BluegrassPreps.com 9th Region Boys Basketball Preview - (2022/2023)

Is time flying, or am I just getting older, or both?

I can’t believe that we’re already at the dawn of a new season, but believe me I’m not complaining. This is my (and likely your) absolute favorite time of the year knowing that the 9th Region nets are about to heat up to get us all through the cold cold winter months.

I know that I speak for a lot of 9th Region fans, but after we’ve spent many years with ups, and mostly downs where by state comparisons we were walkovers to not exclusively, but almost always powerhouse teams from either Louisville’s Regions 6&7, and Lexington’s Region 11.

Well, this is NO MORE! Over the last 10 years, strong teams from the 9th Region have made the state of Kentucky take notice that we are solidly a class region not to be taken lightly.

In that period we’ve had 3 state champs with Covington Catholic cutting down the nets at Rupp, first in 2014, then again in 2018, and the Bluebirds of Highlands taking it all in 2021. In all 3 state champs, one state runner-up in Cooper, and 7 final four appearances.

One of those final 4 appearances came last season at the Covington Catholic Colonels lost a highly contested squeaker against a very tough Warren Central from Region 4 who went on to be runner-ups by a mere point to the undefeated against Kentucky competition, George Rogers Clark Cardinals from Region 10 who along with winning the Sweet 16 ended their season with a very impressive 37-1 record.

So what we have in store for the 9th Region’s 22/23 season is perhaps a field of teams closer in parity than we’ve seen in quite awhile.

I think that most will agree that the Colonels of CovCath still sit at the top of the pack as the season begins, but maybe not the sure assume most have considered them to be in just about every season over the last 10 years.

We've many teams this season loaded with experienced talent that can go a long way to make this season in the 9th a highly exciting competitive season.

One exciting change of affairs that I’m sure most 9th Region fans are excited about is that last season’s nearly 40 ppg phenom Jacob Meyer from Holy Cross has decided to forego his prep play in Atlanta, GA to remain here at home for his senior season. What a gift to the 9th to have received this great news that we get to watch first hand such a special player that even has a chance to break the 9th Region all time scoring record that had been recently broken by Scottie Draud of Beechwood in 2021.

Let’s take a look at what this undoubtedly exciting season will give us as we discuss the rankings.

I’ve already seen one coach’s poll, as well as the CatsPause Rankings, and while they’re slightly different, and I generally agree, I have just a couple of hunch’s of my own that have me shifting around a couple of teams and players here and there.

Ranking the Region:

1. Covington Catholic - The Colonels graduated 1 player from last season’s starting 5 in big boy Miami(Ohio) Redhawks commit Mitchell Rylee, and lost another big in Chandler Starks who opted to play out his senior season across the pond at Anderson High School playing football, and I’ll assume basketball. They also lost 6th man James Wilson who helped the Colonels tremendously in a tourney game in last season’s Sweet 16. They still should be quite strong with the top notch guard play of senior Evan Ipsaro, along with the experience of varsity veterans senior Kascyl McGillis, and junior Brady Hussey also including a supporting cast of undoubtable upstarts that the Colonels are presently grooming to be future Colonel stars.

2. Conner - I will admit; I’m high on the Conner Cougars this season. They’re loaded with senior lead experience, and I completely expect an incredible season from them culminating with a very legit campaign to win the 9th Region. They’ll again be lead by sharp shooter and Top 10 player Landen Hamilton, 3 point phenom Ayden Lohr, the strength of Daniel Campbell, and Dalton Kramer. Look for them to give the Blue Colonels all they want as they match up maybe even twice this coming season.

3. Lloyd - While the Juggs lost some senior talent to graduation, they still have strong ever maturing experience from Top 10 player and senior NKU commit Jeremiah Israel, coaches son and sophomore big boy EJ Walker who has had more college offers than we can count. Sophomore Isiah Sebastian who got some good varsity minutes last season as a freshman guard telling us that he was a player to keep an eye on . The Juggs finished last season with an impressive 22-8 record, beating Highlands twice, and making it to the 9th Region Final Four. I’ve little doubt that they strongly feel that they still have something to say, and I fully expect them to do all they can to prove it. Coach Walker has his young men in a winner state of mind.

4. Highlands - I expect the Bluebirds to be very strong this season led by sharp shooter Top 10 player Will Herald. While he’s dead eye from the 3, he showed us signs last season that he was becoming a decent all around player up and down the court, and on both sides of the ball. He’ll be supported by other players who got a lot of varsity experience in juniors big boy Brady Benke, Cameron Giesler, and Nathan Vinson, along with the highly versatile and dynamic Seth Ryan.

5. Cooper - Some have them higher in their rankings, and it would be hard to argue that they should prove to be a very strong team this season. For starters we all know by now that the highly defensive play that Coach Sully demands will always keep the Jags in every game as they keep almost every game a low scoring affair. They don’t care if it’s pretty, they simply just aim to get the win. Cooper will be led by big boy Caleb Brooks who is such a reliable player who will give everything he’s got to give to ensure a Jags victory. The kid is a winner, and boy did the Jags ever get an early Christmas gift when junior Jashaun Pouncy of Boone Co. last season who transferred to West Clermont to play football, to just turn around and transfer to Cooper to play basketball. Pouncy is a top notch player who arguably could find his way as a top 10 player before season’s end. I expect his name to bump up high in the conversation now that this already mature looking talented player gains even more experience. Look for the Jags to just like always be a highly competitive team in the 9th with their eye on the prize.

