article 10th Region Rankings & Weekly Review (1-17-16)

Inclement weather negatively influenced a handful of games last week, but the Class "A" Tournament was able to be played, and the outcome caused a slight shift in our rankings.

#1 - Montgomery County (13-6)

Matt Daniel's Indians maintain the top spot after a 1-1 finish last week. Montgomery outscored George Rogers Clark 21-10 in the 4th quarter to pull away for a 64-52 Friday night home win. Art Walker led 4 Indians in double figures with 22 points. Jerryd Jones had 12, while Caswell Fuller and Brennan Canada both notched 11. On Saturday Montgomery participated in Southwestern's Hall Of Fame Classic, losing 68-59 to Pulaski County.

#2 - Bishop Brossart (14-3)

The Mustangs added a pair of W's last week to extend their winning streak to 8 games, and in the process, claim the 10th Region Class A championship. Brossart manhandled Nicholas County in Thursday night's semifinals by a score of 55-28, led by Jackson Crawford's 14 points and Bryce Kremer's 12. Crawford went for 23 points in Saturdays title game, as the Stangs held off a furious, late Paris rally to win 54-50. Crawford was named to the All-Tournament team, joined by teammates Jacob Zai and Logan Schultz. Mike Code's squad advances to the Class "A" State Tournament, where it will play the 1st Region winner on Thursday night, January 28th at 8:00 pm in the Frankfort Civic Center.

#3 - Paris (13-3)

In three tough Class "A" Tournament battles, the Greyhounds finished 2-1. In Monday's quarterfinals, the Hounds trailed Bracken County 30-25 at halftime, but dominated the Polar Bears 44-25 in the 2nd half to win 69-55. Koebe Garrard led with 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Marcus Ashford added 19 points on 12-15 FT's. The Hounds led Augusta from tip to final horn in Wednesday's semifinals, defeating the defending Class "A" champs 68-63. Garrard again paced the winners with 23 points. Jekobi Wells contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds. Saturday's championship game was a long night for the Hounds, who trailed the vast majority of the game. Terence Brooks' club did make a late charge and had a chance to tie or take the lead in the game's final 13 seconds, but Bishop Brossart proved too strong, winning 54-50. Wells and James Clark both scored 14 points to lead Paris in defeat.

#4 - Campbell County (8-11)

Matt Wilson scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Camels won at Highlands on Tuesday night 56-52. The senior big man went for 18 and 18 on Friday night in a rare home game--an 83-70 victory over Conner. Junior wing Garren Bertsch was Campbell's top scorer in the game with 25 points, including 4-5 3pt field goal shooting. Three other Camels earned double figures in the contest: Cole Hegyi had 12 and both Tanner Clos and Trent McGovney pitched in with 11. Aric Russell's team ended the week with a loss, falling 84-67 to Lafayette in Frankfort's DMD Classic. Bertsch topped all Camels with 22 points. Wilson had another strong performance with 18 points and 13 rebounds. McGovney tossed in 14.

#5 - Mason County (12-6)

Buddy Biggs led the Royals against his old team, the Ashland Tomcats in Maysville on Friday night. Biggs' club had no problems whatsoever, dominating the Tomcats in a 60-42 defeat. Isiah Garrison led the team with 17 points, Pig Williams added 16, and Conner Sweeney earned 11 points and 11 boards. On Saturday the Royals were upended 78-74 at Lexington Catholic, with Sweeney's 18 points and 11 rebounds leading in the loss. Pig Williams also had 18 and Garrison 16.

#6 - George Rogers Clark (9-8)

GRC started last week with a Tuesday night 74-71 win over visiting Harrison County. The Cards trailed by as many as 11 points in the 4th quarter, but stormed back to get the W. James Cornelius and Ryan Cooper both tallied 16 points in the win. Jyles Anderson totaled 11 points and Jordan Menchen 10. In Friday night's road contest at rival Montgomery County, GRC was behind 43-42 after 3 quarters, but the hosts dominated the 4th quarter to win 64-52. Cornelius led with 14 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort. Then Scott Humphrey's team finished the week with a nice 70-65 triumph over visiting 9th Region foe Dixie Heights. Cornelius paced the victors with 20, while Anderson, Menchen, and Josiah Israel each scored 12.

#7 - Scott (6-11)

In just one contest last week, the Eagles managed just 29 points in a 58-29 pounding at the hands of Dixie Heights at Northern Kentucky University. Jake Ohmer scored 13 for Brad Carr's club, who has now lost 5 of its last 6.

#8 - Augusta (11-5)

Two game and two losses for Brian Kirk's squad last week, starting with a 68-63 loss to Paris in the Class "A" semifinals. Connor Maddox topped the Panthers with 23 points in defeat. On Saturday the Panthers lost at the buzzer on the road at Bourbon County 56-55. Maddox's 18 points led in the loss, while Jared Shoemaker added 14 and Camryn Snapp 12.

#9 - Bracken County (8-6)

The Polar Bears also had but one game last week, a 69-55 loss to Paris in the 10th Region Class "A" Quarterfinals. Bracken led by 5 at the half, but Jason Hinson's bunch got outscored 44-25 in the 2nd half. Austin Crawford led the Bears with 32 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

#10 - Harrison County (9-8)

The Thorobreds sqandered a double-digit lead in Tuesday night's 74-71 loss at George Rogers Clark, allowing the home team to score 28 4th quarter points. Zack Pulliam led Harrison in defeat with 19 points. Spencer Free and Brock Jenkins both chipped in with 12. On Friday night Larry Kendall's team entertained and outlasted Bourbon County 48-46. Reese Asher scored 13 to lead the Breds and Pulliam added 11.

