What If Trump Actually Governs..................

Recommended Posts

...........More to the Middle????

I must admit I'm thoroughly enjoying the apoplectic & apocalyptic response of the left & left-stream media (I refuse to use the term "mainstream" any longer after they've so emphatically shown their spots during the election and aftermath). I'm especially getting a kick out of the insane overreaction to each comment, team member suggestion, etc. that PE Trump makes as he sits less than two weeks after his election; and nearly two months away from even taking office--The criticism is totally unprecedented from my observations?

My question however is, what if Trump actually governs (once he actually starts the process) as it appears he might--Building some consensus and even maybe looking for common ground with his political opponents? He's already in two weeks reached out more than Obama did in 8 years; and seems like he may actually consider alternate opinions, despite the campaign rhetoric? Will the media and the left (one in the same) give him a chance to actually make a decision or act on something, before they declare the latest "end of mankind" scenario they've presented so far? Thoughts??

It would be a blessing. I would much rather see him govern more to the middle as he appears to be doing than fighting with SNL and the cast of Hamilton.

My sentiments exactly. My hope is that President Trump is different from campaign Trump.

What does "center" mean as far as campaign pledges?

Build a wall?

Muslim registration?

Deficit increase?

Go against VP Pence's stance on gays?

What about making sure everyone is covered with health insurance?

Will he no longer play to the fear of darker skin?

What about the people he surrounds himself with? Thus far, I'd argue they're not centrists.

If he goes center on those types of issues you have to ask if the voters that got him over the hump will stick with him.

Then you have to ask if he can get support from the Rs in Congress. Deficit reduction is a huge deal to Rs. Is Mr Trump going to get them to implement a huge tax cut or a huge infrastructure plan that will greatly increase the deficit? He may WANT to go center on some things but find obstacles in his party.

It's going to be a very interesting scenario.

My point in starting this was......Let's give the guy a chance to see how he intends to govern. At this point most President elect's haven't named a sole to their Cabinet, or done much of anything except relax after a long & grueling campaign.

The left has vilified him as "unprepared" because he hasn't completed appointing about 4500 staff members yet--Amazing!! Personally I'd call him reckless and shallow if he didn't spend some time mulling over his staff appointments!

This guy can't do anything right so far, and he's months from taking office? He even got grief for taking his wife to dinner. Time to lighten up a bit, and let's see what he does? Agree with Clyde, "It's going to be a very interesting scenario."

After meeting with Mr Trump the NYT said they were surprised at how little depth of knowledge he has on a variety of subjects.

That is probably true. I'd also bet that he doesn't know how to design a building, pour concrete, install glass, electric or plumbing and there is no way he knows how to make Towel Swans the maids leave in your room in some of his hotels either...yet somehow he has surrounded himself with people that did know how to do all of those things.

In Truth most Great Leaders (not calling Trump one) are more Generalist than Specialist. I worked for some great (and not so great) leaders at Walmart, very very few of them had the specific knowledge to operate a modern store on a day to day basis...but that didn't mean Sam Walton, David Glass and Lee Scott weren't great corporate leaders for Walmart.

We will see how this turns out for President Trump...

That is baloney. The only surprise would have been if did have an immense depth of knowledge on a variety of subjects.

FWIW, I hope he does. There seems to be some unique areas of common ground he has with Democrats, and I hope he pursues working with them on it. I hope he tries to be a president for everyone and not just the core supporters who lifted him over the hump.

To some extent, his speech on YouTube yesterday and his interview with the NYT exhibited some moderation by walking back some of his more extreme claims (or at least omitted them). So, that's cause for optimism.

On the other hand, some of his appointments so far seem to affirm the ethnonationalism that undergirded his campaign. I'm afraid if his administration is hit by scandal or his popularity dips he'll attempt to whip-up nationalist fervor. It seems to me Bannon's appointment only makes sense in this light. Sessions, Flynn, Kobach seem unified by this theme as well.

I'm cautiously optimistic he'll be better than expected. I hope he is. But, I'm not going to sit on my hands and zip my lips if he proposes things I find repugnant or ignorant.
