July 2, 200719 yr How do you interpret them? What do you read between the lines? “Jerry did the best he could do. We had a lot of veterans. If he had different guys in there, we’d have different results,'' he said. "We didn’t make any trades. We didn’t fire anybody but get him fired. It sucks.'' "But we had new guys come to the scene this year. He tried to adjust with the new guys this year, but it’s all about certain players. Ken Griffey and his home run chase, Josh Hamilton and his comeback season, everybody got caught up in that instead of winning. "We’re happy for Josh, but we want to win. And the next thing you know, Homer Bailey’s up here. We’re a team, and everybody’s worried about three guys.” http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070702/SPT04/307020023/-1/NLETTER06 ---------------------------------------------------------------- I have a new second favorite Red.
July 2, 200719 yr He is saying Hamilton doesn't give them the best chance to win??? He's saying the focus needs to be on wins and loses, not individual stories...
July 2, 200719 yr He's saying the focus needs to be on wins and loses, not individual stories... And who's fault is that?.....I'd say it lays with the manager.
July 2, 200719 yr BP has been my favorite for a while... He is the best all around position player on the team. Hobbs could be later, but I have to see more of him to make that claim.
July 2, 200719 yr Author IMHO, among other things, he is saying: * The veterans in the bullpen STINK. * Too much attention / respect is being paid to Junior during this chase. * Josh is a nice story but not ready to be a center-piece of this team. * Homer Bailey should NOT be up here. Those are my interpretations. Hats off to BP for at least speaking his mind. I could be interpreting these incorrectly, that is why I asked what others read into it.
July 2, 200719 yr Author I doubt this comment, as much as I love it, will win him many friends in the clubby. Frankly, not that it should matter. I'm sure some people think he should have kept this opinion in-house, but I'm glad he didn't.
July 2, 200719 yr He's saying the focus needs to be on wins and loses, not individual stories... IF he could get out of the shadow of JR, BP could be the leader in the clubhouse. Guys that want to do it right will fall in behind him
July 2, 200719 yr Author IF he could get out of the shadow of JR, BP could be the leader in the clubhouse. Guys that want to do it right will fall in behind him I'd say these public comments should get him completely out of the shadow of Junior.
July 2, 200719 yr To me, it sounds like BP is simply saying that the Reds forgot to be a team this year.

I agree and also include, some of the veterans aren't pulling their weight. I've always liked Phillips and he just went up a few notches, from my standpoint. He's saying the focus needs to be on wins and loses, not individual stories...Team concept, is vital and be shared, by all. This is a critical time, in the Reds future for the next 2-3 years. It will be interesting, to see how it plays out and who, will remain.
July 2, 200719 yr I'd say these public comments should get him completely out of the shadow of Junior. Thats good because as he will tell you himself, JR is not a leader, and on this team that is a problem.
July 2, 200719 yr Thats good because as he will tell you himself, JR is not a leader, and on this team that is a problem. Has there been a leader in the clubhouse since Larkin left?
July 2, 200719 yr Author Thats good because as he will tell you himself, JR is not a leader, and on this team that is a problem. I agree that Junior neither claims to be, nor takes on the role of, a leader. :thumb:
