Covington Latin Trojans find their first victory of the season in a hard fought battle that saw multiple lead changes against a feisty bunch of Raiders in front of an excited hot packed, chair seating only gym at the new downtown Cincinnati SCPA. These young men came to play, and it's a wonder that they weren't lined up in the emergency ward before the sound of the final buzzer. The Trojans were lead by a balanced scoring attack from their top go-to's of Mitchell Blewett, Dorien Clark, & their quick gritty, hot-handed point guard Ben Knapmeyer, all recording double figures of 15 points or more. With neither team providing deep benches there wasn't much rest for the weary, but this didn't stop anyone on the court from showing an undying passionate charge in their spirit-filled attack. Taking nothing away from Clark or Knapmeyer, it must be noted what a player the Trojans have in strong 6'3" 13 year old Junior power forward Mitchell Blewett, who as a Sophomore recorded a double-double average on the season. Playing nightly amidst collapsing defenses, Blewett will strongly power the ball to the basket at will, creating his own shot with great body control and accuracy that's gonna connect more times than not. The kid is a machine and at 13 could easily pass for 17. It's scary to think what he will be like at 17, but by then he'll perhaps likely be well on his way to being a theoretical physicist or something of the sorts at a highly reputable university. This kid is a work horse and has got game, and any team in the land would strongly benefit from his services. Any doubters can check him out tonight as the Trojans travel to Villa Hills to take on the Blue Lightening of Villa Madonna Academy for a 7:30 matchup.

Someone needs to correct the score on the Riherds KHSAA website. It shows the Trojans winning in lopsided fashion.

 

Congrats to Latin. I think Mitchell Blewett has caught the attention of all of those of us who follow high school basketball in Northern Kentucky. Continued success to him and the Trojans.

 

I see that Gene Morrison is still coaching at CovLatin. Seems he has been around forever!

Congrats to the Trojans and I love seeing these guys have some success and be recognized as athletes. Do we have the next David Justice in this guy? If I remember correctly, David's basketball skills were being recognized well before his baseball.

 

I also agree with Mustang about coach Morrison. Anyone know how many years he has been on the sideline? Seems to me he started coaching back in the late 70's, early 80's???

According to Covington Latin's website, Gene Morrison has been at Latin for 32 years. Not sure exactly when he became their head coach.

I don't think Morrison coached Justice. I believe Fr. Heile was still coaching then. I remember seeing stories about Justice in his CLS days and he always talked about Fr. Heile as his coach.

In related news, the Jamican bobsled team thinks it can make some hay in the next olympiad, and Panama's hockey team is progressing quite well.

It also maybe the longest thread about Cov. Latin sports that isn't reflecting upon David Justice.

Fr. Ed Heile definitely coached Dave Justice during his playing days at Latin.

 

I remeber scouting a Latin-St.Henry game and got the brilliant idea that Justice was going to get his 30, why don't we double team the bad guys when they were in possession of the ball, instead of trying to double Justice.

Jon Quatman was our head coach at the time and we played the Latin game at the St. Thomas High School gym. He adopted my plan and Justice had 30 by halftime and we trailed by about 15 points. Quatman looked at me sternly and asked, "Do you have any more good ideas." I answered "Yes, one more, let's play a 2-3 zone in the second half, I don't think Fr. Ed is savvy enough to pull us out of it."

While they didn't pull us out of the zone and played against it, Justice still ended up with over 40 that night, and we still got beat.
