KHSAA to consider multipliers and success factors for football realignment - What might it look like?

Here we are 9 pages in and I still have no idea what the goal is. Who are we trying to help? What problem are we trying to fix?

And I will add, separating out 16 private schools is ludicrous.

Honestly, it’s a few complainers we’re trying to appease.  The same people we were trying to appease when Kentucky went from 4 classes to 6 classes.  Everyone wants a ring.  If it were me, I’d want to go through the best to do it, not separate them out to make it easier on me.

And I agree that going through all the trouble to separate out 16 teams is ridiculous and if we’re honest, it’s really just 3 or 4 people want separated out….the other 12 or 13 are just collateral damage.

Finally, let’s say we did divide it out and did two private divisions with 8 teams each.  Is nobody going to talk about how the private schools would lose two games a year due to an 8 team bracket vs 32 team bracket?  Do we start their playoffs two weeks later and allow them 12 regular season games?

Are we going to penalize public schools because they swept the boys and girls basketball tournaments?  Are we going to specifically penalize GRC for doing so?  Of course not.  Nor should we.  The whol

I have the same question, before any tinkering or wholesale changes are made, someone needs to lay out the desired outcome in a clear concise manner. I'm not sure what they are trying to accomplish.

I for one am fine with the current system, it may not be to everyone's liking but I feel it is better than nearly everything that's been proposed.

Bottom line is it’s not up to none of us what happens, so everyone on here telling how it should be ain’t going to change anything.

If something does change, that idea has to come from somewhere so who knows where the right seed gets planted.

I'm okay with having multipliers or whatever it is called that move teams up in class when they have consistent high-level success over time. Moving a team up a class because they won a title last year is ridiculous.

You have to look at least two years and probably four years deep for factors that would cause you to move a team up in class. e.g. a team is in the semifinals 4 staight years, or a team wins back to back championships. The key for me is one great season should have zero impact a team's class the next year.

I think Indiana does something like that. But I know schools can request to play up a class. I know there was one year that Highlands played up in 5A even though by enrollment they are a 4A school.

I found this from the NFHS as it relates to Indiana.  I am not going to crunch any numbers but I know some of you will.  If we are wondering what teams the KHSAA would end up targeting, this is probably a pretty good way to access it.

To prevent schools from dominating any one class for a given sport, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has designated a “success” factor as part of its procedure.

Adopted in 2012, the success factor is built on a point system that evaluates schools’ sport-by-sport postseason finishes over the two years of a standard reclassification period. Any program that wins a sectional championship is assigned one point, with two points credited for a regional championship, three for a semi-state championship and four for a state title.

If a school team accrues six or more points during those two seasons, that team will compete in the next-highest classification for the following two-year period. Should the program continue its same level of success in its new classification, it will be moved up once again, with no limit on how high it can climb.

Once elevated, teams must register two points during the next reclassification period to remain in the higher class. A team that has ascended multiple levels but fails to garner the two points necessary to stay in its current grouping will move back down the classification ladder one rung at a time.

Here you go on Indiana @JuanHenry1997.

Is the KHSAA the worst thing to happen to football in Kentucky?  6 classes, RPI, now this.  Do they not look around the country and see how ridiculous the current set up is compared to other states?

Once the spread offense came to the state the competition has been very top heavy in each class. When everyone's offense was "3 yards and a cloud of dust" the lesser teams could hang with the big boys so to speak. No matter the class system it's still going to be top heavy. Go back to 4 classes get rid of the RPI.

  • Just for fun
  • Can get a general idea (ie: Top 5 biggest in each class, Top 5 smallest? USUALLY where any/all movement comes from)
  • All listed smallest-largest for each class
  • Total Boys Enrollment= Far Right Column
  • Class Enrollment Rank= 2nd from Right
  • Middle Four Columns= L-R ( c/o '28, '27, '26, '25)
  • 1A (Yellow) & 6A (Blue)= 32 Teams (I listed Christian Co and Hopkinsville both as "32" in 6A)
  • 2A (Orange), 3A (Green)= 39 Teams (** Have no idea if that will be the case or not, just how I split them up**)
  • 4A (Light Blue), 5A (Red)= 40 Teams (** See 2A, 3A justification**)

Several teams playing up a class, which I think was a lot from 3A up to 4A in this, would be a huge struggle but the numbers aspect makes a lot of sense. It would be fun to see alignment like this though! Thanks for the spreadsheet

Looking at the numbers for 2A, I was surprised to see both Mayfield and Beechwood towards the top of the enrollment...since both were 1a schools within the last 8-10 years.  Lots of increase at those schools.

That is what caught my eye too. I didn't realize how close Beechwood is getting to potentially being a 3A team. Which also in turn would give them some better competition in possible district play, and some fun possible matchups in the playoffs.

Beechwood, I imagine, will be very careful to avoid getting lumped in with CAL. They have always kept a tight rein on enrollment.

Sadly, I didn't read all the posts in this thread, I read the abstract.  So, it could all be fixed by having the appropriate amount of classes for the number of football playing schools in the state.  We are a four class state, do that and all of a sudden the issue of needing to move the good schools up goes away, for the most part.  The simple fact is, you can't move all the winning teams out of your class so you look better.

This very act, or discussion of, proves we do not have the proper number of classes for the Commonwealth.  The KHSAA just told you so.
