  1. CovCath is peaking at the right time. This game (as usual) was won in the trenches. The Colonel o-line dominated the JC defense of front 7. The Colonels used a variety fronts and personnel groupings to stymie the JC offense. Luke Bir is finally healthy as is the o-line, and it really showed last night. Sam Burchell was on top of his game last night. He controlled the running lanes from tackle to tackle. Ben Dressman has gone from a shaky, fundamentally challenged QB to a confident play maker. Not sure if they have improved enough to challenge the Birds next week, but they have improved as much as I have seen any HS team do in a 9 week stretch. (I'm talking about after the injuries from the Dixie game). It at least make next weeks game to look forward to.
  2. Heard a very interesting rumor today from some GCL insiders. Their saying that Steve Specht and Kerry Combs maybe candidates for the HC at Miami. Very interesting if true.
  3. First let me say, I have no idea what his status is. However, if he is back and healthy the JC game in round two is a toss up. If he isn't back or isn't at least 90% I think JC becomes the decided favorite. During the past 5 years CovCath has only lost 1 or maybe 2 games (last year against Conner, and perhaps 2010 against JC, don't know who was the favorite) when they were the favorite. On the flip side in the past 5 years they have only won 1 or 2 (2010 vs LexCath, and Perhaps 2011 against Ashland) when they were the underdog.
  4. It's far from a sure thing, but I still say its a 50/50 proposition that Trinity could end up as the 6A state Champs. Their regular season record is 4 -5. If they were to go on and win the State title would they be the first team with a losing (regular season) record to win a state title?
  5. Does Johnson Central have a stronger passing game than in years past? Are they still a 90% run 10% pass type of team? While I some times question Coach Matney's special play decisions, you can't help but admire the program he has put together at JC.
  6. Very impressive game by HHS. They were the more physicall of the two teams. They bruised and battered the Panthers. If the coaches switch sidelines I guarentee Elder would have won by more than 3. I have to ask why doesn't the Hayes kid play more. He is a very explosive player, I would think he would be very effective as a change of pace back.
  7. Good to hear I was getting a bit concerned when I saw the 36 on the board. In the past two weeks they given up almost 80 points. That's a ton of points to give up in two games.
  8. When I was in college the ST coach ( a grad assistant) only was responsible for FG and PAT. The KO and Punt were run by the Def Coordinator and the KOR and Punt Ret were run by the Off Coordinator. The def Coordinator made a big deal of being selected on those teams. He did use non-starters (like myself) but also had some prime-time players as well. We had a D2 All American at OLB, and he begged to be on the KO team, because of how the Coach hyped it up. His name was Coach Wheeler, and we all got to write W's either on our face or on our arms. Only the KO team were allowed to do this, and be part of the "Wheels" team. As a Freshman there were many guys who played significantly more defensive snaps than I did, but were down right PO'd that they weren't on the "Wheels" team. Result we had the best KO team in the Conference. The average starting field position after Kick Off's was the 22 yard line. Our kicker did not have big leg either, we only had 3 touchbacks the entire year. Lou Holtz said it is the best way to improve a team immediately. He said it takes time to install a defense with your type of athletes and the same for Offense. He said every program he has seen can improve the ST with more focus and practice.
  9. That is awesome. I wish I had my son's Jr. and Sr. season set up like that.
  10. Outside of Coach Wirth's office, I'm not sure anyone knows why. The players definitely don't, nor the parents. This may go down as an Unsolved Mystery of the Football season, like why doesn't Ryle open up their offense, or why doesn't Covcath use a TE, or why doesn't SK and Highlands play etc. Keeps BGP in business!
  11. I think the question is when Wag's returns. If he returns for the last game of the year or the 1st round of the playoffs and is at 80 % or better, you go with Wags. If he doesn't return until round 2 of the playoffs, probably against JC, I think it's Ben Dressman if you feel like you can beat them mainly running the ball. If not you may see both playing in that game. To have any kind of shot at making the HHS game competitive, I believe Wags has to be playing at his best.
