I know Dixie doesn't do it cause so many kids play multiple sports and also have jobs at that time of the year. I would assume that they have the same situation.

This is the same reason we do not do this at X. We have a great number of football players who also compete in baseball, track, tennis, and lacrosse. We try to remember that this is just high school, and not college. These young men can benefit greatly from diversified Xperiences at this age.

I still think teams are missing out. You should play the game with who you have available because you gain experience and you never know who you might discover.

You bring up a good point, but in our case we would be having a spring game with all linemen, except those who are shot putters, discus throwers, baseball catchers or 1st basemen, and lacrosse goalies. Almost all the skill people compete in spring sports. You really don't learn a lot when you play people completely out of position.

Ox, as you posted on another thread "I am a Missourian". I will have to be shown the facts to believe your statement that "almost all" of the skill kids compete in spring sports. A good number do this at Trinity as well but they were always able to have a solid spring football program. Heck both teams have a ton of returning JV and varsity players plus frosh. I would tend to agree with the current coaching staff that it serves little purpose but it is quite "do-able". As a fan, I miss the days of spring ball and a Green/White scrimmage. But winning four out of five titles without it proves it isn't really needed.

The reality for why Trinity and St. X do so well without spring ball is the fact that they get a huge benefit from being a true "platoon" system from day the a player begins his freshmen season. There are a few varsity programs who platoon their varisty kids exclusively, but still can't do this full scale at the Frosh and JV levels. With Trinity and St. X's numbers they can do this the entire 4 years.

If you were to track the number of reps a Trinity or St. X player gets at his position I would bet it would be more than double the reps of a young man who plays in an iron man or "semi" iron man system.

Spring ball is essentially about reps and improving technique. Some programs even use it to give "tryouts" for position changes and younger players moving into varsity roles.

I feel the kids and St. X and Trinity would love the opportunity to practice in the spring.

**And trust me, the are PLENTY of skilled kids available in the spring at St. X right now.

Their double sessions make up for the reps that the schools get in their 10 spring practices. They will start Passing league prep stuff now though.

One reason Trinity improved last season is some players starting playing both ways, which earned them a State Championship!

If there are plenty of skilled athletes, then maybe they should be fine-tuning their passing game.

Since you always seem to profess so much knowledge about the inner workings of St. X. at all levels in all sports  , I'm sure you will have no problem in traveling to saintx.com and perusing the Track and Baseball rosters at all levels. You will find many familiar names such as Zoeller, Anderson, Finch, Meyer, Merimee, Simmons...and on-and-on. This would be a good investigative exercize, and I know how much you like to dig into things. :D

Anderson? Wow, what other sport is Vic playing? I seem to remember being roundly thumped by the X faithful for wondering why such a speedster didn't run track last year. I'm sure, like "Charlie Weis" has stated, that X would be able to more than able to run a spring football program. I also think that you have come way off your original claim that X would have to get by with lineman only (although with all the false-starts I saw in the title game it may still be worth doing) in the spring. FYI, it was one of those lineman that actually won the baseball game for X last year. Hope to see you at Marshall for the T/X lacrosse game.

PS... You are a pretty good sleuth yourself.

I am proud to say I have never seen a lacrosse game. As far as St.X it is the lack of locker room space more than anything else, but with the opening of the new fieldhouse spring football would be possible. But like Ox referred to it would most likely be a bunch of linemen.
