Which football programs made the best new hires for head coach this year?

Featured Replies

Alright, let's keep this discussion positive, y'all.

So we all know that there was a windfall of football coaching jobs that turned over this year. From the best info I've been able to dig up, this is the most jobs we've had turn over in Kentucky on record (
I've found fairly complete sources going back to the coaching changes going into the 1979 football season). With a 48 year average of 38.7 jobs turning over per year, that puts us significantly above average this year. The average number of job turnovers each year for the previous 25 years is 43.2, so that makes this year a little bit easier to swallow, but it's still a disturbing trend, all the same.

There were some VERY prominent jobs that opened up this year, though. Saint Xavier, Male, Beechwood, Mayfield, Central, Newport Central Catholic....there's quite a pile of state titles among the trophy cases of those schools.

So looking at the complete list, what's your take? Which programs do you think made the best job with their hire? Do you expect to see any particularly notable changes happening at any of the programs, in particular? Were there any coaches whose names raised your eyebrows when you saw their name pop up in their new job?

And again, POSITIVITY here, folks. These coaches have a tough enough job on their hands, as it is. They don't need anyone tearing them apart before their first season in their new gig has even started.

I think it is tough to top Mercer County and Beechwood on this list.  For Mercer Co, luring away Travis Burns from a team that was in the 5A state championship game last season is a tremendous accomplishment.  For Beechwood, being able to bring back a champion pedigree coach to replace a champion pedigree coach shows that they will always fight to remain on top of the standings.

On the opposite side I'd say you have to consider Gallatin Co.  I'm not going to dive into that one out of respect, but it shows the problems they've had this offseason when they've gone through 2 hiring processes.

Gosh, NKY had so much turnover. I definitely think Beechwood was the top of that heap but NCC and Brossart both got tremendous alumni hires that should provide a huge boost. Also a fan of the Honaker hire at Campbell.

Jeremy Harness is a great hire for John Hardin. He graduated from John Hardin in 2012 and was part of a football program that went  40-3 in his last three years in the program. In his senior season, he rushed for 1562 yards with 447 receiving yards. That team was beaten in the state semifinals on a Bowling Green hook and ladder in the waning moments of the game.

He knows what it takes to return John Hardin to an elite program and become a destination school for football in Hardin County.

I'm going to say Conner made an excellent hire in Chase Floyd. A long time assistant at various NKY schools and definitely knows the game and truly knows everything there is to know about overcoming adversity. Conner will be blessed with an extremely young but VERY talented group of players that have bought in to the new, and VERY EXPERIENCED, coaching staff. Couple these items along with the deep connection that Coach Floyd has established with the extremely talented MS team (especially the 7th, to be 8th grade team, and Youth programs, the future is bright. I know the new field house and weight room is one of the best in NKY!

Wishing Coach Floyd the absolute best and hoping things keep progressing in Hebron and players, and parents, want to "stay home" and bring Conner back to glory.

The two obvious ones are Beechwood and Mercer County. One thought that I think people will look back on in 5 years and talk about what a great hire it was, is Rick Honaker at Campbell County.

For what NewCath is trying to do, Terry Brown is above anyone else.  Rash is walking back into a taylor made position.  I admittedly don't know much about Mercer or Christian.  I do know that NewCath just graduated a class of THIRTY-TWO students and was on death's door.  There were 11 players on the middle school team in 2024.  Since then, the school's administration's dogged push to improve the school and facilities has begun to yield fruit.  For the first time in history, they had a separate 7th grade team.  This Freshman class has over 90 students.  The stadium opens.  The renaissance began 2 years ago and is now set to pick up steam.  Getting the PERFECT hire to guide the football program to match the momentum of the school was paramount.  NewCath got that.  I don't believe the record will reflect this this year.  I'm concerned about their lines.  2027 and beyond, I look for NewCath to be back to where it was at the beginning of the century.

I would cast my two bits for Mercer Co.

Honaker is going to be a very interesting follow for me. So many people have sung his praises over the years. He will have talent to work with at Campbell County.

Most success as a new hire IMO will be:

Noel Rash (State Championship or bust?)

Josh Roberts (5A Runner Ups, return a ton off that roster)

Brian Landis (IMO will bring a toughness and edge to X)

I forgot about Brian getting the X job.  Toughness and an edge is very apt. I worked with him a couple times a summer while we were all in college.  Some guys you know are tough just by the energy they carry.
