Several CCH insiders are reporting Coach Rodenberg wants out.

 

I also understand Coach R applied for and did not get at least one Ohio head coaching position.

 

Why does Coach R want out?

No surprise to me. I think it can be attributed to a few things.

 

1) The lack of solid members on the committe (Clines, Guidugli, Horton) that hired him. In my opinion, the only ones on the list that had true football knowledge were Coach Ray and Doug Ramsey...and I know Rodenberg wasn't Coach Ray's choice.

 

2) From what I've heard, Rodenberg has a tendency to rub some people the wrong way. That may be totally false, but it's what I've heard and COULD contribute to him wanting out.

I believe that he considers Ohio Football the Mecca, and he thinks that coaching in KY is "below" him. Just my hunch...

 

I think he will be at CovCath this fall, and hopefully he coaches the boys up and has a great year. I'm sure that the first D-1 Ohio job he is offered will be his last day as a CCH Head Coach.

HSSB made another point that I meant to say...Ohio (Rodenberg included) does have a collective attitude that KY football doesn't deserve the time of day. You know, since McNick was such a dominant force to be reckoned with.

Why would Cov Cath ( a great football tradition ) want a coach who ( from what you guys have said ) looks down his nose at KY football ?

 

I am sure MANY Kentucky coaches would love to have the opportunity to coach at Covington Catholic. Perhaps they looked in the wrong direction when the hiring took place.

 

A good rule of thumb is to hire those people who WANT to be there and want to get better.

I am going to throw a couple things out there (for sheer sake of conversation)--nothing less/nothing more:

 

1. Following a legend (or at least a "local legend") isn't the easiest thing in the world. There has to be a few comparisons here/there.

2. Money. Now a private school may be able to supplement a coaches salary, but there has been talk in the past that suggests that Cov Cath doesn't play that way.

3. Maybe KY football ISN'T as EASY as the Coach R thought it would be. One could attribute (at least) some of the success that Cov Cath had to the change in system/philospohy. Remember--by the end of the year--some teams figured out how to stop the vaunted offensive genius.

4. To an Ohio guy--Ohio football will always be king (see the former Ludlow coach).

5. The plan could have always been to use Cov Cath as a stepping stone to a bigger/better job.

6. Cov Cath is NOT a football factory. Pretty much every program is established--and does well. Which means that some of the best athletes are never going to make football #1.

 

Again--these are random thoughts that have either crossed my mind (which I personally admit--mean nothing) or I have heard in conversation (which again means nothing). But there could be something to some of them.

On the surface, I would agree. But--remember--it is almost May. Do you really want to set the program backward? (Or at least give the chance that it could go backward). Who are they going to get this quickly? There is one name that may be intriguing based on past performance--but I don't see that guy ever going to Cov Cath.

 

I think that Cov Cath has to sit tight--and let Coach R stay this season--while quietly beating the bushes for a prospect who is going to stick around for a while. It is just a little too late to axe a coach. Besides--the list of coaches who constantly apply for jobs is long and a lot more distinguished than most people will ever realize.

I totally understand that quickslick, and that's definitely the way to go. I'm just saying that I'm really dissapointed they got a guy that seems to have no intention on staying.

I'm not near the situation but would coach Ray step back in for 1 year?

Does anyone have any proof he is looking for a job? Give the guy a break for a minute. I like the way he has opened up the offense over there and I hope he stays. I think he can give HHS a run for their money if they have a good passing game. If he bails now its startover time and that gives the Birds the edge if they didnt already have it.

Whereas that seems a great idea, I'm not sure it serves the best interest of the school or the team to do that at this time. If, and I mean only if it's true that he is looking elsewhere, and it is verifiable, I would wait untill the conclusion of this season. At the same time, I would reconvene the committee in private, to update them on the situation, and then start the process of looking for a new coach. At the conclussion of the season, I would have the AD address the situation in private to hear his side, and also to let him know what we know. He has, if it is true, shown no loyalty to the school and therefore I don't feel it necessary to extend him any. I would let him go..... back to Ohio, on my timetable.

CCH has a great program with great kids, they deserve a coach who feels the same and that wants to be there for the long haul. I can think of a few candidates they passed over that fit that bill.
