Can we just have a sense that if a team decided to not play in a playoff game that it is for their program’s well being and give the understanding that the coach and administrators have the programs best interest at heart no matter what they decided. Many coaches have team councils that decide things like this and have player input. Can we just not blindly judge and think we know more than the people who are inside their programs every day. Maybe they aren’t competitive enough to even consider going and aren’t afraid to call it like it is. Participation is down again and when you have 15 kids, not taking a chance of one quitting after getting their brains beat in after a long bus ride might be the best option for the program. I just can’t judge someone. I’ve been on teams that were 1-9 and couldn’t wait to go deer hunting after losing our playoff game and teams that were double digit wins and wanted to practice even after they were beat. Every situation is so different.

I will go back to a proposal I made last year. You need two wins to qualify for the tournament. If the team has 0 or 1 win, the game they were supposed to play becomes a bye in round 1 for their opponent.

4 wins should be the basement, not 2.

Why? For me, this is about opportunity. Football is a once in a lifetime experience. I want players to experience it as much as possible. I don't give a crap if a team gets a running clock on them in round one. I don't know why that bothers so many people. Let the players play as much and as long as possible.

I don't really feel very strongly about either side of the equation. On one hand, it is kind of silly to let so many teams into the playoff's/post season tournament/whatever you want to call it. Mostly because it lengthens the season for no real purpose or gain, especially in Kentucky where we start so early to begin with. I think cutting a week or two off the season, especially on the front end (starting in August rather than mid July) would be good for everyone involved. On the other hand, I do understand the sentiment in letting guys get as many games in as possible. The blowouts don't bother me, because that's going to happen no matter how much you thin the herd come playoff time. I guess if you forced me to choose, I'd say go with less teams in the playoffs. But the current system doesn't really bother me all that much. Football is a different beast than other sports, because the elite teams are so much better than everyone else, and there are so few of them. Other sports, even the really good teams can lose a game or two that they shouldn't. That really doesn't happen in football, so no matter what you do, there are going to be lopsided mismatches.

My playoff proposal would take the top 16 teams in each class and would seed it where 16 plays 1, 2 plays 15 and so forth. Here below is top 16 teams in 6A based on RPI:

If wanted to do 20 teams which would probably capture all teams with winning record or at least .500 record, then this bracket below is what it would look like.

In 6A, this could almost work. But any other class the geography of just straight 1-16 is impossible. 2A would have OCath hosting Phelps. A 5 hour cheese ride.

Could tweak it and separate East and West teams so each side would be seaded 1 through 8. Do that now with round 3.

Players and coaches at these schools don't like this idea at all:

Henderson County 4-6

Daviess County 5-5

Fern Creek 4-6

Lafayette 5-5

George Rogers Clark 5-5

There are other teams in the 16 team playoff with records of 5-5 and 4-6.

200+ kids who don't get an opportunity in the playoffs.

We are going to use RPI which we all say is flawed and knock these kids out of the playoffs?

Why? Because we are trying to fix some problem, which I still am not sure what the problem is.

Let's say we use the top 2 teams in the district method, which I have seen advocated. In that case you have Meade County 2-8, Ballard 4-6 and two 5-5 teams in the post season. Meanwhile Bryan Station who has been in the 6A top 10 all year doesn't get in. Oldham County at 6-4 and #11 in RPI is not in.

There will be more people complaining about the inequity and flawed system in these playoff proposals than the current one, and they will have legitimate complaints. Kids eliminated from the playoffs because the adults are trying to stop some lopsided games, or trying to recapture their past from 30 years ago,  or .... whatever, who knows why.

What he said.  Oh and there will STILL be lopsided playoff games.

Here are teams denied a playoff game using the top 2 in the district as the qualifier:

1A

Bethlehem

Louisville Holy Cross (in the top 10 all season)

Bellevue

Nicholas County (8-2)

2A

Caldwell County 6-4

Green County 7-3

Knott County Central 7-2

3A

DeSales 5-5

Bardstown 7-3

4A

Franklin-Simpson 6-4

Marion County 7-3

Taylor County 7-3

Boyd County 6-4

5A

Madisonville North-Hopkins 8-2

Collins 7-3

South Oldham 5-5

South Laurel 8-2

6A

See above

I'm not a fan of RPI so I would use a different metric but that's what KHSAA uses. If you want in the playoff then have a better regular season. It should be a big deal that you made the playoff. Right now if make playoff it's no big deal because almost everyone gets in. Would also make the regular season mean more.

The problem is too many teams in the post season. The problem is 0 win teams in the playoffs. The problem is also 1, 2 and 3 win teams in the playoffs.   If there wasn't a problem teams wouldn't be dropping out of the playoffs.

If you want every team to make the post season like every other sport, then just do that.  Football is supposed to be different and special.  Right now, the regular season means jack squat of nothing for 90% of teams.  Win a district game and you are in, unless you are in a 4 team district, then you don't have to win anything.

I still don’t see what the problem is though. I know a few teams have dropped out but this mountain of a problem really seems like a molehill.
