  1. I agree that ultimately the head Coach is responsible for his teams discipline. However, discipline starts and ends at home...If kids hear parents that are constantly belittling or degrading coaches at home and in the stands, it has a ripple effect to the locker room and ultimately the field. Let's not kid ourselves that NewCath's players are "inner City" in the sense that they have no respect for authority of any kind, school and coaches included. The socio-economic make up may not be the same as Indian Hill, but the vast majority of the kids at NCC are from Middle to Upper Middle class homes. If they are saying the Dan didn't have discipline on the practice field and at games, then he has changed his coaching style dramatically, and I have a hard time believing that. If they are saying that parents/coaches didn't show respect for Dan, and thus the players didn't respect Dan, then there is a bigger problem at NewCath. Having said that I remember in the not to distant past, before his latest 9th Region title, parents bad mouthing and complaining about Ron Dawn and the fact that "boys Basketball" had passed him by... sounds like the culture at NewCath sports might be the problem.
  2. In four years 2 state runner up's a loss in the quarter finals and a second round exit in the playoff's... While the last two years haven't been ideal, the overall accomplisment in 4 years is pretty strong... I'm still not convinced there's not more to the story... this was Dan's dream job, and he still seemed to have the passion for coaching earlier this year when I talked to him.
  3. Was it a forced Resignation or is Dan just ready to move on with something else?
  4. I can't believe Ron Dawn would do that after one sub-par year... if he's gone there has to be something else behind it.
  5. To the Camel fans who did you think was better Covcath or Trinity?
  6. If the birds lose by 1 because of the failed 2 pt ouch!
  7. I think CovCath is a 27 point favorite... but Rivalry games are always a concern... the Troy vs So. Alabama game is a perfect example... Troy beats LSU at LSU, then loses to a 1 -4 So Alabama team who was just plain awful the weeks before... Rivalries have a way of skewing the odds... having said that... Colonels 49 - Birds 21
  8. Wow.. that's fantastic... Makes you wonder what the EKU coaches were thinking...didn't give him much of a chance his last year there
  9. My son also suffered a Torn Labrum in HS football around game 6....He went the rehab route so he could come back and play the last 2 regular season games and the playoff's ....He missed 2 games and a bye week, but he was able to play the last four games of his senior season...he had issues while he played but was able to play thru the discomfort... unfortunately after his football days he did not have the surgery and still has some issues with shoulder some 6 years later.... I don't remember if it was a SLAP tear or another name... it's my understanding that certain types of tears are able to heal, others will never heal...again... I would follow Dr. K's advice...
  10. Congrat's to AJ... quality kid excellent player... I think he has made a wise choice... Miami is a great school, plays a good brand of Football, and Family and friends can watch him play...
  11. Congrats to Coach Brausch... knew him a long time ago... seen him at coaching clinics a few times in the past.... One things for certain the amount of Bling in Bracken Co just went up substantially....
  12. My junior and Senior year combined, we lost only 1 game at NewCath...score was 3 -2, the most any team scored on us there was 7 runs...That was right as the Hill was starting to fall away...Left was still 300 then with at 20 ft fence... Having Doug Losey two time player of the year as the Ace helped a bunch, but Rick Noll (Xavier) and a few others faired pretty well up on the Hill as well... Great memories...
  13. I thought CovCath's offense played very well, Mcguiness is special, and AJ as a runner is a great 1 - 2 punch... Defense is another story... they have many areas of concern... last night D-line played pretty well, much better than against Ryle... Might be the competition, but d-line played a good game. The secondary is really struggling, they don't seem confident in their scheme, and they don't tackle well overall. I don't know if it was kids not following their responsibility, or a poor defensive call, but several times in the 4th quarter Oak Hills had multiple wide open recievers... I think they scored on 3 drives of less than 3 plays in the 4th quarter... that just can't happen to a quality HS defense... if the scheme and/or the execution don't improve passing yards against CovCath will continue to be record setting in a bad way.
