CCH would go on to beat Highlands again that year and win state for the first time since 1997.

Cov Cath was supposed to be one of best teams in KY regardless of class. They had a really good QB, Hlad I think was the name. Cov Cath blasted Highlands in the regular season game like 45-6. Then the playoff game in Park Hills was a downpour and the field was slop. I believe Highlands won 7-6 or something with the key play being a kick return by now Highlands coach Mike Welch. I still can’t understand how Cov Cath didn’t win state in 92. Cov Cath was loaded that year. I know Highlands was good but I didn’t think they would beat Cov Cath. They have to be one of the best teams not to win state in any class.

Played football at Princeton as well. Adam McCormack was the QB on the '92 team that was expected to win state. They beat Highlands 41-21 in the regular season, but lost the playoff rematch in a muddy 14-7 loss in Park Hills. McCormack had 7 of the school's QB records when he graduated and went to Morehead State on a football scholarship, then Morehead shelved their football program while he was there, so he transferred to Miami Oxford for football. Hladon and McCormack are both in the CCH Hall of Fame, and Adam's son Liam is a WR/DB at Beechwood right now. I've talked to Coach Bob Noll about the Highlands game in '92 a few times. He and Coach Tim Hobbs shared offensive play calling duties in those days. Coach Noll told me, "We [the coaches] lost that game. We just didn't plan for the rain. We came in trying to pass all day because that's what we did, and the game was just too wet for us to do that." That’s like the 1997 Highlands team, they were crazy good too. Kuhnhein, Stegman, Schear, Lindeman, Pogue, Stinson. And Lorenzen, Smith, Gibson, Ulbricht as juniors. 92 was reversed mud bowl. TEDFROMVILLAHILLS
1982!!! Reg season Highlands on top with a 13-7 victory. Playoffs again saw Highlands on top 13-7 in Overtime. Johnny Bankemper went over the top to score winning TD in front of arguably largest crowd in DCM stadium. Also arguably best CCH team not to win state. Schulte twins, Darpel at QB, Edgington and Hennessy in the backfield, Big Tobler on the line, and on and on! Highlands had Kremer at QB, Bankemper in the backfield, a smallish Oline but very very disciplined, and a defense with Kremer, Dougherty, Ulbricht, Fisher, Maile and company, that only allowed less than 5 points a game with 6/7 shutouts. When Bankemper scored winning TD, Tood Schulte welcomed him into the end zone. At that point 1000’s of fans rushed the field. Watching the tape, it’s really an exciting and well played game. We were at Wooten field at like 7:30 or 8 in the morning putting saw-dust down to try and soak up some of the massive puddles that had formed all over at CovCath. If I remember, Highlands even showed up with massive mats or tarps to roll out on their sideline to try and keep mud to a minimum.
35Bird
In my view, as great as that 1982 team was, one of its overlooked contributions was the beginning of the transition to CCH as our biggest rival.

What day you JOAT? Agree 100% except for a few things. Let’s not forget Abner, Dierig, Cottingham, Spritzky, Barth, Beagle and Herrmann. Nastiest group to ever walk on the field IMO. Took points, first downs and yards gained personally like I have never seen since. Skip Hicks was mastermind of the defense and Bill Herrmann just let guys play.

Adam was QB from '90-'92.

I've heard several folks who have watched a lot more Cov Cath football than I have who have said the same thing about the '82 team. The Mt. Rushmore of best Cov Cath football teams not to win state are 1969, 1982, 1992, and 2018. In 1969 Cov Cath handled Highlands 35-6 and were 8-2 in the regular season but didn't get a shot at the playoffs because most of the NKY public schools had boycotted scheduling Cov Cath as a private school and the lack of district competition prevented Cov Cath from getting into the playoffs in those days. They had Rick Hornsby (Louisville), Rick Fedders (Marshall), Mike Setters (Eastern Kentucky), Tom Thoss (Austin Peay), and Bill Topmiller (Vanderbilt) all on that team, in addition to Keith Stowers who had offers from Marshall and Morehead State and was expecting offers from several other schools at the time of his death, prior to graduation from Cov Cath.
