It's not that big of a deal Volquez will get regular rest and Harang is a work horse.....

Aaron Harang worked four innings on two days' rest in the 18-inning debacle at San Diego. Even worse, Edinson Volquez was brought on to pitch on one day of rest after throwing 92 pitches in a stellar outing on Friday night.

During all of this, Johnny Cueto was available on three days' rest after his latest outing.

It's bad enough that you would have to use any of those guys in that situation, but why in the world would Dusty Baker opt to use Harang and Volquez — the Reds' two best pitchers — in such cavalier fashion?

Is winning that one game worth jeopardizing the long-term health of your two best starting pitchers, one of which is your undisputed ace and the other that is as young and talented as Volquez?

Dusty ought to be called on the carpet for this one.

If the Reds win, this isn't even being debated. Have NO problem at all with doing everything possible to try and win a ball game.

What should have happened IMO, is that they should have just brought in Bray from the start in the 11th. I understand that you are "saving" your lefty, but at that point, your long reliever is more valuable than your lefty. Bray is more suited for the late inning role anyways. Then you still have the option of using your long man for more than 2/3rds of an inning...

Agreed...

Including making moves that could pose some problems for their two best pitchers down the road, all for one game?

No way ... it was a bad move, win or lose.

Hold on to your hats........

Agreed. Bray should have gotten the ball with Fogg as the long term answer if things went wrong in the 11th. By using Fogg first, Dusty went all in on a bad hand. The only thing worse would have been using Cueto because he had the most rest...

Disagree 100%
You're entitled to your opinion, but I think you're dead wrong on the notion that there wouldn't be a debate about the moves if the Reds had won the game.

Baker's handling of a pitching staff is much more important than a single win or loss.

Handling of the pitching staff is an ongoing issue, and always will be, with Dusty ...

It's an ongoing issue with every manager, not just Dusty.

If a manager brings in a pitcher and he fails then it's the managers fault, and he gets the blame for bringing in the wrong guy.

Nothing is said if he brings in a guy and they win.

But in certain circumstances, like the 18th inning game or the 22 inning game I mean you try and watch out but you still don't want to overuse your bullpen.

A sticky situation.
