Dead Period Question

I have a quetion, I know during the dead period that teams can not have organized practices, but can he players by themselves hold practices without coaches?

Not on school grounds and with absolutely no school resources. It can also in no way shape or form be mandated or scheduled by a coach and unlike "voluntary" off season workouts, eyes would not be averted if this were violated by the coaches.

How certain are you that players cannot use the school's weightlifting facilities during the dead period?

Most families of footballers plan vacation around the dead period. By keeping it static, you eliminate one of the weeks as a possibility. For example, this year it started on a Wednesday. It ends on a Tuesday. Since most families plan on a one week vacation and since most vacation rentals are from Saturday to Saturday, you've narrowed it down to only one week that a family can take that week-long vacation. Why?

I doubt 90% of the coaches could tell you the dates of the dead period about 3 months after it s passed. Therefore, they , like us, have to look it up each and every year.

Make it begin on a Saturday and end on a Sunday. Really - how hard is that?

Well said. The problem is that this makes too much sense. You are going to confuse people by thinking this way.

Pretty sure.

Bylaw 26. Summer Sports and Sports/Activities

Sec. 1) School Team Play in Summer

Member schools may participate in sanctioned play during the

summer to complete spring seasons in baseball, softball, tennis

and track and may begin sanctioned regular season play and

practice as defi ned by Bylaw 25 prior to the opening of school in

cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer and volleyball.

Only participants eligible during the spring semester may compete

on the school teams. All KHSAA eligibility rules apply, and full

control of the summer program shall remain with the participating

high school and the principal of that school.

Sec. 2) Summer Dead Period

Students may not receive coaching or training from school

personnel (either salaried or non salaried) and school facilities,

uniforms, nicknames, transportation or equipment shall not be

used each year in any KHSAA sanctioned sport or cheerleading

squad during the period beginning with June 25, and going

through July 9. School funds may not be expended in support of

interscholastic athletics in any KHSAA sanctioned sport during

this period. These restrictions shall not apply to postseason wrapup

activities, celebrations and recognition events relating to a

spring sports team at a school which participated in KHSAA state

championship play in that particular sport during that particular

year.

(Case situations related to this bylaw appear on pages 19 through

43 of this Handbook)

This way coaches can't feign ignorance of when the dead period starts and ends. It starts and ends on the same date every year, just like the first day of practice.

IMVHO this is one of the things that KHSAA has done correctly and it shouldn't be changed one bit.

So we're concerned that coaches will use ignorance to their advantage so we simplify it for those? How about just enforcing the rule each year. We'll tell you the dates. You'll abide by them. Or else.

Let's not get too specific here, as we need to remember Rule #4.

4. No school-specific (or general) recruiting comments or allegations of KHSAA rules violations by any school, coach, player or booster are allowed. No talking about where any player lives, has lived, or where they are from in a recruiting context. This is not the place to report KHSAA violations. Feel free to contact www.khsaa.org to report such violations, but do not discuss violations here.

If they have a child on the team, they are allowed to be at the event.

What you described would be a big no-no.

Infamous decision on the dead period when it first came into play.

Cheerleaders from somewhere in the state wanted to wear their uniforms and march in the July 4th parade. Was told no because it was the school purchased uniform. They could buy on their own, tshirts and shorts and march in it.

I think the dead period is great and for the protection of the child.

Parents can count on that from June 25th to July 9th EVERY SINGLE YEAR that their child will have NOTHING in regards to HS athletics. They can schedule vacations and outings at that time and do not have to check on what date it is this year.
