I'd argue that I'd be fine with excluding because they should've taken care of business in their district so that they aren't a #4 seed.  I just think the regular season needs more prioritization, especially if we're going to keep this district system, which I believe is becoming more archaic by the year anyway.

The regular season is highly prioritized. It sets the stage for your chances in the post season through district seeds and RPI.

The other thing is some districts are much stronger than others. In 6A District 2, Meade Co. is the #2 seed with a 2-8 record. In 6A District 1 McCracken County is 5-5 and is the #1 seed. In 6A District 7 Tates Creek is the #1 seed with a 4-6 record. Twenty of the 32 teams in 6A have a better RPI than Tates Creek yet they are one of 8 #1 seeds.

I can not believe there's a 14 page thread arguing for less high school football games. Well, I can believe it sadly but my goodness. Bunch of whiny adults upset they gotta watch their elite blue-blood school running clock somebody in the first round, just like they do for most of their games. Not every school's goal is to win a state title every year.

Then those teams can play in their own “for fun” tournament…

It absolutely is not if you let winless teams in.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about this topic during the week and below is my proposal. This system maintains the integrity of district plays and rewards district championships. It also doesn't punish teams for being in a tougher district or reward teams who are in an easier district. It eliminates the worst of teams and their seemingly meaningless first round games. It also eliminates repeat playoff games where teams in opposite districts have to play each other almost every year.

PROPOSAL:

  • 24 teams per class make the playoffs.
  • Each class would still have 8 districts and each district winner would receive a first round bye.
  • The remaining 16 spots are determined by the RPI. There could be some 4th place teams in districts that qualify and some runners-up that don't. This is about adding the best teams.
  • Using Class 3A in the chart below, the "western" district winners are in yellow, the "eastern" district winners are in green.

  • District winners are seeded 1-4 in their respective sides of the bracket and receive a first round bye. This year's bracket would look like the following based on district winners:

  • Following the placement of district winners, you then place the remaining teams in the bracket based on location and seed. The 12 best non-district winning "western" teams from Districts 1-4 would go on the left side, with the best team playing the worst and so on. The same would be done on the east. If there was a situation where there were more or less than the 8 teams in a grouping of districts, you'd move the easternmost team to the west, or vice versa.
  • The bracket below shows what it would look like (**Notice that Henry County, although District 5, is moved into the west because of the need of an 8th team). The better seed would host the first round, then the team with the bye would host the second round.

  • Following the completion of the second round, you would have 8 teams remaining.
  • Using the same procedure as today, the four remaining "western" teams would be paired by RPI and the same done on the eastern side.
  • For the semifinals, you would use the RPI to pair the #1 and #4 teams, and #2 and #3.
  • Winners play in the finals.

This is very well thought out and I think very practical. I think there will be some Male/Highlands/Mayfield fans who love their national win totals who have enjoyed that round and hate to lose a game. I like taking the top 16 left, I am not sure about the East/West moving over I would just take the top 8 at still at large in the east and west and go from there. Very Impressive.
