Greatest Comebacks

Recommended Posts

What are some of the greatest comebacks in the history of KY high school football? Games where a team just stormed back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit to either win the game or take it down to the wire.

I think the one that comes to mind for me was Trinity and Scott County in 2012. Scott County had a 14-0 lead in the fourth quarter and Trinity came back to win 21-14.

I know there are many more. Which ones stand out to the rest of BGP?

1999 4A State Semi Final: St. X @ Hopkinsville

Hopkinsville scores its third touchdown of the first half with about 10 second remaining in the half. X's Ryan Payne returns the ensuing kickoff to about Hopkinsville's 35 yard and X kicks a field game to head to half time down 21-3.

With about two minutes left in the game and X down 21-16, the (X) Tigers game winning 80 yard drive is capped off with a TD pass from Eric Sailing to Brooks Mayer to send X to the state championship game.

In the 2005 4A Region 1 finals at Warren Central, Christian County led 35-14 entering the fourth quarter. Very little had gone right for Central since the first quarter, culminating with a pick six that put the Colonels up by that margin. The Dragons scored their first TD around the 8 minute mark of the 4th to make it 35-20 (missing the PAT). The most dramatic moment came in their next offensive series after holding Christian County to a three and out. The Dragons faced a 4th and 21 with about 5:30 left, and completed it just over the fingers of a defender, with Nikko Beason taking it to the house to make it 35-27. A bad Colonel punt after another quick possession set the Dragons up deep in Christian County territory, and they converted to make it 35-33 with just under 3 minutes remaining. They failed the two point conversion, meaning they still needed the ball back. This time Christian County got a first down but still had to punt the ball away. With 15 seconds left, the Dragons made a 20 yard field goal to go up 36-35, clinching the win. They possessed the ball four times in the fourth quarter, scoring on each possession. They ultimately scored 22 points on those four possessions in just over 8 minutes of game time.

LexCath had a pair of very good ones in 2012 versus Boyle County.

The first was the regular season match up at home against their arch rivals. On the first drive the Knights leading tackler, and long snapper, Josh Mesmer went out with an injury causing Sophomore Chase Bowling to have to receive his first real varsity minutes. Later the Knights were down 14-6 when their QB Kyle Bolin, a 4 star UofL commit and Mr. Football candidate, scrambled up field. Bolin attempted a cut and went down without contact. Bolin managed to run off the field after tearing his ACL, an injury that ended his high school career. Sophomore Reese Ryan came in to get his first game action that wasn't at the end of a blowout. What did he do? Nothing but throw a 50 yard bomb to Freshman Sam Letton who made as good of a catch as you will see. Catch by SAM LETTON - SAM LETTON highlights

Unfortunately Sam got a concussion on the play and would not finish the game. Going into halftime the Knights were without their Best offensive player, best defensive player, 2nd leading receiver, their long snapper, and their top 2 punters in Bolin and Sam.

Coming out of the 2nd half everything seemed to go against the Knights. After throwing the long touchdown pass Reese Ryan looked like the young player unexpectedly thrown into the fire that he was, throwing a pair of interceptions deep in the Knights own territory one of which went for a Rebels touchdown. The loss of the key special team positions hurt LexCath as well. A Knights punt from about the 5 made it to maybe the 15, setting the Rebels up with amazing field position. The Knights defense was very strong however, holding the Rebels offense to 0 points out of the 3 times they were given the ball deep on the Knights side of the field, forcing a turnover on downs on the 2 and blocking a field goal attempt. All the momentum was on the Rebels side still however, as the Knights could not get out of their own way, having 2 touchdowns of 50 yards+ get called back.

With the struggles of Ryan, senior Amoh Kumengisa played the hero. The running back had 3 touchdowns on the ground and over a 100 yards rushing. Two of his TD's came during the comeback, a 41 yarder and a 22 yard dash that turned out to be the game winner.

The game still came down to the wire however as the Rebels drove down the field, with a pair of amazing 4th down conversions, to have a chance to tie the game with 20 seconds left on a field goal. The kick was far left however and the Knights were the victors.

The 2nd one was the rematch in the regional championship game that season. The visiting Rebels roared out to a 16-0 halftime lead over the Knights. Lexington Catholic took their best hit and came back with a haymaker of their own, outscoring Boyle 27-0 to claim the region championship in back to back years, the first time in school history that feat was accomplished. Truly a tale of two halves.

Great choices.

The second game was the second most heartbreaking game I have ever attended. The Knights stopping Boyle on 4th and 1 was insane. What a game.

I can't remember the year but Trinity @ the Manual Mausoleum. The Rams had a 10 point lead late in the 4th quarter and had been running the ball very effectively against Trinity all night. Instead of grinding it out and running the clock they throw a deep pass that was picked. Trinity scored quick and failed to recover the onside kick. Manual again gets away from what got them the lead and tries to throw the ball and again it's picked deep in Trinity's territory. With just seconds left Trinity goes deep to Steve Orndorf who outruns the Manual secondary to score the winner. After the game the Manual student section basically blocked the gate off the field and and out of the stadium. Trinity had to stay on the field for almost 20 minutes while the Manual administration dispersed their crowd for fear of altercations.
