Why don't the just use Masset, Rhodes, and Cordero every night? Herrera was the right move there, it just didn't work out.

Bottomline is this team has 1 reliable arm in the pen, and he happens to be 40 and a situational lefty....They absolutely need to address the bullpen and do it soon. LeCure going out there will help, but that alone won't cut it. They have the pieces available if they want to make a move, but how much are they willing to give up?

Why do you guys keep missing the point on Herrera? Dusty used Herrera to face the right handers and then brought Rosario in after he failed. Why not Rosario to face the righties? Herrera was the wrong choice to lead off the inning against 2 righties, bottom line. Use anybody in the bullpen but Herrera to face righties starting off the inning.

Those 5 scoreless appearances only covered 2 2/3 innings. He was being used in a situational role in the previous 5 games, not to protect a one run lead to begin an inning. Why not Micah Owings in that spot? He hadn't pitched since June 4th and right-handers are hitting .127 against him.

No Dusty can't do that, Owings is his long relief guy and he will only use him as such no matter what. Dusty has blinders on when it comes to handling his pitchers. My whole point on these posts is about Dusty's ineptitude with handling the bullpen. He designated Owings as his long relief guy, Rhodes as his 7th inning guy, Massett as his 8th inn ing guy and Cordero as his closer. He won't waiver from that unless guys are absolutely not avaiable. I say use the best guy for the situation regardless of the inning once you get past the 6th inning. As a manager you should use the best tools you have to get the job done. The goal is to the win the game, period.

Sorry, but I can't put any stock into these posts when you've openly admitted you'll blame every loss on Dusty until he's fired...

Bottomline, Masset and Rhodes were not to be used last night unless worst case scenario. You can clamor that Herrera shouldn't have been the one to bring in all you want, but the guys in a major league bullpen, he should be able to retire both right and left handed hitters and a manager has to have confidence in them to do so. If Herrera gets the outs there, no one says a word. It wasn't like the hits were ropes either, two dinks that found open space.

And a little something to get EZLiving all fired up. :D

The Reds haven’t made the call, but I did. David Weathers would be willing to try to make a come back.

“That’s the one place I wanted to play,” he said. “Once I got traded and I knew they probably weren’t going to bring back, I thought that was it. That’s not a ploy. Cincinnati is the only place I wanted to play.”

Weathers hasn’t heard from the Reds, who have been struggling as a bullpen.

Weathers is 40 years old and hasn’t pitched competitively since the end of last season. But the Reds’ best reliever (Arthur Rhodes) is 40. Weathers is in shape.

Sadly, like LRCW, I was wondering what David Weathers was up to. For as much crap as I gave him, I miss Stormy now.

UKMF, Dusty should not have used Herrera with a 1 run lead and then put in Rhodes when we were down 1. Like others, I wonder what Owings has been doing with his time. The guy isn't an all star reliever, but he's seldom used. He's a better option than Herrera & Ondrusek, IMO.

You simply cannot put Herrera in to protect a 1 run lead. It will very rarely, if ever, work out well. And then to compound that mistake by using Rhodes when we are down (and he's hurting) doesn't make the matter any better. I understand that you can't throw the same guys daily & some pitchers have to do their job better, but that was an obvious mistake. Every body in the park, Herrera included, knew that the little guy was going to blow the lead.

Going into last night's game...

Owings 3-1 3.60 ERA 25 IP

Herrera 0-2 2.92 ERA 15.1 IP

Talk about not putting a lot of stock into what people say.....ERA for a reliever is one of the most meaningless stats that there is. Herrera has been used as a situational pitcher all year, when he doesn't get it done lots of times the other relievers prevent his baserunners from scoring so his ERA doesn't go up. Owings has been used almost exclusively to start and finish innings so he really controls his own fate as far as ERA. Throwing all that out the window here's what was really relevant....Daniel Herrera has allowed hitters to hit at a .343 clip and righthanders to hit .341 against him, so he stinks equally bad no matter what handed batter was coming up. Meanwhile Owings has allowed hitters a .215 average overall and righthanders a .127 average. With 2 righthanders up to lead off the inning who do the numbers say should have been out there? I'd be interested to see you try to support your position except for your opinion that you don't trust Owings....You said in your earlier post that a manager should have confidence in the relievers in his bullpen so shouldn't that be true of Owings? And if that is true shouldn't you go with the better numbers?

Yeah, he's in shape alright but what shape is that? If they sign "stormy" weathers they have really given up. If he had anything left don't you think that Milwaukee could have used him? Their bullpen is terrible.
