many kids and their parents.

Athletics are going to be the way A LOT of those kids "make it," not academics. So I have zero issue with it.

And even if it's not, they're still getting an education, so why do people care?

Right. It's not like these kids that are choosing a school just because of sports don't have to go to school and don't have to make the grades. They still have to do the work.

Almost any kid who is going to make it because of athletics doesn't need to transfer. There are few exceptions. The only exceptions I see are if a kid has an even better player in front of him that will prevent the kid from getting playing time.

I don't necessarily disagree with that statement. But I still think any player should be able to transfer when/where they want.

Zion Harmon has a GPA over 3.5 last I saw. But because his family moves yearly and he is a talented basketball player folks are in an uproar about their nomadic ways. If education is the most important issue and the kid has a 3.5 or above GPA along with no control over whether his family moves or not then him not being allowed to play is extreme IMO.

Sounds like a heck of a kid.

Would anyone care if he was the star of the academic team instead of basketball?

Has anyone ever come up with a reason for his moves? Personally, when you look at what schools he has transferred to, it doesn't look like moves made because of athletic reasons. Why all the moves?

Didn't someone say his Dad is a traveling nurse?

I'd also add...Why does the reason matter?

All I know as fact is that his dad is a traveling nurse and that they have moved yearly because his occupation allows it. I have no idea at all why they moved but I have heard some of the innuendo surrounding it. I’m sure I’ll never know the truth but Zion has gone from Baltimore to Nashville to Bowling Green to Columbia to Benton. At the very least he will be an extremely diverse human being who has experienced life in many different environments. That is an education that even a school can’t provide.

And for the record had he ended up at Scott County or Covington Catholic I would still fully support his transfer 100%.

Schools don’t recruit. People tied to the schools recruit.

Didn’t Warren Central get at least two transfers this offseason? Isn’t one from Adair County? Are those transfers that Warren Central basketball received this year eligible?

Semantics. I don't expect a school to police each and every person who's ever been associated with a school but if they are actively involved, be it booster members, coaches, teachers, etc., and they're recruiting, that's out of bounds.

The one from Glasgow I have heard is not eligible. His mother got a job at Warren Elementary the week before school was to begin (which you'll know that school is walking distance from Central), and they had not yet moved. So it was struck down. Boyd moved back from Adair County and I had heard that Central was not necessarily his first choice, but that's where he landed. He is eligible.

As I said, I do not expect a school to turn down a kid who decides they want to come there. I've repeatedly said that I'm not even telling you all that it's wrong to think that a kid should be able to go wherever they want for whatever reason. I do believe it is more complex than that, but in a perfect world, it would be exactly that. We do not live in a world that is perfect or as simple as you all would make it.

What do you mean by incentivize? If you're talking $$, obviously not. I'm not really sure what else you could mean.

Yes, most things would tie back to money in some way. Hire a parent as a coach, get them a job within the district, hook them up with an apartment to move into, give them some free stuff, etc.

I was simply saying that I don't think fining a school for the amount of transfers they receive makes sense as a solution. But that people tend to also have a problem with the concept of a school recruiting. So if a kid "should be able to attend whatever school he, or she, desires" and that desire came about because they were recruited/provided incentives to do so, then I consider that out of bounds.

And again, I'm not saying that was what happened here. I'm saying it is an example of why I can't get on board with this "well heck, just let them go wherever they want" mentality.

How is it any more complex than that?

I've posted on it, you and PP92 clearly do not agree. There's not really anything more I can say on the subject. At this point you either see it as that simple, or you don't. I want you to understand that I get where you're coming from, but I do not view the subject as night/day as you see it. And that's fine.
