Congrats to Mr. Cohorn. I thought he was very good HS Football player. Showed moxy when he played. I think he will be a good fit at Thomas More. Not sure if it will be next year or sometime down the road, but I can see him being the key 3rd/possession receiver at TMC. He has a very good feel for finding the open spots in the zones, and has very good hands. May not be a Speed burner, but I think he will be a very solid player who will find a way to get on the field for the Saints. He is the type of player that TMC excels with. He may not be quite big enough, or fast enough to play at the D1 or D2 levels, but works hard and simply knows how to play the game. I'm sure that Coach Hilvert is excited to have him in the fold!

I think the game should be close, but I fear that HC could get out quickly and force CovCath into playing from behind. If that happens I could see HC winning by double digits. If CovCath can keep it close heading into the 4th, then its anyones game. More importantly if CovCath can keep this game close, the rematch in the 1st round of the districts will be anyone's game. If this game ends up close I think the pressure in the district will fall on HC. They have had a fantastic season, but as we have all seen in the past one bad shooting night against a quality opponent and your "Dream season" can become a nightmare. I'm rooting for a Colonel victory, but as long as it is a close game I'll feel good heading into the districts.

I think he coached at school in Columbus after leaving NewCath. Not 100% sure on that, but I know it was a large public school in Ohio, and I don't think it was a school in the Greater Cincy area. I talked to him the summer after his first year. He was already planning his return to the area. He had just come off a pretty successful run at NewCath with Jimmy Pangallo and Sandfoss etc. He told me he called a Saturday practice and the kids told him, that wasn't possible because there wasn't Bus Service. His quote " I knew I had made a mistake, right about then"

Congrats to the Ruschell family. They come from a great family. Their uncle Keith was a long time holder of the tackling record at NewCath. The record has since fallen, but I believe the defensive player of the year award is still called the Keith Ruschell award. Keith recieved a football scholarship to Xavier. Sadly Keith died in a fall at Red River Gorge when he was in his early 20's. Tim was a solid football player and wrestler as well at NewCath. They were all part of the Brother Joseph Wilhelm legacy at NewCath, during their glory years of wrestling. Over Christmas break I witnessed a humorous outing for the Ruschell family. Tim, Kyle and TJ were all at Chipotle. Tim and Kyle were putting a serious hurt a those delicious burrito's. Poor TJ, obviously in the throw's of the season drank water and nibbled on small pieces of chicken!

I heard both Max Halpin and Jake Henderson are being looked at by the NAIA schools. I beleive that Tim Connaughton has decided not to pursue football at the next level, even though he has Georgetown and a few others interested.

The reality is that the past 10 years of Highlands Football success is unmatched in any other decade. While Highlands has always been at or near the top in Football, they have never experienced a period of dominance like they have recently. Their basketball teams were good year in year out, but never were considered dominant other than a year here and there. As their success in football has increased, more and more players want to be a part of that. Losing 2 or 3 players a year from the basketball team to focus only on Football, and you have your answer. Even if those players aren't the best bball players on the team. Take any of the other schools in NKY, and subtract 2 or 3 players a year from their program and I believe you would see similar results. While Highlands has defied the numbers with their succes in Football, the school size and their demographic have not been able to over come losing those 2 or 3 players a year. A big part of Highlands Success in football is because of the sacrifice their players make to the program. It just so happens that one of those sacrifices is also a top level basketball program.

Now that was funny. It also maybe the longest thread about Cov. Latin sports that isn't reflecting upon David Justice.

Does the compliance department have a UK mailbox?

I would love to know what HC does to get kids so effectively through the KHSAA eligibility requirements. It seems like every year they have a kid transfer from another Greater/Cincy school who has played varsity at their previous school. Last year it was McClendon, this year it's the Pouncy kid, and now it sounds like another transfer is coming in. Let's face it if this were Highlands, CovCath or even Holmes there would be a much bigger outcry. I am for kids going to school wherever they feel they will get the best HS experience, however it does seem that for whatever reason HC never seems to have a problem getting through the KHSAA microscope. To be clear I don't care where the kids live, I am specifically talking about the KHSAA rule that makes a player automatically ineligible if they have played varsity sport at one school and transfer to another school, without a valid change of address.

He is defintely a better athlete. Jerry Arlinghaus was the ultimate competitor and utilized his God given talent to it's maximum. He had good size, was fearless and was a pretty accurate passer. In my opinion Fuller is a much greater running threat and has a stronger arm. Fuller could play RB, WR as well as QB. In fact if he plays at the next level I would expect him to be a d-back or WR. Fuller probably doesn't check down to his 2nd and third options like Jerry did, but his arm strength probably allows him to make throws that Jerry did not. Having said all of that, I think it's very hard to say who is the "better" qb. It's somewhat like comparing Montana vs Brady.

