Hatchell to lead Cardinal Football

The new head of Mayfield Cardinal Football is a name long familiar with the program. Offensive Coordinator Stephen Hatchell has been tapped to lead the storied team.

“On behalf of the Mayfield Independent School District, I am honored to announce that Stephen Hatchell will be the next head coach of the Mayfield High School football program,” said Mayfield High School Principal Matt McMain.

Hatchell has served as Offensive Coordinator for the Cardinals since 2016. He started his coaching career with the team in 2007 first as the quarterback coach, then as the Cardinals Offensive Coordinator from 2008-2013. For the 2014-2015 seasons, Hatchell moved to Georgetown, South Carolina, where he was a quarterback coach then Offensive Coordinator there before moving back to Mayfield where he resumed his OC duties.

Hatchell says he is excited to lead the team, “I would like to thank the hiring committee for giving me the opportunity to be the next head football coach at Mayfield High School. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly.” He added, “This program has a rich history, and I am excited to build upon the strong foundation already in place. My family and I love this community and are thrilled to continue to serve our school and community.”

McMain says the school district, the community, and the football program have a strong tradition of excellence, “Coach Hatchell knows this legacy and is committed to maintaining that standard. I am excited about the future of Mayfield football with him at the helm.”

Once a student-athlete himself, Hatchell played on the collegiate level. Hatchell was on the quarterback roster for Murray State University from 2001-2003, then for Campbellsville University from 2004-2005.

Hatchell also serves as vice principal at Mayfield High School. He and his wife, Tyler, have a daughter, Zoey, and a son, Zander.

Looking ahead, Coach Hatchell says to the players, parents, and alumni, “I will work tirelessly to make you proud both on and off the field. I am excited about the future of this program and my role in helping our young men become the best version of themselves. GO CARDINALS!"

I think you will be a good hire for Mayfield. He's been with the program for a long time. My oldest son was playing when Hatchell came to the program. All three of my sons have played for him.

I think I said in a previous post he was a front runner 2 years ago when Coach Joe retired and may have been wrong according to a post someone made but I said this time he was a obvious choice for Mayfield and to continue the tradition and storied history of this program. Congratulations to coach and Mayfield on this hire. Are you ready for some football?

Whew, busy Monday, just now catching up to the big news of the day. Congratulations Coach Hatchell! Ok, it is time to rally around our new coach because we’ve got some work to do! Thanks for posting this Guru. ?

I have always credited Hatchell with being the guy that transformed the Cardinals offense away from the 3 yards and a cloud of dust to what it is today. In 2009, the Cards were down big to a reigning 2 or 3 time TN state Champion Trousdale County, TN. with no answers to keeping up with their high powered offense when Morris, with nothing to lose, turned the young Hatchell loose and the Cards came back and shocked the TN. boys. From that moment on the Cards offense has never been the same. I will greatly miss Coach Dew, a good friend, but feel this was a obvious choice with Coach Dew's departure. Coach Hatchell has routinely been one of the most innovative offensive minds I have been around at the high school level and the stats speak volumes to this.