  14. Overall this team is not as talented as the previous few. Not saying there are not very good players, there are some very good players. The Senior class overall is not a great football class, some good players but overall not the same level as the norm. They are starting a Sophomore QB, they lost their best Offensive weapon in game 1, and they are struggling to find an offensive identity. Talent wise, while down from year's past, they are good enough to compete against and possibly beat the remaining teams on their schedule, with the possible exception of Scott Co. The concern I have is that if they don't come out and play well, and beat, LexCath it will be a difficult mentally to right the ship. The facts are, they are not a great team, but luckily for them I don't see any great 5a schools on their side of the bracket. So if they can right the ship this week, not an easy task in Lexington, I think things will be fine. If they should lose to LexCath, it might be a very long year in Park Hills.
  15. First of all, I am not Dr and didn't stay at a Holiday in Express either. Nor do I have any insight to the extent of the injury or the surgery for young Mr. Darlington. However about 3 years ago WR Evan Braun from CovCath had a similar Injury against Moeller. He had surgery and was back on the field 6 or 7 weeks later. Here's hoping that a similar recovery can be made by Ben.
  16. For me the best High School player I played with was Billy Vogt from NewCath, he graduate in 1979. Billy wasn't very big, but was the best open field runner I ever saw. He wasn't big enough to play RB in college, he played DB for Morehead in the early 80's. He averaged over 9 yards a carry his Senior year. Sadly he was never given the ball more than 15 times in any game. The best I played against was "Fast Freddie" Jacobs from Wyoming, who went on I believe to Penn St.
  17. An Unknown NT - Newport Central Catholic I had to play center my senior year because our center broke his thumb, and in the playoffs we played NCC. Their NT was a "mountain" and went on to play at Notre Dame. He was good and huge. I was average size and, as a center, started every play with one hand between my legs. I had a pretty good game against him, but after the game I honestly could barely walk. I was sore and so tired the next day I couldn't do much. Not tooting my own horn, but I left everything I had on the field that night. He was on the same level as DeAnthony Honicker above. The former line coach at Raceland still talks about that game and frequently asks me, "Do you remember that NT from NCC that you went against your senior year". I just say "Yay, I remember him". Then he says, "I don't know how you blocked him". If they played at NewCath and went to Notre Dame... 1981 was Mike Kiernan, then later in the decade Frank Jacobs went to Notre Dame and caught the winning TD in the Fiesta bowl in 1988. I don't think there was a NewCath Player who went on to play at ND from the 1990 or 1991 squad. May have been a heckuva player but didn't go on to ND
  18. Very similar but not quite to the level 2010 season. When they faced Hempel from Ryle, Towles from Highlands, Krummer (sp) from LaSalle, Bolin from LexCath, Pike from Dixie, Colisimo from Beechwood all D1 college Qb's (at least for a while) add to that Michael Kremer from Campbell County who played a year at TMC, along with the QB from Louisville St. X who I was told played at a d2 school. Brady Hitchew from NewCath also could have been a D3 qb, had he not chosen baseball. They also faced the Qb from Johnson Central, who I believe went on to play at Pikeville. Looking back that was the year of the monster QB's on CovCath's schedule.
  19. CovCath is not going to the GCL.. They may play more of them on their schedule in future, but they are not joining the GCL. While I am sure X can pay a great sum for a HS Basketball coach, is that enough to lure Coach R. I don't know all the details, but I am pretty sure that his main source of income is not from the Paycheck he receives from CovCath. Would an additional $25,000 or $30,000 make big difference, maybe, maybe not, all depends on the amount of your other income. For me it makes a difference, if your income is already in the $250,000 to $300,000 per year range, not as a much.
