doomer
I was reading some info. this weekend about some of the incredible wife of some of the popular televangelists: 6 Outrageously Wealthy Preachers Under Federal Investigation It is interesting to me as to how other people feel about this topic. I see these people as the greediest of the corporate execs. Maybe they are more like actors or media personalities. I'll stop there, but this topic leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Science Friction
You know how I feel. Preachers Politicians Lawyers Used Car Salesmen Jared Fogle Ebola Megan Kelly ISIS ... A pretty solid list of SICKENING and/or DISGUSTING right there. Preachers get the nod, though. Megan, worse than an ebola outbreak but only slightly less painful to watch than an ISIS beheading party.
oldgrappler
Is that all preachers or just televangelists? Have you had that bad of experiences with preachers? I gotta tell you, the ones I knew growing up were very kind, compassionate, and upright gentlemen. Definitely weren't in it for the money. They were paid made very little. I know very few preachers who are in it for the money. But the televangelist guys always came across as super sleazy (even if they aren't) and seemed like money and the prosperity gospel is all they talked about. doomer
As far as preachers I have known, more were in it for their faith than the couple I knew who may have been in it for faith, but were awfully concerned about their financial well-being as well. Science Friction
Televangelists would top the list of sleaze. Unfortunately, I have seen a lot of bad behavior from small town preachers. Adultery, pornography, embezzlement, child predation, substance abuse. One church in my town fired a preacher for an extramarital affair. The new hire was there less than three years when he impregnated a married woman in the church, paid for her abortion, and then tried to cover it up. Tough few months for that congregation. Oh, and the preacher prior to those two was fired for causing problems within the church. Tough stretch of luck for that congregation. Must have not been praying hard enough. A preacher in another church in town was run off a couple years ago for watching porn from the computer in his pastoral office. So it's not just televangelists. As Trump would say, some of them are probably good people. I guess you just expect most preachers to be fine, upstanding people. Just not true, though, it seems. The TV preacher guys(and gals) just ooze with impropriety. Spirituality can be a good thing but religion is a lot more bad than good from what I've observed. Bert
Seems like the numbers and prominence of Televangelists have dropped off considerably. I always assumed it was Jimmy Swaggart and James Baker that sort of did that. Not too many like Fulton Sheen anymore.

However, just like any segment of the population...teachers, police officers, dentists...they have their bad apples, and some can be really bad. It's just so shocking when you hear about it because most people just don't expect it. To be honest though, it has happened enough times in the recent past that...though we should still be shocked by it, we shouldn't be surprised. I know what our pastor makes (as should anyone at their respective church), and I have to be honest...no way in the world does he make enough money with all that he is involved with. Weddings, funerals, hospital visits, counseling, teaching, preaching, camps, outreach...the list is almost never ending. I have my basketball ministry that I am involved with, but to be blunt, I'm glad the Lord didn't call me to be a full time minister. Takes a really special person to do it, and do it well. Jumper_Dad
I've known personally one man that was out for the money it seemed. I never attended his services but saw the path he chose. Took advantage of businesses and the community under the pretense of serving the Lord to seemingly line his own pockets. Constantly black mailing businesses for donations for events that he put on every few weeks...would tell them (the businesses) that if they didn't give he'd tell the people attending the event that they refused to support the event and that they (the attendees) should remember that when making decisions on where to spend their money. This guy even sold a church out from under a congregation then took the money (as the deed was in his name and not the churches) and left town. He no longer preaches as far as I know, he's now a car salesman.
