Saint Xavier names Brian Landis head football coach

Featured Replies

Per Jason Frakes on X: "Brian Landis, former Frederick Douglass coach, named new football coach at St. Xavier. He coached at Alpharetta (Georgia) High School last season and has been an assistant for several college programs."

Key Points:

- Brian Landis has been named the new head football coach for St. Xavier High School.

- Landis replaces Kevin Wallace, who retired after going 72-28 in eight seasons with the Tigers, including a 2021 state title.

- Landis previously led Frederick Douglass High School to a 35-5 record and a state final appearance.

- Landis: assistant coach at Georgetown (2001, 2004-2014), Eastern Kentucky (2015) and Kentucky (2016), head coach at Frederick Douglass High School (2017-2019), assistant coach at Georgia State (2020-2023) and West Georgia (2024), head coach at Alpharetta High School, Georgia (2025).

Congrats on the hire,

He looks the part - like a "tuff Football Coach."

I talked to some of the football players and they had good first impression of him after he met with them. He seems to have a lot of energy so I'm looking forward to see where he takes the program.

That quote was from current Frederick Douglass coach McPeek that previously coached for him.

Congratulations to Coach Landis!

Good luck going forward!

Great hire!

Genuine question here: If Jay Cobb stepped down at Trinity would Landis get a call back for an interview? I'm just really puzzled by this hire. St. X is easily the top job in the state from a resources standpoint and a top 3 job overall. I realize that they were not put in a great situation by Wallace, but you had an entire year to find your guy and they picked a guy who was 2-8 last year and has *some* college experience as an assistant?

I have no doubt he interviewed well and maybe they see this as a rebuild of sorts, but with that locker room and jumbotron and whatnot on the way, I figured they wanted to make a splash hire here...

I really do want them to be good and a consistent rival, and maybe Landis can do that...But this all seems like a stretch.

He took Frederick Douglass to state championship after building the program from scratch. The AD talked to coaches in Georgia and they said it was a 6A school without 6A numbers plus a tech heavy area that traditionally doesn't get a lot of players for football but he had improved them from year before and was building to be better next year. I think he's a really good hire but time will tell for sure.

Color me shocked! I did not see this one coming. ?

The fact that he didn’t win a state championship at Douglass in 5A with their roster tells me everything I need to know about coaching ability. D1 Talent for days and not really anything to show for it. In my opinion X could’ve done much better. Only time will tell but I would think that this was a move to get his family back into Kentucky and that he will rejoin the college ranks as soon as the opportunity presents itself.
