Playoff Withdrawals

That's a pretty steep penalty considering the many factors that could contribute to a team withdrawing.

Maybe so. But if you are in a place where you have to withdraw, you probably knew it on Thursday night just the same as next Monday morning.

Maybe, but maybe not. Plenty of variables that can change overnight.

Mayfield was tied with Male and passed them last night becoming the states all time wins leader. I hope this bye by FT Knox counts as a forfeit. The Cards are 2 games behind nationally at being 2nd all time nationally.  I want that Knox win!

Is Anderson County playing in the 5A playoffs nothing is listed on the schedule on KHSAA Scoreboard and they are not listed in the 5A bracket.

I have a couple of questions.

1. Do host schools get to keep any or all of the gates for playoff/tournament games?  In Ohio, all post season contest ticket sales goes to OHSAA.  So host schools lose quite a bit in hosting playoff games.

2. You do realize that almost every high school football program loses money right?  They are not the cash cows people think they are.

In Tennessee, the TSSAA gets 50% of the gate in playoff games. They do pay the game officials. The home team keeps 25% but is responsible for security, cleanup, etc. The visiting team gets the other 25% but is responsible for their own travel expenses. On long trips (buses, meals) playing a home team that draws few fans, they often lose their shirts.

Several years ago a local team from the Nashville area had to travel to West TN and Memphis in consecutive weeks and racked up quite a deficit!

Anderson County played in a five-team district, and they did not qualify for the playoffs after finishing fifth.

I think teams should receive a forfeit win if the team they're supposed to face, backs out of the playoffs, unless they've made it known in a timely matter. A week before the playoffs start, I think that's too late! IMO

I see what you're saying, but wouldn't you rather have that win earned by the Cardinals on the field?

Do wins on these lists include forfeits, or is there an (*) and a "see the fine print" disclaimer at the bottom of the page?

Mayfield has a long and proud winning tradition. They'll get there, ideally by beating a team at War Memorial.

Well since a few teams don't make the playoffs in districts that have 5 and 6 teams are you advocating then to change the format so they get in as well since "all of these kids....deserve a chance to play in the playoffs?"  You are correct in your statement that high school sports do not have unlimited funds.  Getting this back to the argument that teams not making the playoffs should replace teams that drop out, a team not making the playoffs is going to be making a long trip.  Knowing the financials of high school sports that team is not making money on that trip. The premise of this thread dealt with teams dropping out and replacing them with teams from around the state who did not make the playoffs, which I find to be really a bad idea.  I don't believe anyone is advocating judging teams and saying well they can win it so they get in.

I think there’s lots of people on here that only think you should be in the playoffs if you’re good. There’s lots of teams in sports at every level in every sport that are bad and get into the playoffs. Look at the NCAA tournament all those teams from small conferences are not good teams. Same with the pro leagues I’ve seen teams with losing records make the NFL playoffs but that’s the way the system is set up and that’s how the KHSAA is set up. In virtually every other sport all teams in the KHSAA make the postseason and it wouldn’t bother me if it was the same in football. More football games is not a problem to me.

The KHSAA only makes money from the state championship games. All of the other money from rounds 1-4 gets split between the two schools.

I believe your comment is correct, I think the reason why Khsaa started this playoff system was so that the schools who traditionally never made the playoffs would have that opportunity. Like I've posted on here before, it’s been said when 0-10 teams played against Raceland they would tell Raceland they wanted to get the game over with so they could go home! These teams knew that they didn’t deserve to be there playing in the playoffs in the first place!

Thanks did not realize that.

If you are 0-10 and have scored 28 points all season facing a 10-0 team averaging 49 a game it's a big problem. The best solution is going back to 4 classes with the district winner and runner-up moving forward ......and there will still be blowouts.

What about a 5 class system? Or a conference system instead of districts? There has to be something.

Honestly, I like the four class system with the top four making the playoffs.  Perfect?  No.  But, better.

In the old system of four classes with the top two making the playoffs some deserving teams missed out.  Then, we went to six classes and everyone making the playoffs, essentially.  But, mixing the two would be closer to perfect as far as I'm concerned.  Would there be some blowouts?  Sure, but I think you would have better teams playing better teams and it would be a good fit.  The teams missing out on the playoffs would be able to bow out gracefully and began preparation for next season.

As @JagNation mentioned, I would be intrigued by adding a conference system to overlay district play.  Maybe with those teams in a regional conference that don't make the playoffs matching up for an added conference game to end the season.  Could be interesting.