  20. If Alex Wagner isn't at least 90% it will be difficult for the Colonels to win. He and Zumdick are crucial to stopping the belly option. The defense they have employed the last two years has relied heavily on the Safeties to play discipline defense, and be sure one on one tacklers. While there is some young talent in the secondary, they drop off significantly as sure tacklers compared to Alex Wagner. They other thing to remember is that CovCath's offense was able to control the game the past 2 years with the balanced run/pass attack. If Adam Wagner is not able to play, they will become way to one dimensional. McGinnis can do his part running the ball, but he is not nearly as accomplished a passer as Adam. I believe Dressman is still unable to throw very well, so that leaves about 50% of the offense off of the table. Last year CovCath's o-line dominated the JC's d-line, and Dressman, for the most part, had his way passing and running. While the O-line has been decent at protecting the QB this year, they have not done a good job of run blocking in general. As a result I think this game will be a tough one for the Colonels. If both Wag's are healthy and play, I think their chances are good. If either are less than 90%, I think it's a toss up. It would be a nice time for the early season Special teams to show up again. A TD on a KOR or PR would be huge!
  21. My observations maybe skewed because I have watched the Colonels pretty closely over tha past few years. I'll grant that as far as quickness and agility Highlands O-line is way ahead of CovCath's. I will also tell you that the Colonels d-line is for the most part a very athletic group. If you don't believe me either watch the Moeller film, or talk to the Moeller offensive Line coach. He commented on the athleticism. They were undersized and thus outmanned against Moeller, but that is was not the case against Highlands. Their techniques were poor, and as the game wore on and apparently their stamina lessened it got worse and worse. Their play after the 1st quarter looked like they had run a 10k before playing. As far as LB's go I would agree, with the exception of Pitzer HHS is much more athletic and fundamentally sound at that position. Overall I stand by my statemnt that athletically there is not an overall advantage in Ft. Thomas this year. The teams are very evenly matched. If Highlands is able to play Elder a close game I will admit my assesment is wrong and that there is still an Athletic advantage in Ft. Thomas.
  22. Here's the cold hard facts. In the 9 games that CovCath and Highlands have met with the current Off. Coordinator and HC at CovCath in place, only twice has the offense scored 20 or more points in a game. The one notable exception was in 2011 when they ran the ball 47 times and scored 37 points. That same year in the playoffs they ran it 25 times, and scored only 14 points. Something has to change about the offensive game plan for CovCath. In 6 of those 9 games I believe Highlands was simply a better athletic and more talented football team. Vince Lombardi on the CovCath side probably wouldn't have made a difference. However, to continually try to attack Highlands by using the same or similar game plan is by definition insanity. This year there is not an athletic advantage on the Highlands side. Please don't take that as a negative comment on Highlands, just the opposite. Highlands is able to get more out of the average athlete than any other school in the Tri-state. They instill a TEAM 1st outlook from top to bottom in the program. However, the reality is this year's team is not as gifted athletically as many of the previous teams. CovCath's offense needs to be geared toward what will allow them to beat Highlands, not to put up 40 points on inferior opponents. Establish a power running game that takes advantage of the big Offensive lineman that are in the program. Eat the clock on offense. Put TE type bodies on the edge that can block a safety or LB in space for more than 2 seconds. Maybe that won't work either, and Highlands will continue to dominate. I don't pretend to have all the answers, but this much I know. If you continue to try the things that have been done the majority of the past 9 contests, Highlands will win by double digits again!
  23. I think it can be traced to Georgetown College. Eddie Eviston put that in when he was the HC/OC. Coach Brossart at Dixie did it when he was the HC at CovCath, and I believe Coach Lickert did it when he was at Holmes. The common thread is that all are Georgetown Grads. I don't think Coach Brossart does it anymore, nor do I believe does Coach Lickert. Perhaps it's time for NewCath to move on as well.
  24. I think that CovCath should be a slight favorite in this one,but... CovCath hasn't faced a passing offense like Highlands. Moeller can have a high power passing game, but didn't really unveil it against CovCath. Having said that about the passing game, I think this game is determined by how well the CovCath D-line and LB's can contain Hodge. If he is kept in the pocket, I feel good about the Colonels chances... if he gets outside the pocket and puts pressure on the Colonels with his legs, the domino's may fall as that will open up the downfield passing game. CovCath also has to establish a running game with Darlington. The entire running game cannot be left up to Wagner.
