Casinos, Gambling and Gaming in KY

Shouldn't people be allowed to do what they want with their money?

Yes, and they should also be responsible for their actions. Meaning, it's not the state or casinos fault that someone doesn't have the self-discipline to not lose their mortgage at the boat.

I am against it. It's a vice. Money isn't everything. Adding to the state's coffers shouldn't be the reason to add casinos.

@RandyParker provided many reasons against it in his posts and linked articles.

It is just my opinion. I think casinos bring an unsavory element to a community and region. We're better off without it.

Evansville added a casino over 20 years ago and it did not add an unsavory element. I'm pretty sure French Lick is a nicer place since adding their casino but @rockmom can better comment on that then me.

Maybe casinos brought an unsavory element to an area back n the says when the mob was running them. But if you take a stroll through any casino (or at least the couple dozen I’ve been in all over the country), while you might see a few characters, I doubt you’ll see many people I’d out and out describe as “unsavory”.

I figured my opinion would not be popular, but it is my opinion and I would vote consistent with it if this sort of thing came to a vote.

I had a whole lot more to say on the subject but decided not to do so. Just suffice it to say that it has to do with a set of values I hold. Some you may agree with, others you won't.

I will say that having a casino definitely helps us maintain two iconic hotels, 3 golf courses, 2 spas and grow the resort as a whole. There is no “unsavory” elements. Even our non-gaming guests enjoy our resort and many drop a few bucks in the casino just for the heck of it.

As to to our community, Orange Co is among the highest in poverty rate. The resort is the largest employer, employing over 1400 people, including those in the casino. The majority are from Orange Co and the immediately surrounding counties. Because of our LDA, the casino contributes directly to several counties economies and contributes to school systems separately. Because of the casino, highway improvements and flood mitigation has been a priority for the state.

The casino draws no greater number of unsavory individuals than a church bingo or a race track. For any unsavory guest at our casino, one can find hundreds of people who are just delightful. For any resident in the area that may be unsavory, they are not the product of the casino.

OG, I do not game. I don’t enjoy it and I don’t even do church bingo. But I do not feel that my personal opinion should be the opinion of all. I don’t golf either, and consider it a colossal waste of time and money. Working for a place that offers both, I will say that there are some really nice people who game and nice people who golf. And just the same, there are some rude, obnoxious jackboots who do both. I will also say that a true gamer isn’t likely to be the obnoxious drunk, causing a ruckus in the lobby. But it’s not uncommon that that person be a golfer

Are you also against cigarettes, alcohol, the lottery, fast food, etc.?

Agreed.

IMO, the poor will continue to be poor and it has very little to do with casinos.

On the other side of the coin, those who work their way out of poverty would have achieved that goal with or without the addition of casinos.

I'm all for sin. I'm good with bringing in casinos and sports books as well as higher taxes for cigarettes and alcohol. Also for legalizing marijuana and taxing it.

Why stop there? Legalize prostitution and tax it as well. The state's budget issue would be solved fairly quickly until the politicians figured out a way to mess the additional revenue. Hopefully it would take them a couple decades to mess it up though.

Sure, why not? It would prove safer for the workers involved and would generate more tax income. The problem is that the workers in that profession prefer to work under the table, so to speak. Legalized prostitution in Nevada generates $75 million per year while it's estimated that illegal prostitution in Las Vegas alone is a $5 billion a year industry. Much harder to regulate than gambling, cigaretes, alcohol and marijuana.

There will always be illegal gambling and prostitution in the state of KY. It would be nice if there were legal options for those that wanted to do it correctly.

Why is that? That makes no sense.

Mainly because prostitution isn't legal in Las Vegas. Only cities/areas with populations below a certain threshold have legal prostitution in Nevada. That probably leaves a large portion of the market under served, especially in Vegas. Which leaves the pimps a wide open market to step into.

Rule #1 in Vegas if your are in a bar late at night and a girl who seems out of your league starts hitting on you , she's a working girl.
