A question for Highlands fans about Highlands Playing up to 5A

Featured Replies

If, by chance, BGreen continues to dominate 5a and over the next 3 years, Highlands goes 0-3 in titles won, will they continue to request playing up or will they opt to go back to 4A, the class they actually qualify for, enrollment wise?

With the Cov Catholic rivalry not really being what it used to be, is it that important that they stay in the same class as CC is in?

I may be mistaken but I believe Highlands has a history of "playing up" a class.

This will not set well with 4A fans but if Highlands did play in 4A they would meet South Warren 9 out of 10 years. I really don't see any competition for South Warren in 4A.

South Warren fans may not like this but if your biggest competition in regular season is Franklin and/or Greenwood that is not considered a stellar schedule. Their playoff run will only be faced with little friction from possibly Hop town.

If you ever wanted to be in a class, I think 4A is it the next few years.

Before the fans jump on this post, tell me I am wrong. Franklin, Greenwood??

I was told recently by someone very close to the program, that the only thing that matters is being tied or ahead of Trinity in the number of state titles. If this 4 year stretch of 5A doesn't pan out as they originally expected, I think Highlands will be back in 4A on the next realignment. Especially if Trinity gets a title or two during that span and starts to pull away.

IMO going back to 4A would be a horrible statement to make...if Highlands were to do that it would mean that they no longer think they are elite statewide and will be happy just to drop down to collect state titles. I hope they stay at 5A and slug it out with BG and others for years to come, that is the best thing for football in Kentucky...

I fully expect S.Warren to improve it's scheduling.. It may have been weak this year, but, they still didn't have any trouble running thru the playoffs. People always criticize a weak schedule when that team gets knocked out in the playoffs. Well, it's hard to criticize when they win every playoff game, going away.. Doesn't that take a little bit of the weak schedule theory to bed?

I dont think they will do this, it will stick out like a sore thumb. I think they will have a hard time winning a title over the next couple years in 5A but they have some strong talent coming up.

Until Cov Cath improves Highlands will continue deep playoff runs. With that said I believe there is going to a long state title drought for the birds. Its to bad Cooper made the jump to 6a early.

I agree Highlands will be in the Semi State (at the very least) for years and years to come...that region has HHS and CovCath and that's pretty much it. And honestly there won't be many years that Region 4 Champion can challenge them...so State Finals is almost assured for years to come in 5A

What talent does highlands have coming back next year? Do they have any younger players going to make an impact next year?

Honestly, IMO, N.Laurel & Pulaski were better than Highlands and Southwestern could have played with them this year.. They were way off from the team they've been the last 6-7 years.. Maybe this was just one of those fluke years and they did, at least make the semi finals, so, I guess if that's the worst you do, it may not be that bad, but, it sure looked like they took a big nose dive in talent and execution this year..

SW had central Hardin and JP2 and don't get to far a head of yourself on greenwood Seabolt has them going in the right direction (they played you tough for half +) but SW in two years will add better competition when new contracts come available .but in next reinlignment SWwill be 5a .but for next 3 years your right SW should have a good shot of state finals every year .

I would think it would depend on CCH and local district opponents. I believe the only local 4A school is Scott? If so I expect HHS will continue to play up where they at least have a complete district locally.

I'm not in the know but everything I've ever heard from those close to the program is that this year and next would be lean, then improve after that.

The freshman team at Highlands was pretty strong this year and the word is that the incoming Freshman will be even better. Because of this, I would guess that we will see the Birds very much in the 5a mix in a couple years. Maybe not next year, but in 2017, they will be competitive.
