Best player from Burgin High School was 6'8" Jack Coleman who led Burgin to its only State Tournament spot in 1938. Later played at the University of Louisville where today his jersey is retired and then for the Rochester Royals and St. Louis Hawks. He won 2 NBA Championship rings. One with Rochester and another toward the end of his career with St. Louis beating the Boston Celtics in 7 games. That Celtics team had Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Tom Heinson, and Bill Sharman. In the 6th game in Boston Garden he hit the shot at the end of regulation to send it into overtime where St. Louis won and forced a 7th game back in St. Louis. He was the 6th man on that team while starting for Rochester. Just a little history from some 70 years ago. Today Burgin is still a school with about 350 students in grades K-12. My graduating class was 26 back in the 70s and today that is about the size of a graduating class.

Blue and Gold...Crigler played for Hebron HS. His senior year the YMCA had a long shot contest (today it would be called a 3 point shooting contest). A bunch of us went and were arguing about who would win. No one mentioned Crigler. After all he was a center and everyone knew big men could not shoot from outside. No one told John and he absolutely smoked the competition. A few years ago I ran into Crigler leaving Freedom Hall on the way to the lot. I asked him about the game when Hebron beat a very good Holmes team. Holmes was freezing the ball a 1 point lead and seconds to go when the scorekeeper added 2 points for Hebron. Holmes took a hurried shot and missed and the police escorted the scorekeeper out of the gym. John remembered it well and added that his team was trying to figure out who to foul when he looked up and saw they were in the lead.

The scorekeeper had Newport affiliations and ever after Coach Ellis always referred to him as that *&@XX**_____. It was not a nice term, but he was always consistent.

For those who mentioned players like Farmer and others above Unseld....you need a hisory lesson and a look at basketball history. Unseld played on a team that would have smoked any other team in Ky history with the exception of the Great Ashland team of around 1961. He was the NBA MVP when Baltimore won it all.

For those who mentioned some of the St. Henry players. I wish you had gotten to see Bucky Steffen. The match-ups between Tieman and Steffen were incredible as were the matches between Thacker and Barton.

From tiny Silver Grove..."the Rocket" Rod Remley...and from that samw era (70's) were a couple of tough players D. Ficke and D. Farwick (Dan And Dave, I believe). But I don't remember if they were Brossart or S. Grove...also a kid named Hedges (Mike?)

...welcome 'Lung, a big "shout out" to you!

Talk about going back a ways, how about Buddy Goodwin from Silver Grove?

Blake is not of the same level as Nick or Phil, he had no college offers and both of these players were stars at the next level. I really like Blake but he is not in the top ten best players to play at Cawood. My top ten would be Sanford, Cox, Coldiron, L Rhymer, D Hensley, H Jordan, D Parks, M Howard, E Eads, H Turner.

Blake scored around 2,700 points. There is now way he is outside of the top ten.

I'm not old enough to post a top ten of my opinion, but here is what I have gathered from everyone else.

Ahead of everyone:

Nick Sanford

Phil Cox

Next tier:

Blake Hubbs

Lynn Rhymer

Dave Parks

Boots Smallwood

Next tier:

Paul Hearld

Garry Henson

Everly Eads

David Hensley

Greg Coldiron

I'm sure I've left some out, but this seems to be a popular view.
