Thanks for looking into this. I've exchanged emails in the past with the Enquirer's asleep-at-the-wheel sports editors over reduced coverage of post-season high school tournaments, but I never thought that I'd see no coverage, if only for one day, of a major new sports event taking place just 10 miles or so from the Enquirer's office. In a nutshell, this is why I joined BGP a couple years back.

In Friday's Enquirer, there was zilch on the Girls Sweet 16. No roundup of yesterday's games. No advance stories on NKY teams Campbell-Holmes vs. Franklin-Mercer. Not a line of agate on times for the four games today. Absolutely pathetic.

Holmes lost the game in the first half. You knew Bulldogs were going to make a run late like they did against Ryle, but being down 15 or whatever the largest deficit was in the third quarter was just too much to overcome against a quality foe like Mercer County.

Thanks to Lawnboy13 for his updates. I liked his drama on the final shot at the buzzer ... leaving us hanging for a few seconds. Did Ryle run out of gas late? Was the bigger floor a factor?

Believe Conner only had two first-half field goals. Holmes was very efficient offensively in the halfcourt game.

Holy Cross announcers tonight mentioned the good sportsmanship displayed both last year and this year by both teams after the district championship games were decided. Like to hear that.

When doc put family member on a fairly expensive Rx a few years back, we started getting calls and letters from the wellness folks -- "Hi, this is Nancy, your personal nurse." Of course, the intent of these calls and letters was simply to get said family member off of the pricy Rx, so insurance company could make more money.

Disagree. Holmes and Ryle combined are 20-1 in the region, with Ryle's only region loss coming at Holmes by 4 points. I would be real surprised if the region winner isn't one of these two teams.

Overuse of "rising" jumped out at me, too. All programs and athletes are "on the rise" during the off-season. Speaking of cliches, let's add "will be just fine" to the irritation list. That one is my pet peeve. Nobody knows if the team "will be just fine" until the lads "strap on the war bonnets."

I hate when these ACT lists pop up. "Gee, my little Johnny goes to the 'best' school in the 9th District." Fact is, the two most academically challenging programs in the area are probably Cov Latin and the IB program at Holmes.

Highlands only scored 15 after halftime. Similar to how Holmes beat Ryle -- second-half defense.

Holmes down 8 with 1 minute remaining in 2nd quarter. Bulldogs then reeled off 6 points lickety split to gain much needed momentum before half. Ryle did real nice job of limiting Bulldogs to one shot and denying offensive rebounds. Ryle's height definitely was a factor. But Bulldogs' defensive pressure was a bigger factor, especially in second half.

Ryle led by 2 at half, 21-19. By the time Raiders got their second wind in second half, it was too late. Ryle only hit three field goals from halftime until 3 minutes to go in game. Late free throws by Ryle made this a closer score at end. Holmes didn't shoot the ball well either.

Is game still on tonight at Holmes? Covington schools were closed today because of bomb threat made in social media.

Seriously, folks, the fact that Highlands made the state semifinals without beating a team with a winning record all year underscores how weak some of these six Kentucky football classes are.

Score was 31-31 at half. Bulldogs turned it up a notch on D in third quarter, and BB struggled to find the offensive rhythm that it had in first half. Missed free throws also hurt BB.

My question is whether the punting team loses the opportunity to close out the play (1) after the ball strikes member of receiving team and (2) after it then goes into end zone. Rules say that the punting team may recover the ball after it hits a member of the receiving team. Correct?

Surely there's some mention in rule book of punted ball becoming live after it hits player on receiving team. I'm just curious as to what the language specifically says.

Correct. Saw that post. I'm also trying to determine what the rules specifically say re: punt recovered by kicking team. If the rule simply says that whichever team recovers ball gains possession after ball is touched by receiving team, then we appear to have competing rules.

You might well be right. Having said that, I'm wondering whether we might have dueling rules here. In other words, if there's a rule that specifies that a punt becomes a live ball if it touches but is not possessed by a member of the receiving team -- and that whichever team thereafter recovers said live ball takes possession -- then perhaps that takes precedence over the goalline-touchback rule. Been looking for the complete KHSAA football rulebook online, but can't find it. If anyone has a link, that would help. Thanks.

This is the first time I've ever heard of a "saved by the (bell) goalline" rule at any level of football. There has to be a negative consequence for touching but not recovering a live ball within the field of play.

Sounds like TD was correct call. If this had happened on 20 yard line, then NewCath would have had to recover ball to retain possession after touching ball.

Difference in the game was turnovers. St. Henry had too many. Big momentum changer was monster block in 4th quarter that led to Bulldog layup. Don't know who had the block but it was highlight-video quality. Nice to see a bunch of Holmes students front and center, with face paint, etc., cheering the team on. Been a while since I've witnessed this.

Colonels win 60-40. It'll be closer in March.

Holmes scored on first two possessions, went up 27-0 at half. Both running game and passing game clicked for Bulldogs tonight. Running clock late in third quarter.