#11 - Pendleton County (8-11)

Freshman Dontaie Allen erupted for 30 points and 18 rebounds in Wednesday night's 68-41 road win against Fleming County. Allen drained 12-20 FG's and 4-4 treys in the contest. Friday was a completely different outcome, however, as visiting Grant County bested the Wildcats 53-39. Keaton Belcher's club shot just 22.9% from the floor, as well as 5-25 (20%) from the 3-point line. Hunter Wood was the only PC player in double figures with 12 points.

#12 - Bourbon County (3-16)

The Colonels dropped two games to start last week, beginning with a 79-47 Tuesday night home loss to undefeated Mercer County. Billy Orcutt scored 14 points to top the team in defeat. Bourbon then lost 48-46 at Harrison County on Friday night, with Orcutt and Titus Ransom both scoring 13. Nick Sosby's boys ended the week on a high note, though, with a 56-55 victory over visiting Augusta. The Colonels won the game on Ransom's coast-to-coast buzzer-beating floater. The sophomore Ransom scored 16 for Bourbon, but Ameryon Blackburn led the team with 18.

#13 - Nicholas County (6-12)

The Jackets were dealt a pair of losses last week, starting with Monday night's 69-65 defeat vs. Model. Spencer Morris scored 19 and Elijah Barnett 16 in the loss. In Thursday night's Class "A" semifinals, Nicholas managed just 21.9% FG shooting in a 55-28 loss to Bishop Brossart. Trent Letcher's 10 points led Matthew Botner's club.

#14 - St. Patrick (8-11)

The Saints went 1-1 last week, which began with a 64-39 loss at Boone County on Thursday night. Ben Swolsky was the only St. Pat player to reach double figures, finishing with 12 points. Matthew Taylor's bunch regrouped, however, for a Saturday night 60-41 home win over Burgin. Swolsky led again with 24 points, although Jakaar Frey had an impressive night of 12 points and 15 rebounds. Chase Burton pitched in with 11.

#15 - Calvary Christian (9-7)

A 4-game losing streak bumps the Cougars down a spot in the rankings. Two of those losses came last week, starting with Tuesday's hard-fought 52-48 home loss to Dayton, in which Aikeem Riley scored 22 points. Friday was a much more lopsided loss, as the Cougars dropped a 63-38 road road contest at Villa Madonna.

#16 - Robertson County (3-12)

The Black Devils had just one game last week, but snapped a 6-game losing streak in a 59-47 road victory at Brown. Mason Burden pumped in 28 points (15-18 FT's) to lead John Brown's club, and Dakota Moore tallied 11 points in the W.

#17 - Silver Grove (4-13)

Howard Brownstein's Silver Grove club started last week with a 68-37 loss at Villa Madonna on Wednesday, but the Big Trains scored a pair of weekend road wins--the team's first winning streak of the year. Silver Grove beat St. Francis 65-57 on Friday by putting four players in double figures. Randy Kuntz led the way with 24 points. Nathan Doyle had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Christian Kersey totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds. And finally, LoganTaylor contributed 10 points. On Saturday the Trains outlasted Walden 44-40, with Kuntz topping all scorers with 16 points.

I think I could make a strong case for brossart to be #1 over Moco. They beat #3 and #4 who both beat Moco. They also beat arguble the #1 9th region team (Holy Cross). Still appreciate these rankings!

Those of us close to the program felt that this team was much better than our pre-season Number 11 spot, but to be honest, we are even pleasantly surprised at what this team has over-achieved thus far.

While rankings mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, it is much appreciated recognition though for our kids, coaches, and overall program to have earned this mid-season distinction. Unless MoCo has an opening on their schedule over the next two weeks, I guess we will have to wait until the post-season for any possible showdown with the Indians.

Big man Jackson Crawford has been a reliable, consistent, productive force since Day One as many of us felt that he would be. Our only other returner with significant numbers from last year, Jacob Zai, has been consistently producing double-figure numbers on a nightly basis as well. The dependence on our point guard Logan Schultz has been well-rewarded, and the blue-collar efforts of Joey Hickman never cease to amaze us. This with the emergence of John Ridder, Justin Rolf, and Bryce Kremer as major players have contributed to the success of this team to date.

The Mustangs host Harrison County tonight in what for us could be the biggest trap game on our schedule, or could be business as usual by this group. Following this contest with the Breds, we lay off until Tuesday the 26th before packing up and heading to Frankfort for a date with the champions of Region 1, which could be a very good Murray team on the 28th in the Frankfort Convention Center.

Augusta Panthers had a great argument to move up this week after their battle with Paris in All A. Then they laid an egg in the feared "trap game" against Bourbon. Our Seniors need to bring their best effort every night, which they seem to do regularly against top teams. Unfortunately, we have shown that a 90% effort can turn ugly. Got a big chance on the road at Scott Tuesday. Might be a good game for some of you NKy BGPers to see our Panthers scrap.

Out of region losses to average or above average teams are NOT a bad thing to any team in the 10th region. This region is what it is.

This week is the first where I felt comfortable picking a top group. With that said, the next could arguably beat any of the top 5 in a one game setting.

It has been canceled as RP just mentioned. Paris going to the championship game will probably result in another game or two to be dropped to be post season eligable.

The fact that we are this far into the season and there is still 7-8 teams who could realistically compete for a regional title is great!! Going to be a fun postseason in the 10th this year

Interesting. Paris' total number of games would only equal 29. They're still eligible since the max number of games you can have is 30.

While getting the 1 seed is definitely an advantage over playing in the 2/3 game, it is by no means a free pass to the region. Not that anything crazy like that happened last year...

Whichever team gets the 1-seed, I'd imagine the coach of said team will be drilling that point home early and often.
