March 30, 200719 yr If mom and dad can do it from the stands, why can the players not do it? Or are you saying that it is okay for 8-9-10 year olds to yell and argue with the umps. Kids DO NOT get the it is okay for an adult to do it but not okay for a kid to do it point. They see if mom and dad can do it, it is okay for me to do it. You make a good point here but as from my experience in coaching youth baseball I know that I had a rock solid rule on the kids arguing/yelling at an ump. I didn't care what the parents in the stands did. Well, I did but I couldn't control that. I could go on and on about youth baseball and I am sure that there are others on BGP that are more knowledgeable than me on it but I have love for it and have seen it from practically all angles......Played ball in my youth, coached youth sports, umpired/officiated youth sports and just at the games as a fan of youth sports. One thing that I have found is that "all the kids want to do is play ball" and....."All the parents want to do is complain and gripe (for lack of a better word not allowed on bgp:sssh: ) about it. This is not always the case, I must say in my years as a coach I had for the most part some very good and supportive parents that set great examples for their kids and made my part in it (coaching) a lot easier.
March 30, 200719 yr Chatter is a big part of the game. I think it helps keep the kids focused on the game and keeps them occupied. It's format changes as the kids get older. As long as it does not become something that is abusive I am ok with it.There is a big difference in normal baseball chatter than just an unruly parent or player running their mouth to cause trouble, the latter of which should never be tolerated by the umpire or league that is running the event.

March 31, 200719 yr My only problem with this rule is it's going to turn into no chatter at all. Some umps are going to abuse this rule. I helped coach an 'A' ball team in Indian Hill a few years back. The field ump told my boys to keep their mouths' shut. They did not, and he came over to me and told me if they didn't stop talking, I would be thrown out of the game followed by my players. They were yelling nothing derogatory or offensive, and they weren't even directing it towards the other team. They were cheering on their own player at the plate. I argued with the ump for a few minutes and even tried to pull in the plate ump, but he wanted nothing to do with it. He said the boys weren't allowed to say anything. I even had the coach from the other team backing up my argument. I fear that with this new rule, we're going to see more of this, and it takes away from the game.

Now the "batter, batter, batter, batter" fromt he infileders is so loud and common not many do it. I have no problem with coaches talking to me, but kids should root for their teammates and say nothing else.

April 1, 200719 yr We didn't yell much in high school. If a pitcher was tiring down and allowing back to back runs or something we'd just yell "He's shook" but that's about as far as we took it!