6. Holy Cross - The Indians had everyone question what their season might look like without the dynamite services of senior phenom Jacob Meyer, but the entire region has rejoiced in finding that he has decided to play out his final high school season right here at home. What a major difference this makes for the Indians as they now have a legitimate chance to make some big noise in the 9th this season. Aside from Meyer a lot of that noise will be made by the lightening fast great shooting of senior guard Javier Ward. No matter his ever improving basketball skills, there’ll be big boy giant Sam Gibson, biggest player in the region, who no doubt alters shots with his size that by some accounts is now 7 feet give or take an inch. The big question for Holy Cross is for them to fill up the starting five due to the loss of Dylan and Zach Arlinghaus to graduation along with the tough as nails defensive play of Maddux Hoffman.

7. St. Henry - I expect to see with the ever steady coaching of David Faust, the St. Henry Crusaders build on the experience that they gained last season with the likes of senior Matthew Resing, Rhet Ravenscraft, Brandon Fedders, Jack Grayson, Ethan Kaiser, and junior Carson Shea. We’re now looking at a senior led team, and that in itself speaks volumes. Look for the Crusaders to compete, and keep the 34th interesting.

8. Dixie - 9th Region runner-ups with an impressive 22-7 record, the Red Colonels lost a lot to graduation last season, but they’ll still have the tough as nails excellent services of junior Hudson Blank. Personally I haven’t seen his play, but word on the street is that sophomore Griffin Derry is going to be a good one for the Red Colonels. They may suffer some early from lack of experience but as the season progresses I fully expect that coach Stansforth will have his team in shape to compete for the 34th district title, or at least a runner-up position to put them in the 9th Region tourney.

9. Newport - There’s been a lot of excitement brewing for the Wildcats as they have some incredible young talent who has been getting lots of varsity experience, and the season should prove to be a real breakout season for them. Freshmans James Turner and Jaylen Kinney along with senior Marquez Miller will lead the Wildcats with experience and talent beyond their years. Look for the Wildcats to increase their campaign to be in the discussion, continue to rise for the next few years.

10. Beechwood - The Tigers will bring back senior team leader Cameron Boyd and the excellent guard duties of freshman phenom Cash Harney. Look also for the senior Trevor Logue and sophomore Kelly Mattox to bring with them their valuable varsity experience that they gained last season.

It’s ok but not sure how Cooper’s Yamil Rondon doesn’t make any mention whatsoever. His play will speak for itself. Cooper will be a force for with the addition of Pouncy.
it will all shake itself out in the end. The 9th will be a very competitive.

Truely only because I'm unfamiliar with Rondon. Thanks for giving him mention so that we know that he's someone to keep an eye on.

Looks like there might be some good teams in the 9th this year but can’t see anyone stopping CovCath from making another trip to the Sweet 16. Sad to say this but their district has become so weak since Holmes is no longer relevant.

B-Ball fan - great job with the breakdown. I think the 9th region is more open this year than it's been in several years. Cov Cath will always be good. Lloyd is rising. Cooper will be right there in the mix especially if the one kid is ruled eligible. I think Highlands could drop back a "little" bit but Herald is a stud.

I will say that Conner at #2 and Holy Cross at #6 shocked me. If there are 5 better teams than HC this year in the 9th I'll comeback in February and say how wrong I was. Good luck to all the teams it should be a great year to watch and follow.

Thanks for the feedback.

I yearly expect each season for the usual suspects to find their team ranked too low in the pre-season rankings. There’s a few of you that I can’t satisfy, but I'm cool with that as I find it humorous where if I complied I’d be ranking teams in this format. 2a, 2b, 2c… You get the gist.

We’re all pretty much on the same page that there’s very little difference from teams 1-6 or even 1-7 that you sorta just have to apply whatever logic one might to divide 7 teams so close in parity. I played my hunches, and being the author of a preview doesn’t make me all knowing, I just sort it out in my head the best I can to try to make sense of it all. Everyone has their own personal take on it, biased or not. When you question the idea of 5 better teams this season than HC take into account that because I numbered them as such doesn’t mean that I see a grave difference from team to team in the hierarchy of their ranking 2 or 3 could almost equal 5 and 6. It’s sorta like splitting hairs.

Regarding the Indians, I supported my positioning them at 6 simply by the big question of who will fill in the gaps in the starting 5, and how effective they might be. I’m looking forward to the Matt Dreas that you spoke of because I was previously unaware of him, and I trust that you’ve seen his talents first hand to be able to alert us to him. I also supported my take on Conner because of their senior experience of talented players. I literally don’t know how they drop off after their top 4 players so my hunch there is either spot on, or it isn’t .

I like all teams, and don’t often play favorites with any of them. I enjoy seeing any team succeed and I pull for them to do so. There’s typically one team each season that stands out to me that I think could have a special season, and this season I’m high on Conner. But being a Covington boy, I love seeing Holy Cross do well. How I rank them isn’t indicative to how I feel about them. I'm excited as can be to see how they’ll do this season. Pumped like crazy to be able to watch Meyer in his senior year. Excited to see the fast as lightning of Javier Ward. Can’t wait to see how Gibson has grown and progressed. My all means, I’m totally cool with them having a great season.

At the end of the day though I can’t rank every team at 1 and 2. But I'm all for hearing what everyone else’s Top 10 teams are, and hear their take on why they think so.

Diminutive, but talented, guard, played at St. Cecilia, ELITE soccer player, has been with FC's DA for the last several years.  A senior.   Rumors out there that he would be playing hoops this fall, but there will be rust, and their back court (HC's) is above average with Jake and Javi.  I think Holy Cross could well have a magical year, but I'll be shocked if Matty Dreas will be the driving force for it.

I think it is great if he is joining the team, and his classmates, and I admittedly haven't seen him hoops in 4 years, but I'm not sure he is putting them over the top.

Unless he can (and is willing) to throw an entry pass to Gibson, and if he can and will do that, than they could be onto something down by the railroad tracks!!
