  1. I don't think for Coach Glaser it is about keeping it in the family. He focuses on finding men who know the game, have great character, and most of all are great people. I believe one of his strongest attributes is the molding of his staff. He has the ability to bring together a very wide variety of backgrounds and experiences and to get the most out of them year in and year out. He gives each coach control of his position while guiding them. In regards to the "home-grown" coaches, I think there is a climate on the staff at X that molds all of the coaches together and they all leave there feeling "home grown".
  2. Suppose he left today.. What type of applicant pool would they get?? Coaching positions are very dependent on TIMING and FIT between the school and coach. My argument is that if a HC leaves his job in April or May he really forces a school to hire from within or get a lesser quality new coach due to the poor timing.
  3. GREAT to hear! Fine young man and a wonderful family.
  4. I think there is an appropriate time of year to test the waters and talk to other schools with no harm being done. IMO, once you get past spring ball you jeopardize the kids in your current program by looking for another post. But, as these late in the game hirings continue, there will always be a snowball effect and there are definitely programs that lose as a result.
  5. Not exactly. Coach Glaser probably has hired more varsity coaches from outside his staff rather from within the past 15-20 years. Here is a list of a few. I am sure there are some more . . Terry Bean - Oldham Jim Wagner - Oldham Rick Sorrells - Oldham Lonnie Oldham - From a small college?? Rob Willman - Hanover Willie Foster - Bullitt East Pat Chitwood - Elizabethtown Frank Espinosa - DeSales Ken Wade - CSAA team??? Bart Bruner - Southern The only frosh coaches who have bumped up have been Jay Stalberg (sp??) and Troy Johnson.
  6. And they (Male) are the ONLY public school within that time that has had a smell. Open enrollment really only applies to 3-4 schools. Male does not have a resides area. There is no section in Jefferson County that is Male's district they accept every student based on a given criteria. Therefore, one could argue that Male has VERY similar advantages to the private schools. There will not be one student asked to leave another school and forced to return to his / her home school of Male. (This is also the case at Manual and Butler) And as long a 3-4 schools are allowed to take their cream off the top they will have a more elite base of alumni to donate to their facilities plans.
  7. What is Pat Chitwood going to coach?? I know he has been doing the OL.
  8. Let me preface this post: **I know nothing personally about this coach or situation but it does open a can of worms.** When a staff attends Tony's clinic they recieve the entire clinic on DVD, teaching tapes, playbook, practice schedules, etc. You can order these materials, but Tony still charges the full price. Would it only seem fair that those materials stay in the hands of the group that funded them?? Therefore, if a booster club were to pay a large amount (2000.00 in this case) do they have a right to protect their interest and investment and make sure that these coaching resources remain with their program and are available to the new coach and staff?? Or do they go with the old coach??
  9. The reality for why Trinity and St. X do so well without spring ball is the fact that they get a huge benefit from being a true "platoon" system from day the a player begins his freshmen season. There are a few varsity programs who platoon their varisty kids exclusively, but still can't do this full scale at the Frosh and JV levels. With Trinity and St. X's numbers they can do this the entire 4 years. If you were to track the number of reps a Trinity or St. X player gets at his position I would bet it would be more than double the reps of a young man who plays in an iron man or "semi" iron man system. Spring ball is essentially about reps and improving technique. Some programs even use it to give "tryouts" for position changes and younger players moving into varsity roles. I feel the kids and St. X and Trinity would love the opportunity to practice in the spring. **And trust me, the are PLENTY of skilled kids available in the spring at St. X right now.
  10. The guys who have attended Tony's "The System" clinics are all closely connected. I wouldn't be surprised if the connection isn't from the clinics. Best of luck to Coach, he did a great job there. Also, best of luck to players and South community. I am sure things will work out for the best and the administration will make a move real soon. The posts about spring ball sounded as if things were going pretty well.
  11. The big thing in this district is to avoid the 4th seed. That seed will play the #1 seed from the opposite district, which will end up being John Hardin. If a team can avoid them, they have a good shot and making a run into the 2nd and 3rd round. And as PRP, Male, and St. X found out last year, those guys can flat play. I would say. 1 - X 2 - Manual 3 - PRP 4 - H 5 - Butler **I don't envy any of those teams. Man that is one TOUGH district!!
  12. Coach J Do you guys utilize a "platform" area or do you even use these racks for those lifts as well?? Great looking and mostly EFFICIENT room!! Keep up the good work.
  13. Being the best doesn't have to measured by wins and loses or with state titles. My question would be which one of these schools makes the most of what they have and their situation? IMO, that is a best indicator of "success".
