Week three of first district play in class 2A will most certainly decide who will win the district title as 6-0 Caldwell County travels to play the Cardinals at War Memorial. Both of these teams are 2-0 in district play with the Tigers crushing Trigg County and Fort Campbell, and Mayfield beating Crittenden County and Todd County Central. The big discrepancy that stands out concerning these two teams is their non-district schedule. Caldwell has had its way with noticeably weaker opponents, and Mayfield has taken on teams that have put every player to the test. Does this mean the Cardinals are the favorite? I would like to say that the administration and coaching staff at Crittenden County were amazing hosts for Red Helmet Sports. We are privileged to meet some fine people that we have in place at our Kentucky High Schools.

Mayfield returns to War Memorial to play the Rebels of Todd County Central this week in a 2A First District game. I really don't have much that can say as this looks to be an even bigger mismatch than last week's game at Crittenden County. In that game, Mayfield had a running clock in the second quarter. So far, the Rebels have lost big this year even losing to Ballard Memorial who had not had a victory in two years. This game has running clock written all over it, but tell us what you think.

Mayfield stays on the road again this week as they travel to Crittenden County to play the Rockets in a District One opener for both teams. The Rockets come into this one with a 1-3 record while the Cardinals are 3-1. This looks to be a victory for Mayfield on paper, but, as you well know, they do not play these games on paper. Does Crittenden County get their First District schedule started with a victory over Mayfield? Tell us what you think.

Mayfield's 1978 team can definitely make an argument as genuine small school that is a public school as well. Big Red defeated a nationally ranked power in East St. Louis, and also a football power from Memphis that year. They went undefeated and were ranked as the number one team in the state...all classes.

Mayfield hits the road to play the only 6A school left in the Jackson Purchase, and that being the McCracken County Mustangs. The Cardinals are still smarting from last week's loss to Paducah Tilghman, and McCracken enters this game fresh off a victory over Clarksville Northeast. Both schools have played and lost to Tilghman which is the only loss on the season for both teams. Both schools have an offense that can score, and a defense that has struggled at times. So the question is this, who can improve enough on defense to stop, or slow down, the other team's offense? Who can make the fewest mistakes?

Big blue is really good on BOTH sides of the ball. It stood out to me that their pass coverage by their secondary was very well executed. There were no breakdowns for Mayfield to take advantage of. James ran the ball like a good running back is supposed to. The Cardinal defenders chased him all night long. Sherrill had some good runs as well. Also, #3 (his name escapes me, but only because I'm trying to forget it 🙂) had some great catches. He caught everything thrown in his direction. Overall, a great effort from PT against their arch rival, who shall remain nameless. Good job Blue Tornado!

I was a freshman at Mayfield, and I was one of the guys who helped run the football from Paducah to Mayfield (26 miles), and we met the bicycle riders on a straight stretch of road on old 45. They made a huge circle in the road blocking both lanes, and we threw the football around to each other for awhile while shouting beat Tilghman. It seems quite foolish today, but as a young kid caught up in the rivalry, it was a blast! Yes, we beat the big blue that year, GBR!

Early season polls can be….interesting. :)

I love my Cardinals, and we have the potential to be really good, but top 25 in the state right now? I think that is too high at this time.

The Christian County TIGERS make their first visit to War Memorial Stadium in their first road game of the new season. The Tigers are 0-1 after a loss to Cooper last week, but it was a close game all of the way with the Colonels, oops I mean Tigers, losing by seven. Mayfield enters this game at 1-0 after getting a hard fought victory over cross town rival Graves County 31-15. It is hard to draw too many conclusions from that game as the officials weighed in on almost every play making the teams look like they were playing in quicksand. I am not sure what kind of passing game the Tigers have, but the Cardinals struggled with adequate coverage on the deep routes for sure. Can the Tigers come in and notch their first victory ever, and do it at War Memorial? Tell us what you think.

Wow, what a weird game. Great win for Mayfield last night. Graves County fully expected to win that game, and the two long drives that they scored on (one was a field goal) showed that they have some firepower. The Cardinals defense kept their qb on the run most of the night. We are going to have to improve in the secondary for sure as dropped passes and some inerrant throws bailed out our defensive backs who were beaten on the play. Neither team could get any kind of flow going for all of the penalty flags that were being thrown. A total of 257 yards in penalties by both teams is excessive. Robbins will be ok for next week’s game, and as far as I know, there are no other injuries to report. GBR!

It is time for the 2026 edition of the Battle of the Birds to be played at Graves County High School this year. Excitement for the new season to start is always high around here, but Cardinal fans are watching this game with special interest. Beginning with Coach Leahy taking over from Jack Morris, each coach that have taken the helm as the Cardinals head coach has LOST the Graves Co game in their first meeting. Coach Leahy lost, Coach Joe Morris Lost, Coach Dew lost, and now comes the first meeting against the Eagles for new head coach Stephen Hatchell. Will he break this insane losing streak? As for the teams, Mayfield showed us something in the Owensboro scrimmage. The Eagles had better come ready to play. We really haven’t heard much from the Eagles camp so far. and it could be that they are keeping things “close to the vest” if you will. Rivalry games have all kinds of crazy things happen, and I do not expect that this year will be any different. What do you think?

Owensboro will be really tough out in 5A again this year. We were impressed with the defense at every position. As for Mayfield, there are plenty of things to improve upon, but there is alot to be excited about.

There are alot of questions surrounding the Mayfield Cardinals as they will host the Owensboro Red Devils in a preseason scrimmage this Friday. How will the team respond to its newest head coach? Can the Cardinals maintain a level of excellence that they are known for? These are just a couple of the many questions being asked right now. The word I have received (and it is very reliable) is that while many are talking, the 2026 Cardinals have gone to work. This team may surprise some folks (if that is possible) given the situation. Robbins is back at QB with a LOADED backfield. Mayfield just may run more than they have recently because of the talent they have running the ball. All of this is dependent on everyone staying healthy, We will find out some things as the powerhouse Red Devils will come to play some powerhouse football. Can the Cardinals hang with them?
