Whale Wars

Anyone watch this show on Animal Planet?

A sea vessel, The Steve Irwin, harrasses a fleet of Japanese whaling ships (4 hunting ships and one processing ship). Using speed boats, the crew of the Steve Irwin will try to come along side the whaling ships and throw bottles of acid onto their decks in order to drive the whaling crew off deck. They also try to release rope lines in front of the whaling ships so that it will get entangled into the ships propellers.

The Japanese whalers have resorted to throwing objects from their decks at the crew in the speed boats, blasting them with water cannons and now using an LRAD (ultra high frequency weapon) to defend themselves.

I hate to say it, but I find myself rooting for the Japanese.

I've watched every episode of both seasons. I cannot for the life of me understand how you could be for the Japanese when they hunt and kill hundreds of these animals annually.

With that said, I watch this show weekly even though it is boring 75% of the time and the narration is like a broken record, a lot of the same scenes and dumb drama unfold.

I see whales as a resource much like other ocean creatures (tuna, sea bass, crab, lobster, etc...) I dont see too many people complaining about these tasty creatures.

As long as these are processed for food, then I dont see it as something horrible. There are limits to the number of whales these ships can kill.

As per the show, i consider the members of the Steve Irwin as hostile, aggressive, and terrorists. I wonder why the whaling ship has not fired a harpoon across their bow to defend themselves.

I watch it every week. I think Paul Watson is an arrogant jerk. And, I can't stand his first mates, the two Peters, Brown and Hammerhead. They irritate me.

I'm not a fan of killing whales, but like you, I find myself sympathetic with the Japanese at times. Not the Japanese in general, but the guys who are specifically working on those ships. They're not in charge of calling the shots. Somebody else is making the decision to send out whaling ships. Those guys are just trying to do a job.

I think the Sea Shepherds act like a bunch third graders.

Interesting show though...I like it.

I pray that Whale Wars will be off the air shortly; it's just not entertaining to me, but neither is Deadliest Catch or Ice Road Truckers...or Ax Men for that matter.

Now, Pawn Stars...that's a great new show.

All the shows you mentioned have gotten old quick. Look there they go again chasing a boat. Yep, catching more crabs and its cold. Driving over ice again...

Pawn Stars at least offers variety.

I like the idea of the show, but the show itself is awful, however, I still watch it for some crazy reason. Paul Watson is weird that is for sure, as well as his crew. However, there is no limit to how many they can kill, this one specific country (Japan) set a goal of 90 Miki whales and 20 others. That is 1 country, if you feel that whales are just a resource, then I feel sorry for future generations if they can never see a LIVE one, all resources are expendable and whales, ocean life period are ver thin. There are people concerned with the other animals in the ocean, obviously you have no concern for them, therefore, you wouldn't recognize the efforts of so many.

Due to their size, whales are picked on and slaughtered much like elephants and other large animals, history has shown that the large creatures are the first to go because of the intrigue. Please become more aware of our resources and don't pass them over feeling they can just replenish themselves over and over.

It is just ironic to me to see pacifist idealists try to affect change without resorting to legit violence. Other than being a minor inconvenience to the whalers they are utterly ineffective.

Actually for last year Japan set a quota of 750 minke whales and 50 fin whales (which are listed as endangered). Japanese Whale Quota

Last year they came up about 300 whales short, at least partially due to the Sea Shepherd's harrasment. And this year, they'll have a new ship.

This is of course until they start asking for escort from a Japanese destroyer or cutter. If this escalates that will happen.
