Not enough healthy players is what I have been told.

These are the games that the younger players get to see more than just one offensive/defensive series.

I would like to say that the administration and coaching staff at Crittenden County were amazing hosts for Red Helmet Sports. We are privileged to meet some fine people that we have in place at our Kentucky High Schools.

Mayfield returns to War Memorial to play the Rebels of Todd County Central this week in a 2A First District game. I really don't have much that can say as this looks to be an even bigger mismatch than last week's game at Crittenden County. In that game, Mayfield had a running clock in the second quarter. So far, the Rebels have lost big this year even losing to Ballard Memorial who had not had a victory in two years. This game has running clock written all over it, but tell us what you think.

Mayfield stays on the road again this week as they travel to Crittenden County to play the Rockets in a District One opener for both teams. The Rockets come into this one with a 1-3 record while the Cardinals are 3-1. This looks to be a victory for Mayfield on paper, but, as you well know, they do not play these games on paper. Does Crittenden County get their First District schedule started with a victory over Mayfield? Tell us what you think.

Mayfield's 1978 team can definitely make an argument as genuine small school that is a public school as well. Big Red defeated a nationally ranked power in East St. Louis, and also a football power from Memphis that year. They went undefeated and were ranked as the number one team in the state...all classes.

Mayfield hits the road to play the only 6A school left in the Jackson Purchase, and that being the McCracken County Mustangs. The Cardinals are still smarting from last week's loss to Paducah Tilghman, and McCracken enters this game fresh off a victory over Clarksville Northeast. Both schools have played and lost to Tilghman which is the only loss on the season for both teams. Both schools have an offense that can score, and a defense that has struggled at times. So the question is this, who can improve enough on defense to stop, or slow down, the other team's offense? Who can make the fewest mistakes?

Big blue is really good on BOTH sides of the ball. It stood out to me that their pass coverage by their secondary was very well executed. There were no breakdowns for Mayfield to take advantage of. James ran the ball like a good running back is supposed to. The Cardinal defenders chased him all night long. Sherrill had some good runs as well. Also, #3 (his name escapes me, but only because I'm trying to forget it 🙂) had some great catches. He caught everything thrown in his direction. Overall, a great effort from PT against their arch rival, who shall remain nameless. Good job Blue Tornado!

I was a freshman at Mayfield, and I was one of the guys who helped run the football from Paducah to Mayfield (26 miles), and we met the bicycle riders on a straight stretch of road on old 45. They made a huge circle in the road blocking both lanes, and we threw the football around to each other for awhile while shouting beat Tilghman. It seems quite foolish today, but as a young kid caught up in the rivalry, it was a blast! Yes, we beat the big blue that year, GBR!

I love my Cardinals, and we have the potential to be really good, but top 25 in the state right now? I think that is too high at this time.
