Championship games and RPI

Looks like for the most part RPI did what it was supposed to do. All 6 games next weekend have compelling matchups. A few really good teams in loaded districts went a round earlier than normal, but overall it seemed to work.

In several finals you have two teams that under the old system would have met in the semis.

IMO 5 of the 6 classes has the best 2 teams in their class playing for the Championship. Two Thumbs up :thumb::thumb: to the RPI!

The important part is having the best two teams playing for each championship, IMO.

I think we can all agree that the RPI “formula” needs some obvious tweaking. But the playoff format under it was a success. I love that the KHSAA has followed other states lead and attempted to make it to where the best teams are playing the final weekend.

With this RPI setup, could it have been possible for Male to play Trinity last week in the semifinals if the ratings were a certain way?

Yes, if they had been 1 and 4 in RPI or 2 and 3 they would have played in the semis.

If they would eliminate the intro-district play and return to cross bracketing in the first three rounds, then I think a lot of criticisms would evaporate. There is no getting around the ridiculous travel problems that can be/were created by the RPI in the semifinal round, but other than that, I have to agree - we mostly got the best teams in the finals.

5/6 is pretty darn good for the first year of the new system.

I would imagine the Commissioner, the Board of Control, and the football committee are rather pleased with the results.

How about JUST using the rpi system for the playoffs? Top 32 teams get in and play it out that way. That would get the actual best result, I would think. The parity of this year's 3A class would have made for some really interesting early round games.

From the 10,000 foot level it got the results it needed to get. However, seeding or “ranking” wise, I do not think 1A was correctly ranked. Paintsville and Pikeville should have been 1&2. They were 2&4.

Yes if you have a situation where the top 2 teams are in the same district, such as Somerset and LCA, they could still meet in the state title game instead of the second round.

What I like about this system is that in 6A there can be two Louisville teams in Championship. In the old system this could only happen every other year.
