I don't even think it's debatable, mostly because I think it's harder to win in the modern game than it was during the Rupp/Wooden years.

I don't like him, but K's the best.

Exactly how I feel.  Definitely the GOAT and from where I'm sitting it really isn't even all that debatable.  There wasn't anywhere near the competition during Wooden's era and the NCAA tournament wasn't even remotely what it is now.

Plus, Wooden didn't have to deal with hardly any of the NCAA regulations that coaches deal with these days.

It was so much easier for Wooden, and yet no one else is anywhere close to his record from that era.

On the other hand there are multiple people close to coach K in his era.

I am not saying coach K isn't the goat, but it is definitely up for debate in my mind. The 12 Final Fours with 5 titles are stronger arguments by far than the number of wins. Coaching 46 years are part of him leading in the total wins.  If Few, Calipari or Self would coach 46 years they will pass him in total wins. Being 9th in winning percentage is the opening for others to be considered.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Wooden, because I think he's the clear #2.  And I very much respect John Wooden.  I just think if you put K in that era, he'd come much closer to replicating the success than if you put Wooden in K's era.

There.  I'm done defending K.  See what you made me do?

One thing I took from all these numbers is Huggins has to be the best coach without a title.

It's not really debatable, IMO.

Pick any championship team from K's era and have them play any from the Wooden/Rupp era... The older team would get boat raced. The competition isn't comparable.

Not fair or realistic. You have to stay relative to the era - compare coaches/players to those in their era. If you measure across eras, Jesse Owens isn't Olympic caliber. Jim Brown isn't even a top 10 NFL running back.

Coach K is probably the GOAT and make me sick to say those words. He has also gotten  by with  ( A LOT OF CHEATING ) being the Golden Child Program of the NCAA IMO. They Duke get the best brackets come tourney time and get by with so much flopping its sickening. NC and Duke will take huge steps backward without Roy and K so KY needs to seize the opportunity to take control of College Basketball again.

I don't think it is fair to make a comparison of Wooden to K based on quality of the players and other teams around them.  Different periods.  However, I do think both would have succeeded just as well in each other's time periods.  I read their books and studied them.  They both have an incredible work ethic, an attention to detail and the ability to transform a dream to succeed to the players on their teams.

Jay Williams is saying to not be shocked if Coach K returns next year. With the loss of Nolan Smith there is some worry if Duke can hold on to their current recruiting commitments.

Is there any chance he pulls a Brady and returns?

I don’t think there’s any chance he does that at all.

Side note. One of Duke's top recruits is Kyle Filipowski. Projected as an NBA lottery pick in 2023. His brother attended UofL.

But before rumors go any further on that one. The Filipowski family are huge Duke fans and it is a dream come true for Kyle to be at Duke.