  14. Is he going to Hoover or Pelham?? I know that both of those schools have ties to the offensive system that he ran at South.
  15. Are there any assistants on the staff that are ready to take a program over?? It is very late in year for a HC search. It would seem that the best move, if possible, would be to hire someone from within. . .
  16. I can tell you from experience that you need to find a situation where the Head Coach places high value on teaching his assistants the " right way" to coach. Of course there is no set "right way", but you must find a situation were there is heavy emphasis placed on the process, where each coach has meaningful input, and where you can learn. There are situations that you may get into that you may win a lot of games, but will not be learning a much in terms of schemes, how to prepare a game plan effectively, coaching a particular side of the ball or position, or running a program (However, I will say that most teams that are winning games are not doing so by going through the motions.) You will be simply put into their way of doing things and not brought up to speed on the why's or the how's. I also recommend doing anything you can do to be involved. Get in the weight room, attend any clinic you can, meet with coaches, be willing to paint/clean/etc., and while doing this ASK what you don't know or might be unsure about. In terms of finding a position most HS coaches utlize the KHSAA's site or the coaches listserv to advertise jobs. I don't know that there is a coach out there that wouldn't meet with you if you were to inquire. Once you meet with a few coaches, trust me, it will be clear what situation will be the best in terms of learning and growing. Coaching football is a lifestyle. Find a role model who does things right, can have fun while doing it, is ultimately concerned first with doing things the right way for the kids, and has his prorities in place. Best of luck!!
  17. Was it South Laurel that started a Freshman QB?? Do they run the Tony Franklin system? How did their offense look?
  18. St. X as well as many other schools choose not to participate due to the format. Most programs have dropped the "powerlifting" emphasis for more Olympic based or explosive lifts like Bench, Power Clean, and Parallel Squat. The state meet still has bench and dead lift. MANY schools disagree with the fact that the dead lift is included and also that lifters are allowed to use the straddle technique. Most coaches perceive the straddle technique strictly as a method to increase poundage and not strength or power. It also breaks the "athletic position" that is a focus when the goal is sport specific strength. FYI - St.X's powerlifting team does utilize the "Sumo" technique, which to some S & C guru's is equally as controversial as the straddle. And I heard from a St. X Asst coach that there are more football players than ever on the St. X powerlifting team.
  19. Facts. Per St. X's website. They have 10 paid Varisty coaches and 8 paid Freshmen coaches. (Trinity's site did not have coaches listed or pictured) JCPS pays 4 Varsity coaches. (Head Coach and ONLY 3 Asst's) And 2 Freshmen coaches. I don't claim to be a math guy, but those don't seem to be anywhere close to equal.
  20. I didn't call it hopeless. It is a brutal truth that I believe will happen and the schools currently in AAAA and the new AAAAAA have to come to terms with. Between the two schools they have won that last 5 AAAA titles and have benefited greatly from the momentum. IMO, they both now have situations that I don't see anyone being able to compete with. Note, I did say that there will be an occasional scare. I did fail to reply to the original thread. With what X returns, they would have to be the pre-season favorite.
  21. This thread feels like the movie Groundhog day. . . :creepy: The brutal truth is that St. X or Trinity will win at least the next 4 state finals. This will be in AAAA or the new AAAAAA. With their upgrades in facilities that cannot and will not have any chance of being duplicated at a public school, their head football coaches heavy involvement in "admissions" (legal term for recruiting), and the major differences in coaching staff positions. I don't see anyone outside of Male or maybe a Manual, who might even give them a run. There will be an occasional scare (i.e. John Hardin), but Coach Brown himself said that teams like that at MOST schools come around every 10 to 15 years.
  22. Well put. . . Basketball does not benefit a much from numbers as it does from individual talents. The larger private schools get their biggest benefit from numbers in football and the "meet" (swimming, track, cross country) sports where every point counts.
  23. You obviously don't know many high school coaches around the state. So your telling us that if a school with 25 kids had a hard working coaching staff, then they could compete with anyone?? Would the fact that some private schools fund the hiring of 16 plus coaches and other public districts are paying 3 or fewer have any impact??? Give some examples of off-season programs that you have seen. You don't even have to name them, just state what sets them apart from others? What is the "proper" way to use spring practice?? I have seen some GREAT off-season programs in public schools. Back to Guru's question: The bottom line is football is THE ultimate team game. It takes numbers, chemistry, strength, conditioning, preparation, ability to stay healthy, soundness in all three phases, and some LUCK!! Basketball requires a much smaller number of individual athletes. You can have 2-3 great athletes in basketball and get a long ride in district and regional play. 2-3 great athletes in football mean nothing without O and D Lines, ability to tackle, play special teams, etc.
