While I agree that no one gets left out, sometimes being left out teaches a lesson that inclusion can’t.

While I agree you can learn lessons from football (or really any other competitive activity), not every single element is or needs to be about "teaching a life lesson". Nobody signs up for sports for life lessons. It's really ok for somebody to play sports just to have fun. No one's life has ever taken a turn for the worse because they got to play in the playoffs after a 1-9 season. Not everything needs to be justified by attaching life lessons to every aspect of that activity.

Is that the only value? Only 6 teams get any value out of the postseason?

I didn't say nobody else got value from the post season, I said the point is to find the best overall in each division.

And the garbage teams, don't get any value, nor do the blue bloods that wipe the floor with them either.

If there was value in getting your teeth smashed in for an 11th game, nobody would drop out.

For what it's worth, I don't believe anyone opted out of Ohio's playoffs.

Because it's not a watered down tournament where almost everyone gets in.

Ohio has 100 more teams in their playoffs than KY.

Value isn't all about the win or even the score.

Ohio certainly does have over 100 more teams in the playoffs.  But well under 50% of Ohio teams make the playoffs.

And I couldn't agree more about value being about winning or the score. Which is why currently there is little to no value in KY's playoff system.

As I said, let everyone in, or make it a system actually based on merit. I don't care either way, but the current system is indeed broken.

If you drop out of the playoffs then you should not be able to compete in them the following year.

The easiest fix is to allow top two from each district in. That would alleviate the strain on officials and eliminate some of the major blowouts from happening. Seed the tournament by RPI 1 through 16 or 1-8 based on region and finish it on Thanksgiving weekend. If you want to keep the dates the same, do away with week zero and have an idle week before the tournament starts. This would allow every team a week to get healthy.

Allow the teams that do not make it to play in one post season "scrimmage." It would be at the coach's discretion on the format.  That would create a great opportunity for the young guys to get some minutes and give your seniors if they desire one last time to compete in a more competitive setting. Maybe even a Jamboree. It could turn into a nice recruiting deal for some kids at the smaller schools. I am sure that there would be a lot smaller colleges interested in coming out to see that.

The kids who really being done the disservice are the one's that are getting cheated a game because their opponent is dropping out of the playoffs. Not the kid or team  who is avoiding a running clock.

There is zero value in the playoffs when teams with zero wins are allowed in.

Quite literally, there is no value to the regular season.

I have no dog in the fight, nor a strong opinion one way or the other on this issue, but this makes the most sense to me.  If you can't win a single game in the regular season, why should you be in the postseason?  Just because you have a pulse and put on pads every Friday?

Apparently because their little feelings will be hurt if they don't get that 10th or 11th loss of the season.

Is the same hatred there for all the other sports that includes all teams into the postseason, or just football?

I think the first round butt kicking discourage kids from playing the next year. It hurts football. A kids last memory of the season  is driving home from getting destroyed.
no one benefits from an  uncompetitive game where kids get embarrassed and hurt.

I would just send top two teams in a district to regional basketball tournament.

In Basketball you have more 3 seeds and 4 seeds that upset #1 & #2 seeds than you ever have in Football, for that very reason I would not send just your top 2 seeds. But in Basketball, some regions are doing the "super region" where every team in the region makes the regional tournament, and they do away with the district tournament.

I definitely like the move to super regionals and going away from districts.

The question I have, and will continue to wonder.

Does the KHSAA have a problem with how things are going? We all can complain on message boards and Facebook until we're blue in the face, but do Julian and the gang want to see change in the playoff setup?
