Cardinals extend streak

to seven over Tilghman

BY JOEY FOSKO

MAYFIELD — He’s an allstater,

and he’ll likely leave Mayfi

eld’s storied football program

as its all-time leading rusher and

tackler.

Senior linebacker and running

back Jonathan Jackson piled

on one more career accolade in

the Cardinals’ 42-21 victory over

Paducah Tilghman at War Memorial

Stadium in Friday night’s

99th installment of a rivalry that

was christened in 1911.

He is believed to be the only

Cardinal that has started for four

Mayfi eld teams that beat Tilghman,

with this one extending the

Mayfi eld winning streak to seven

— a fi rst for either program.

“I can’t think of anyone else

that could’ve done that,” Mayfi

eld coach Joe Morris said. “We

haven’t had too many classes

come through here that could say

they beat Tilghman every year,

and we don’t have many freshmen

start here. When you have

a kid like that on your team, you

look like a good coach.”

Jackson ran for 138 yards and

three touchdowns and scored a

fourth on a pass reception early in

the third quarter. Appropriately,

it was the latter that epitomized

his hard-charging style and gave

the Cardinals (2-1 and ranked

No. 1 in Class A by the Associated

Press) a 28-14 lead and some

badly needed breathing room.

Catching a swing pass from

quarterback Jake Guhy, Jackson rolled his way through a

Tornado secondary that

looked like it wanted no

part of him.

“Jake led me with the

pass, so I had to run and

get it and I had a running

start,” Jackson said. “I had

the momentum with me,

and I broke a couple of

tackles and got into the end

zone.”

Mayfi eld also got a command

performance from

senior Jordan Brown, a receiver

and cornerback who

had a monster fi rst half

while leading the Cardinals

to a 21-14 lead at the break.

He caught fi ve passes for

116 yards and one score,

including a diving catch on

a third-down play that got

Mayfi eld out of the shadow

of its end zone and led to a

Jackson run that broke a

14-14 tie in the last minute

of the second quarter.

Brown also had an interception,

one of three

on Tilghman quarterback

Jordan Tyler, that set up

a Mayfi eld score midway

through the fi rst quarter.

Tilghman (2-1 and

ranked third in Class 3A)

was able to take advantage

of Mayfi eld’s small, inexperienced

secondary at times

— Tyler completed just 13

of 31 passes, but they went

for 255 yards, nearly 20

yards a catch.

Olajuwon Harmon

scored all three of Tilghman’s

touchdowns, two

on pass receptions and another

one on an 80-yard

return of a fumble that tied

the score at 14-14 early in

the second period.

“We felt like we could

throw the ball against

them, and we did a good

job of taking advantage

of our height,” Tilghman

coach Randy Wyatt said.

“When they got the (twotouchdown)

lead, we pretty

much had to throw and

they could pin their ears

back and really come after

us.

“The one thing we didn’t

do as well as we should is

run the ball. I thought we

could do a better job of

that.”

Tilghman managed just

55 yards on the ground, all

but abandoning the running

game in the second

half. Some of that is a tribute

to Jackson, who has

made life tough for opposing

running backs for four

seasons.

“The guy’s got heart,

more than his size would

show,” said Wyatt, who

played collegiately at Louisville

and Kentucky. “If I’m a

Division I coach, I’m taking

a chance on that guy. He’s

defi nitely got what it takes.”

Looking at this score makes me think Warren Central is very good.

Warren Central is a Very good team!

Having said that, MHS was actually leading that game at half. Warren Cental eventually wore the Cards down, and with Jackson playing very little in Second half the cards just ran out of gas, and yet made a valiant comeback at the end.

Big win for the Cards.

Looks like Mayfield and Hazard in a rematch for the 1A title.

That is what all of Mayfield is wanting.

A chance at Redemption

If not I hope Race can make it there as they have never done such and it would be fun on here to watch the sometimes over zealous Race fans go crazy with excitement

A couple of things I heard from PT that I got a kick out of:

I guarantee you some of Mayfield's defensive line was outweighed 75 pounds a man or more. Didn't seem to matter.

When Jackson runs the ball, he runs with extreme aggression like he is mad

Maybe it's just me, but, in these last 7 years during the Mayfield winning streak, I'd say maybe only a couple of those years did Mayfield have the more talented players. To that end, it just appears Morris and the rest of the Cardinal staff, just coaches circles around Wyatt and staff. They always seem to be more fundamentally sound in blocking, tackling, special teams, kicking, etc.. I think if you took the players and swapped uniforms, but, kept the staffs in place, you could very well be looking at a 7 game winning streak with the PT players.

I think they have a history of doing more with less. Look at the Bw game last year for anothe great example.
