Cooper 13 Newport Central Catholic 7

Recommended Posts

Interesting how so many NCC posters believed the Breds would win easily. While Cooper’s offense is still working out the kinks, the defense is playing lights out. They’ve given up 7 points in two games. If they need to win ugly then so be it. Congrats to the Jags for finding a way and best of luck to NCC the rest of the way.

Wasn't pretty, but its a win. Defense for Cooper was effective. 7 points in 8 quarters of football. This defense starts up front. 72, 53, 62 battle.

I read in a thread earlier this week that it was predicted that NCC's Oline would take care of Cooper's Dline. That was not the case. No answer for Cooper 72. The 3 d-lineman open things up for the 8 behind them. Impressive.

Offense is sputtering but showed life in the second half. Again, the trenches belonged to Cooper.

Cooper had a 13-0 lead under 6 minutes to go. NCC battled back and had a chance at the end zone to tie or take the lead with 30 seconds to go from the 15 yard line, just came up short.

72 for Cooper was a man on the DLine. Lee was a huge factor in the second half, when Cooper went to Wildcat formation with him.

22 Runyon had a great 2nd half for NCC, 13 Jefferson for NCC had a few more big catches, and 5 Ackerson had a great night on DLine.

NCC defense played well most of the night, although it was a very sloppy first half for both teams on offense.

Good win for Cooper, tough loss for NCC who never quit.

So NCC hung with a 5A team and beat a 6A team. I'd say they won't lose many more games this season. It's safe to puff their chest they are only a 1A team after all. Cooper on the other hand should be worried how many games they'll actually win this year. Their schedule is pretty tough from here out.

I see all but 3 games as winnable with 3 more extremely likely wins. The rivalry games vs. Conner and Ryle are usually close.

So far Cooper beat Beechwood 24 to 14 controlling all 3 quarters of their normal game conditions scrimmage. Yet people considered Beechwood the third best team in NKY going into last night. People seemed to think NCC was better than Cooper going into last night, with some predicting NCC to win by double digits, and Cooper won again. Dixie showed last night with their nice win over GRC that they were a better team than people want to give them credit for and a nice win for Cooper over them. Yet somehow there is still comments like this saying they may not win much more? I think Cooper has shown they are going to be one of the best defensive teams in the area this year. Then offensively they should just keep getting better and better as the year goes on as their sophomore QB and RB get more and more experience. Especially past history suggest Cooper is one of the better teams in the area at truly improving as the year goes on and playing their best by the end of the year.

As for NCC they are a good team and they should have a great chance to truly compete for a state title in 1A this year. Good size, and speed.

If NCC doesn’t run through 1A there is a problem. NCC played a good game.

Let’s put this into perspective though. Cooper’s offense hasn’t even come out of the blocks yet. If and when Cooper gets the offense going, they can cause problems for many teams on this schedule. What is going to be interesting is when everyone doubles up Lee and then they realize there are several other weapons available.

Cooper defense is playing well. Better tackling and some more physical play from guys and they will be a real force to deal with.

NCC will have a great season. They battled Friday night. Best of luck to both teams.

Please define "run through 1A". If you are talking about their district, probably yes but Ludlow will not be a pushover. if you are talking about running to a state title in 1A, the answer is no. NCC is ranked #5 in 1A and that is probably about right based on what we have seen so far.

If referring to all of 1A in the state I wouldn’t say that yet. Pikeville just beat the top 5A team in West Virginia by 40 and Paintsville beat Beechwood over the weekend. Newport Catholic is definitely in the mix though.
