If the Semifinals Were at Neutral Sites...

Did a little work this morning investigating what neutral sites could be used for the state semifinals if that was the way the KHSAA did it. A couple of rules:

1. Stadiums must have turf surfaces.

2. No stadium can be used for more than one game, assuring all games on Friday night.

3. Stadiums must be roughly central between the two schools. I used this link (Whatshalfway.com - Find great places to meet or stop halfway) to best determine the midpoints, although obviously there had to be some maneuvering to find the closest field and to not use it multiple times.

4. Shown beside each school name is the expected time of travel from school to field using Google Maps.

5. Obviously there would have to be some type of agreement between the KHSAA and it's schools as well as the colleges/universities in Kentucky to host these games. I'm projecting these sites on the assumption that agreement had been made.

6. I used Lindsey Wilson for this season although they could host an NAIA playoff game and would be unavailable. I had to take some liberties.

Class 1A

Campbellsville (1:23) vs. Beechwood (1:16) - Paul Dunbar High School, Lexington

Raceland (1:18) vs. Pikeville (0:57) - Sheldon Clark High School, Inez

Class 2A

Mayfield (1:33) vs. CAL (2:04) - Muhlenberg County High School, Greenville

Glasgow (0:35) vs. Danville (1:13) - Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia

Class 3A

Elizabethtown (0:50) vs. Boyle County (0:57) - Campbellsville University, Campbellsville

Central (1:12) vs. Corbin (1:18) - Frederick Douglass High School, Lexington

Class 4A

Franklin-Simpson (1:25) vs. Collins (1:01) - Elizabethtown High School, Elizabethtown

Wayne County (2:07) vs. Johnson Central (1:05) - Perry County Central High School, Hazard

Class 5A

South Warren (1:48) vs. Covington Catholic (1:29) - St. Xavier High School, Louisville

Madison Southern (1:06) vs. Harlan County (1:29) - University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg

Class 6A

These were the only two with really wide travel gaps that benefited one school over the other.

Glasgow/Danville is slanted because other fields in the area had to be used for other games. Wayne County/Johnson Central is slanted because there aren't many turf options between the two schools.

What is in it for the host school? Why host the games?

That's the rub. There's likely no way the KHSAA could convince these schools to play host, provide workers, etc., especially on Thanksgiving weekend. You'd have to offer some type of incentive (portion of gate receipts, concessions) to make it work. And that's why this is a fantasy post instead of reality! :lol2:

good idea in theory, a few issues. 1. Now both teams are traveling along with fan bases will equal more expenses. 2. The crowd will suffer, granted with a long drive one school may not bring many people but would cutting that drive in half bring enough people to make up the difference. 3. You would have to pay to use most facilities costing more money. I say stay as is and you hope you host the game the next year.

Someone would lose money.

Currently teams split the gate after expenses and only 1 team has to pay for travel.

In this scenario both teams have to pay travel costs.

There will be costs associated with using a neutral field, you can't expect the host to just donate their field.

Will a gate at a neutral field even cover expenses, especially if the teams have to pay to rent the facility?

So both teams pay travel costs, they don't necessarily split gate and crown will be smaller. Not a fan of the idea.