I have watched two games that JC has played. They are a shadow of the team they were the last two years. They O-line is not nearly as good, and they have no one the caliber of Ousely and Bratton in the backfield as lead blockers. Their pass D is very very poor. I would expect Towles and co. to rack up some serious passing yards. If Highlands has a weakness, it's probably their run D. Having said that they will be able to stack the box with 9 players, with very little fear of JC's play action passing game. That by the way is their only passing game, play action. That is only effective if you can consistently run the ball. The key word being, consistently. I think Jude will break off a few 8 -15 yard runs, but he will also see his share of 0 - 2 yard plays as well. I'm expecting a large margin of victory somewhere in the 30 - 40 point range.

What was the score of the SK game?

They way Holmes has been playing lately, I would expect JJ to have that by the end of the 1st half. The only issue will be that Holmes sends the house on almost every play, leaving them very vulnerable to passes. If JC is their normal self, they don't throw the ball. I still expect Jude to go over 250 in this one.

what happened to Hatton?

They lost a game to Dixie which was not part of the official large school schedule. They have two losses on the official schedule, 1 to CovCath and 1 to Boone.

Presently Dixie is 6-1 with one game left against Ryle. HHS is 6-2 with a bye next week. CovCath is 5-2 with a game against SK. Ryle is 5-2 with a game against Dixie. Boone is 5-2 with a game against Cooper. If Dixie wins they are in as #1 seed. If CovCath and Boone win there is a 3 way tie for 2nd HHS, Boone, CovCath. If Ryle wins there is a 5 way tie Boone, CovCath, HHS, Ryle, and Dixie. Unless Cooper or SK win next week at least one team will be getting to the Championship via a tie breaker. What that is I do not know. Last year CovCath and Campbell played a game on Monday night to determine the 2nd seed. 5 years ago HHS, Covcath and Campbell county flipped coins to determine the 2nd seed. It is my understanding games not on the "official" large school schedule do not count. Meaning the 1st Ryle v Dixie game does not count, nor does Boone's loss to Beechwood or Highlands game against Trinity or CovCath's game against Campbell County.

I believe the 1st Dixie loss does not count. It is the 2nd Dixie game that counts. The first game was an added game. If they beat Highlands and Dixie, no matter what happens with Boone, Ryle, Dixie and Highlands will all have 2 losses, and would be in a 3 way tie. If CovCath beats Boone and SK, that would make it a 5 way tie, with who knows what type of tie breakers.

If Ryle wins their next 2 games, they would be at least tied for a chance to play in the Championship game. Now they have to beat both Highlands and Dixie to do that, but it is still in their control.

I believe the only tie breakers that are officially agreed upon in the Frosh is head to head competition. Last year CovCath and Campbell had a similar situation. Both teams finished 7 -1, with the loss to Highlands, but did not play each other in the regular season. Technically a coin toss was the method proposed to decide the tie. Both programs agreed to play a "play off" game on Monday night prior to the championship to decide the tie. IF all 3 teams finish their big school records with just 1 loss, I believe Boone gets in because they do not have a loss to one of the other two. Then it would be Highlands because they beat Dixie. That is not official, but that is my understanding of the head to head rule for tie breakers.

Who was injured? They looked pretty impressive against the Camels. The offense isn't very complex but very effective. I think this a very typical Ryle team. Hard nosed, smash mouth football with out turning the ball over they are a very tough freshman team.

Last three years under Coach Wirth vs Highlands are as follows: 2009 Highlands 36 - Covcath 7 (CovCath led 7 -6 after 1, 2 4th quarter TD's by Highlands put the game out of reach) I believe it was the time Highlands trailed at the end of any quarter all year long. IMO the best Highlands team in the past 10 years. 2010 Highlands 27 - Covcath 20 (Covcath ends the game inside the 30 with an incomplete pass at the 5) 2011 Highlands 42 - Covcath 37 (CovCath 1st and 10 at the 17 in the final minutes of the game, but Highlands defense steps up and keeps CovCath out of the endzone for the victory) The past 3 years the games have been competitive. The past two years they have come down to the final possesion. The varsity players on both teams have not been involved in any of the "blow out" losses that occurred in 2007 and 2008. Admittedly the two previous years CovCath players were somewhat satisfied even though they lost. In 2009 they felt they were competive again. In 2010 they felt they had closed the gap and were with in striking distance, having remembered 2008 and 2009 games. This year they are distraught over the loss, feeling (right or wrong) they let this one get away. The point being is that CovCath knows they have to still climb the hill, but for the first time since 2006 they now can see the top of that hill. Now just like any obstacle many times the last few steps are the most difficult, but it is also much easier to motivate and stay focused when the goal is whithin reach.

If Holmes continues to feed the ball to Scruggs, something I do not believe they were doing earlier, their offense becomes significantly better. He has the speed, vision and balance to be in the top 3 backs in NKY. Having said that I think NewCath's offense will have great success against Holmes defense. Holmes relies heavily on pressure. Mis-direction and play action will give them fits. Hitchew is very good at the read option, he will expose an over aggressive d-end very quickly. Holmes struggles mightily in the passing game. They have both Scruggs and Peterson who are great recievers, but they struggle delivering the ball to them. If Holmes can keep from falling behind two scores early, this could be a very entertaining game. My prediction however is that NewCath's D will cause several TO's and give Newcath short fields to work with. Newcath 38 - Homes 18 (they STRUGGLE kicking the ball!)
