2013 NKY Freshman Invitational Tournament played at CovCath

Recommended Posts

Any opinions on who may win this, or what frosh we should look out for?

I'd say the favorites are Holmes, NCC, Covington Catholic and Simon Kenton. Bottom half of the bracket is really loaded, so whom ever makes it out of it should be the favorite. Crazy things can happen, obviously. Last year, Holmes was the favorite, but got beaten by Highlands in the first round.

Last year Holmes brought down Bolden - lost in the first round. NCC brought down Pangallo and didn't advance. Both teams had plenty of talent without the JV kids dropping down.

The teams that advance are the talented teams that play together all year all season.

Where are they now?

Tanner White- Ryle

Burt Pouncy- Holy Cross

Dasean Peterson- not playing

Travis Pavy- out for season with torn Achilles

Donovan McCoy- not playing

Brandon Hale- not playing ???

Blake Maines- not playing????

Maines was cut this year along with Price WHO was another decent Conner Frosh at the time.

Pavy was another stud from 6th-8th grade then he got big for football and was never the same.

See my post #10 and my post #15 about the smaller schools!

Sorry TOG, this doesn't hold water....the small school Freshman are not involved in the All A and when you look at the listings there are a number of "A" schools that participate in both the Freshman Regional and A tourneys. (St Henry, NCC, Ludlow, Holy Cross) The Freshman Regional is a much more of an exclusive invitational tourney than a true regional contest. The games have typically been run by the three mentioned in the thread, officials are hand picked rather than rotationally assigned by region. This is a great tournament that has been going on for a long time and nothing bad to say, but it is definitely a freshman invitational all the way around.

16 years old and still a freshman? What's the world coming too?

All to popular anymore. One team in the tourney last year had a kid drive to the game. Now there is talk on here about how good the kid is for a sophomore and yet he is already 17 or darn close to it.

I have been told the small schools held there own Freshmen tourney!

Speaking of not calling it a Regional tourney because some school aren't playing, then do you believe that the Ninth Region Tourney shouldn't be call a regional because Cov Latin hasn't been playing in it for years?

I am not aware of any small school Freshman tournament in NKY. I do not want to confuse "Regional" with the KHSAA alignments of a Region (8,9,10,etc...) as much as a geographic regional invitational, for Freshman. As someone mentioned, it seems to be limited by the use of only 1 gym and a small group that manages the invites to teams. A previous post mentioned that some schools kept their "commitments" to the tournament and that's why they still participated. IMO that implies that the schools who may not get invited did not keep their commitments ?

As far as a "Regional" tournament, no school is required to participate in post season play within their districts or regions and in some sports "opt out" because of lack of ability to compete. (Happens more in football than basketball and is declared prior to scheduling. The tournament is still a regional tournament, with teams from the local area. This is a great tournament, but if expanded could be an even better event. It sounds as if there are some schools that might like to be involved if the tournament was expanded.....anyone out there that might float this idea to the organizers ??????

My post #10

The Freshman Regional Tournament originally began in the early 1960’s. Some of the hosts of the tournament were Ockerman Junior High School, Newport Catholic (now NCC), and Conner High School. The tournament moved to Covington Catholic in 1970, and has remained since that time.

In the early years at Covington Catholic there was a twenty team field, and the tournament would be played over three consecutive weeks. After a few years with the large field, the single ‘A’ schools decided to have their own tournament.

Miller post #19

The small schools opted out in the very late 90's when they invented their own small school tournament, which I thought was a good idea since it gave them an opportunity to end the year on a win. The small school tourney hasn't been played in a few years, and also had been played sparingly since 2002.

So what teams do you know that's want to enter?
