Just when you think we are making progress in Football...

When I read garbage like this I fear we are in trouble, "The dominance of St. Xavier and Trinity in Class 4A football is one of the driving forces behind the public-private debate. So the board will look at altering the playoff bracket so the powers would meet earlier in the post-season, rather than in the state finals."

Louisville is the natural dividing line for east/west brackets (meaning it is the right way to break down the teams for postseason play).

The KHSAA went away from the Louisville Champs playing the At Large Champs because it always put a Louisville team in the finals. I guess the KHSAA could go back to that format. Otherwise I guess the "Louisville Champs" will meet some at large team in the semi-finals and if the KHSAA doesn't rotate semi-final regional match ups each year we are going to have the public schools crying about that one too.

Give me a break people. Public schools powers that be need to get out of KY and look at some other states to see just how good public school football can be. The mirror is a lonely place these days...

Amen. (Am I allowed to say that, or does that break some secular law?) It's a microcosm for what's wrong with American society. There's a vociferous faction that wants everyone to win and not have to work for it.

Let me say at the start that I am not for a split of public-private, but I am for 6 classes in football.

South Laurel just lost a good coach to a public HS in AL. The difference down there is that the administrative and community support for football is fantastic. No one down there is complaining about private school dominance, regardless of the classification. Most communities in KY are either unwilling, unable, or don't know how to properly support a championship-level football team. The schools that do get the support they need can compete with and (sometimes) beat the private schools in the state. Highlands, Boyle, Beechwood, Danville, etc.

However, having said all of that, there still is a big discrepancy in 1A and 4A in enrollment that needs to be addressed, and six classes would help that situation somewhat. There is no magic bullet!!

I can't speak for others outside the Jefferson County, but here most people from the public schools want a level ground. When you can get kids from 12 or 13 different counties it helps your program. And it doesn't matter how hard you practice. How would the coach from X done at Atherton or Iroquois the past 10 years? When you play against the private schools your playing against allstar teams. The stats are there for the past 30 years and do you think its going to change? Still I rather not see a change in the playoffs but something has to be done.

Let's face it the person leading the KHSAA has very limited knowledge of what's best for kids. As well as many others on the board of Controls. There is a better way than making a stupid move such as this.

No matter what you think about the public-private/open-closed enrollment issues, this is NOT the solution.

Alabama Larry,

Public schools can take anyone they want into their school so don't hand me that X and T get student-athletes from 120 counties and the public schools can't.

Remember, you can't self impose restrictions on your own school district and then complain that others won't do the same. The practice is not only stupid but it is un-American.

You hit the nail right on the head.

If Larry is in Jefferson Co., then enrollment is open. He doesn't have that crutch to fall back on...

I have friends coaching in Georgia/Mississippi/Alabama and I asked them about problems with private schools winning championships, the perception of recruiting, and about public schools. They all said it was very rare that private schools win football championships (or any championships). They said private schools were basically places for those kids to go play that couldn't cut it at public schools athletically and simply wanted to play. I think what they were getting at is what Guru was saying.....if you invest in something (facilities, coaching, support, etc.) you usually reap what you sew. I tend to agree with that, although I believe some public schools in regards to football, are so far behind they'd never catch up.

If I recall from reading your posts in the past you are a Male supporter, correct?.

Wouldn't it be a lovely thing for Bobby and the boys if they suddenly didn't have to compete against X or Trinity?

And if you eliminate X and Trinity from the equation would that suddenly and miraculously make Atherton and Iroquois competitive or would they continue to get blown out by Male as they do now?

Mike Fields does a nice job for HS sports.

But the way I read his article it lacks some clarification. I wish he would have quoted someone actually saying they were going to alter the playoff bracket BECAUSE of Trinity & St X's effect on the public/private debate. He insinuates it. Perhaps that is the extent of what he could get "on the record?"but he basically states it as FACT without substantiating it IMO. Maybe that substantiation is already quoted elsewhere that I'm just not aware of:confused:

It seems to me that the Fields article is suggesting that just changing the playoff bracket will headoff the public/private debate in some way. Do others actually think THAT will make any difference in the overall public/private debate? I'm not close to the situation but I don't really see that as having much impact.

Mike reported that "Over the next few weeks the KHSAA will crunch the numbers to see how the state's 224 football schools would be aligned into districts in five- and six-class formats and present those findings to the Board of Control in May." I wonder why isnt the 4A "possible" playoff bracket change just another segment of that report? ..because as we have discussed on here there are all kinds of various ideas for classifications and playoff scenarios - right?

Is it that Mike is just plain annoyed with the KHSAA and /or Board and/or everyone involved - similar to some BGPers? ;)

just asking, Woody Jr

I wouldn't read too much into the article. I agree Mike Fields does a really nice job but I think he was trying to report on several topics/issues from the same meeting. You guys know how meetings are sometimes, a lot of ideas come up but that doesn't mean any of it is set in stone.

None of this matters, I agree with guru that it is sad but it won't change a thing. The championship will be played a couple of weeks prior to the first weekend in December and then T or X will pummel some team from out in the state. Think back only a couple of years, T gets eliminated early and X is up something like 46-0 at half time in the final. I hope that T and X meet every year in the quarter or semi-finals and get to split the massive gate twice a year. The good news is I'll be able to get a much better parking spot at the final as the attendance will be about half what it usually is.

Note to Alabama Larry, this won't help Male at all. If you don't think you can beat X or T what difference does it make when they beat you. FYI, I don't share your dismal view of Male's future success.

OK, I'm just curious whether its really serious or something just thrown out there. :p
