Covington Catholic makes case for best Northern Kentucky football team ever - Insider - Story

PARK HILLS, Ky.– AJ Mayer dropped back, surveyed the field and saw nothing but green in front of him.

He tucked the ball and took off, all the way to the left hash before cutting back across the field and following his blockers the opposite way, back to the side he’d come from. The 6-3, 205-pound senior quarterback finished the 33-yard run by stretching for the right pylon to score a touchdown.

It was the second play of the game. With 23 seconds gone, Covington Catholic led Bullitt Central 7-0 Friday night in the second round of the 5-A state playoffs. By the end of the first quarter, it was an unfathomable 42-0.

“This just isn't fair,” said Covington Catholic radio color man Kevin Connor.

The clock was running – just as it has in every game against a Kentucky foe this season.

And the debate began, or rather, continued. Because people have whispered it all season.

Is this year's CovCath squad the best football team in school history? Is it the best in Northern Kentucky history?

“I think it’s the best team CovCath has ever had,” said 67-year-old Dennis Reibling, proud member of the class of ‘68. “The offense is just awesome, which means the defense isn’t on the field very much. I’m very impressed.”

Fans will point out the current squad could have up to seven Division I recruits, including (but not limited to):

-AJ Mayer, the senior quarterback

-Kam Butler, a 6-4, 245-pound senior tight end/linebacker

-Jack Coldiron, a 6-5, 210-pound junior wide receiver/linebacker

-Michael Mayer, a 6-5, 210-pound sophomore tight end/defensive lineman (and AJ’s brother)

-Grant Dyer, a 6-2, 215-pound senior linebacker/running back

-Lucas Jones, a 6-3, 255-pound sophomore offensive lineman/defensive lineman

-Malachi Pike, a 6-2, 190-pound senior wide receiver/defensive back

“They’re the best in school history,” says Nate Thamann, who played from 1996-98 and now serves on the Colonels’ game crew. “The only argument you’re going to find is from past state title winners.”

Which brings up an interesting point: Can a team be the best ever if it doesn't win a state title? Some say this Colonel squad has as much talent as the Highlands teams of the late 1990s that featured Jared Lorenzen throwing to Derek Smith.

But those Bluebirds went 15-0 and won a state championship when Lorenzen was a senior.

“That’s what you have to do to be considered the best of all-time,” says CovCath play-by-play man Mark Wehry. “So it’s too soon to tell just yet.”

But there are other arguments to be made.

Consider this:

-The Colonels have a 1,200-yard rusher in junior running back Casey McGinness.

-Their first-team defense has given up one touchdown to Kentucky opponents all season – and it was the first play of the season – a screen pass against Ryle.

-Their freshman kicker, Trey Gronotte, had never played football in his life, and coming into the second round of the playoffs, was 59 of 62 on extra points this year – and he kicked 7-for-7 in the first quarter Friday.

That first quarter may have been the Colonels’ most impressive performance of the season.

In below-freezing weather, the Colonels surprised Bullitt Central with an onside kick to start the game and it was all downhill from there. With less than three minutes gone, it was 14-0. Two minutes later, it was 21-0.

By halftime it was 49-0, and Bullitt Central – a team that finished 8-4 – had no first downs as the Colonel second team was coming in. CovCath held Bullitt Central to just 34 yards of offense in the first half.

In a complete domination, the Colonels weren’t asked to do very much. AJ Mayer completed just 3 of 5 passes for 47 yards with two touchdowns in the first half. McGinness rushed seven times for 60 yards and three touchdowns.

The running clock for three quarters kept the score the same until the end. The Colonels won 49-0, and the game lasted just over 90 minutes.

CovCath, now 12-0, will travel next week to South Oldham, 10-1, whch made a furious comeback to defeat Highlands 35-34 Friday night. The game will be at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 17.

For the Colonels, the path to greatness is clear.

“We’re still hungry – we know that we haven’t accomplished anything yet,” head coach Eddie Eviston said after the game. “We know we can do more to improve. From day one, we’ve been working all through the summer and fall and every kid in our program knows to respect every opponent. All that comes into play and if we have to travel for our next game, we’ll do it.”

And they’ll be one step closer to what everyone seems to think.

While this a is really strong team I think the level of competition is less than it was in past decades. I'm not sure if they're the best Covington Catholic team but they are in the discussion.

Let's pump the brakes a bit and revisit this discussion if CovCath is standing victorious on the turf at Kroger Field in a few weeks.

I wasn't necessarily talking to you with my above post. I don't have an issue with you sharing that article. It might stir up some good conversation. My issue is with the existence of this article in the first place. There's no harm in waiting until after the season to pose this question. This writer has jumped the gun a little, IMO.

I knew you weren’t and I am 100% with ya. The boys know they play this Friday at South Oldham and that is the only thing on their mind.

The argument for best program in school history is certainly there.

I don't know that it's easy to even begin to support the claim that it's the best program in NKY history. There have been too many variables over the course of the 100+ years of NKY football to really even substantiate that argument being made.

Way early and so endemic to society today. Instant “greatest team ever”. No thanks.

That 97 Birds team had high major/SEC/NFL talent. And I don’t think that was even the best HHS team.

Cov Cath is having a great year. But this talk is bordering on obnoxious.

OK, I was playing along with the hype till we got to the bit about the freshman kicker.

I am with CWB and DMC. Certainly in the discussion for greatest in CCH history. After they win the state title, we can entertain comparisons with the many, many other great teams in N. Ky. history. It will be a good post season / off season discussion.

I still say the '82 CCH squad was an awefully good team. But this years team is crazy good for sure.

Let's see if they win state first.

No way they're the best team ever to play in Northern Kentucky

I am just asking because I have no idea. My question to the CCH experts on BGP, how many guys on this CCH team will play D-I college football? I am not saying that is the most important thing to be a great team but am just curious...I know the article mentions up to 7. Is that optimistic? Or realistic?

I would like for this team to have faced one of the great Bowling Green teams from the past 4 or 5 years.
