This is the information that I have received regarding this prestige and long running Freshmen tournament, played at Covington Catholic since the early 1970's.

The draw is this Sunday at Covington Catholic .

There will be 18 teams playing in the tournament this year.

There will be 8 games played on Saturday, Feb 2nd starting at 10am, with 1:15 minutes slated for each game. The additional 1st and 2nd round games will be Mon and Wed at 6:00/7:15/8:00.

The semis will be Saturday, Feb 9th at 4:30 and 6:00.

The finals are Monday, Feb 11th with JV at 6:00 and Freshman at 7:30.

After the draw I will post the parings, dates and times of the games.

Remember these games are for the kids, we hope you attend and cheer on your favorite team and players but please bring your sportsmanship, fair play and manners with you when atteding.

Let's all make this a fun event for the kids to remember a lifetime!

Note I tried to make the brackets easy to read but.....

Mr Andy Zerhusen the Assistant Athletic Director at CovCath hopefully will post the bracket to the CovCath.org web site.

This is a corrected schedule, as neither Newport Central Catholic or Simon Kenton were listed on the 1st attachment! I will announce when you can fine the schedule on CovCath.org.

Does anyone know where you can go to see the freshman scores and team records for this year?

Does anyone know where you can go to see the freshman scores and team records for this year?

Very few if any teams post any information about their Frosh teams and the local newspapers post nothing at all, not even for this tourney.

Might I suggest if your trying to find information about one certain team you look at the school web site and maybe you might find out something there.

I will post the scores of each game after they are finished, with a quarter by quarter score , plus hopefully the top two or three scorers from each team! There isn't a lot of time between games, so I can't get much more done than that!

I don't think walton or Scott are in the same region as Cov Cath? Is this more of an invitational?

To answer your question no!

Information taken from last years 2012 program...

The Freshman Regional Tournament originally began in the early 1960’s. Some of the hosts of the tournament were Ockerman Junior High School, Newport Catholic (now NCC), and Conner High School. The tournament moved to Covington Catholic in 1970, and has remained since that time.

In the early years at Covington Catholic there was a twenty team field, and the tournament would be played over three consecutive weeks. After a few years with the large field, the single ‘A’ schools decided to have their own tournament. Since that time the tournament field has fluctuated between approximately fourteen to sixteen teams. Jack Kaelin directed the tournament for many years, with his last year being the 2006 -2007 season. It has been through his efforts that many of the traditions have continued.

A number of successful athletes have performed on the stage of the Freshman Regional Tournament. In 1981, a larger than life, little man made up a full page spread in the Kentucky Post after leading his team to the Freshman Regional Title. Three years later he led his varsity team to Rupp Arena. Today Jim Pangallo coaches the Junior Varsity at his alma mater, Newport Central Catholic. Other notables include Charlie Chappie, Tom Hummel, Dennis Wolfe, Henry Drees, Bryan Sandlin, Dave Scheibly, Bob Cole, Bob Burkart, Tim O’Hara, Tom Freppon, Dan Shields. Many other players have sharpened their skills in the Freshman Regional as well.

In a similar way, referees too have experienced notoriety. The Freshman Regional has seen its fair share of referees that have gone on to call varsity regional games. Other referees have been selected to partake in the Varsity Regional; a few have even been selected for the Kentucky Boys Sweet Sixteen Tournament.

The Freshman Regional has maintained very good crowds in past years. In particular, the finals typically draw large crowds, and even saw one sell-out in the 1990’s (a finals match-up between Highlands and Covington Catholic). Come experience the finals and watch the future of Northern Kentucky High School Basketball.

So as you can read, this tourney has been played for quite a while and the coaches and teams each enjoy the experience, as well as the many, many fans who come and enjoy quality basketball year after year after year! Back when this tourney started Walton, Simon Kenton and Scott were all Ninth Region teams!

So do all original teams still get invited? I don't see a lot of small schools on the list. Just curious of how a team makes the cut to this "regional" tournament.

Great tourney, I've seen many of the games and great players. Always love to see the 20 something players that make the all tourney team and see how many dress varsity in the later years. Fun to get excited about what the future holds for NKY.

Agree this is always a quality event--Just curious like TAC why they don't "invite" all the NKY teams (at least all the old 9th region) to a "regional" tournament? Best of luck to all the participants.

I believe you said, or someone said last year, that BB didn't play due to scheduling problems.

As far as I know and you must understand I don't sit in on the scheduling and was in fact at the gym with the Varsity at practice during the draw but yours is a question for someone other than myself to answer!

Not I, as i'm not in the know on those types things; but it's noticeable that along with BB, Campbell, Bellevue and some others aren't in the field? CC & BB in particular have fielded some pretty good freshmen teams over the years--Maybe its a "regional except for Alexandria" rule?? :D:D

From the 2011 Freshmen Regional Tournament hosted by CovCah thread....

Brossart hasn't played in the CovCath tournament since 2004 (I think) when we were forced to miss a game due to a scheduling conflict with the district and/or 10th Region Tournament.

Since then we have opted not to play in the CovCath tournament.

We would certainly have liked to have taken a whack at it this year, but you can't pick and choose the years you play or don't play - you are either in or you are out.

It's something that we probably need to re-visit. The CovCath tournament is first-class event, whether you are a contender or not, and Scott and Simon Kenton seem to make it work.

Simon Kenton handed us our only defeat of the season. They must have a nice freshmen team as well.

Good luck to all on a great tournament!

BTW did you notice in my post #10 which said the following....