  12. Didn't the CovCath Jr. High team ( last year) beat the Ryle (Jr. High) team pretty convincingly? What has changed in the past year? I know that Jr. High and Frosh are two different animals, just as Frosh and Varsity are two different creatures as well. I was just surprised at the Margin of victory and was curious if I was incorrect on the results at the JR. High level last year.
  13. I agree this would be the best choice. However, two things work against this. The limitation of no games past the last varsity game and more importantly a limit of 10 frosh games. Most schools didn't want to only schedule 8 games in the "regular Season" with the chance they wouldn't be in the top 4. The tried the "two Tier" playoff top 4 and bottom 4 and no one in the bottom 4 played. The compromise was the two teams with the best record met for a "Championship" game. This way everyone can schedule 9 games and keep the 10th open for a final game if you choose. Not a great solution, but it was the only thing that most of the schools would agree to.
  14. What's my position? I was just commenting that a few years even if Highlands wasn't in the mix they wouldn't have won state those years. They were very solid teams, just not state Championship caliber.
  15. Actually only two times in the past 5 years has Highlands knocked CovCath out of the playoffs. The other times it's been Johnson Central.
  16. shocked by this one. How did Ryle score so many points, passing or running?
  17. A wonderful lady who has battled hard. I truly believe she is in better place, her suffering is over. It's the family and friends who she leaves behind that have the suffering now. Her courage throughout her battle with Cancer was inspirational. My thoughts and prayers go out to her entire family.
  18. I would hate to see this rivalry end. CovCath no longer plays NewCath, or St.X (Louisville), two games that were always a challenge for the Colonels. So I guess it's possible the game could end, but it would be a great loss of revenue to both schools and quality games for both. I keep hoping there is another reason for the JV game being cancelled, something that hasn't come to light yet.
  19. Don't know the reason, but it is extremely disappointing. Without knowing the reason I'll give the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt and hope it is for a very good reason. Having said that I know that there are a whole lot of disappointed JV parents who would also like to know the reason. I feel for both the CovCath and HHS JV players. To put the amount of time and effort in that both of these programs require, and only get to play 4 or 5 games is tough on kids. Hopefully they use it as another life lesson that HS sports teaches. Hopefully they all stick with it and come back more determined than ever next year.
  20. So they are playing tonight against Ryle, but cancelled the JV game Saturday? Something else is up, (I hope). Injury situation won't be better tonight vs Saturday. Something doesn't make sense here.
  21. I think Mr. Schneider always valued his role as teacher higher than his role as Coach. Don't get me wrong he was extremely proud as coach and was consumed with Football during the fall. However, he always stressed academics and discipline in the classroom more than performance on the field. I also think it was part of the culture of NewCath through out the 70's and 80's All of the coach's were known as Mr. over Coach. It was Mr. Schulte, Mr. Krebs, Mr. Dawn, Br. John Lyons and Mr. Schneider. Perhaps its part of the Christian Brothers influence the school had for some many years.
  22. While I agree Elder will go to power football, don't discount their passing game this year. Ramsey's son is a dual threat QB. Something that I think could give HHS problems. A QB that can run and throw along with a Power running game will be a very formidible mix for the Birds. Also remember they play Winton Woods before they play Highlands, so they will not be shell shocked by the speed aspect of the game. I think this will be a very fun game to watch.
  23. Perhaps the best Coaching Job in Ramsey's tenure. Even the most ardent Elder fan was thinking that a 5-5 or 6-4 record would be considered a success. Having said that they are 5 -1 and 3 of the 4 teams they play are undefeated (Moeller, Winton Woods and Highlands) The fourth being a very capable La Salle team. So it's not out of the realm that 6-4 is still possible, but so is 9 -1. I think the Elder vs HHS will be a great game to watch, two contrasting styles at the Pit in late October.
  24. Congrats to Coach Brossart keep up the good work! When does Dixie play SK, that will be worth seeing!
