It's the same principal as not doing something to distract a free throw shooter which is also against the rules. If a kids batting an opposing player shouldn't distract him with "swing batter batter" it's classless plain and simple. In my old man's day, and my Grandpa's day it didn't even happen. When I was a kid it was VERY rare that a team would say anything to you. Now it's very common and as an umpire it's very annoying, as a future coach and parent (not any time soon), I'll would NEVER allow my team to talk trash or try to distract the other team, unless it's with loud cheering for their team.

My knothole team would have been kicked out of the league long before we won three City Titles...

Same here, but we only had one title and a runner-up to Midland's minor league team. However, we never directed anything at other teams. It was more of our pregame chant and dance. :D

There are a lot of classless things you can say and do in a game nowadays, as I found out talking to Stickymitts, I can see why it's not allowed now and understand it. But "swing batter batter" isn't classless and I have a hard time believing that it didn't happen in your dad's era, he probably isn't that far off in age from me and it was a big part of the game back in the seventies. It seemed every team you played did that, right down to the catcher. It never bothered me and I don't recall it ever causing a problem. It's too bad things have gotten to the point they are now.

How is trash talking to distract the other team not classless?

 Did you guys dance around a rubber Yoda hand puppet? Gotta love Jason Bailey.

We danced around that puppet and then Bailey would climb the dugout fence to hang it at the highest point. But that was only after we circled the plate and sang Alive by Pearl Jam as a team before we took infield...

Our chant was a little more offensive, but no-one outside of us really knew what we were saying, or what it really meant. I remember our first game up at city, the team we were playing was laughing and making fun of us. We 10 run ruled them in 5. Our next game, it seemed like everyone at the complex came over to watch us do our chant and take infield.

At my sons AAU game this past weekend somes fans on the other team had air horns and some other type of party item that made noise. When our kids came up to bat..or one of our pitchers were getting ready to pitch they would blow the horn or sound off the stupid party gizmo. That is TOTAL BUSH!!!

Back in the '70s, my (future) wife and I would go to just about every Morehead home game. There was an old guy who would sit right behind home plate, and with the first pitch thrown by the opposing pitcher that wasn't a strike, he'd holler "WILD BILL".

That's just about all he said, just "WILD BILL" over and over and over.

Wonder if he'd be escorted out of knothole games?
