What is going on at CovCath?

Featured Replies

SM, not trying to be smart, but outside of Highlands and maybe Beechwood, who in NKY wasn't dazed and confused? CovCath posted some convincing wins during the season:

Boone W 50 -19

Dixie W 37 - 3

NewCath W 42 - 0

Beechwood 28 - 14

Highlands L 28 - 21

Agreed, but outside of Highlands and Beechwood, who in NKY has played with CovCath year in and year out?

IMO the Colonels most impressive win of the year came against NewCath and that was in week two or three. Not saying the Colonels regressed, but IMO CovCath didn't do anything except beat the teams they should have last season.

CovCath sought a new coach who would beat Highlands, LexCath, Rockcastle, and get back to the carpet. The 2006 football seniors were in the third grade the last time CovCath went to the finals.

Also, if CovCath is going to continue to play Moeller, Cincy St. X., et. al., I'm sure the administration, students, and alumni would like to see them win every once in awhile.

No disrespect at all to Boone County, Dixie, or NewCath, but CovCath didn't hire a new coach to beat those teams.

CovCath had the talent to beat Highlands and LexCath.

BUT THEY DIDN'T....................:D :D :D

Come on Charlie, you were messing around with the Irish before your teams biggest game of the year.:D

I but I still got it done!!! And, have a ring to prove it! GO IRISH!

I think people need to realize that when a coach interviews (or any person interviewing for any job) is going to say the things they think the committe wants to hear. There is no one who would get hired saying "Well i think I would like to coach for one year and then return to Ohio if a possibility opens up". So the coach probably never gave any indication that he was only intending to stay for a year or so. But I dont know since I wasnt in the meeting.

My feeling is that if your a coach and you have no business applying for any job that you dont honestly expect to stay at for at least 3 years. Its only the respectable thing to do. Thats just slapping the program in the face wanting to go to a place only to have ambitions of leaving as soon as the next best looking train rolls through. DOnt get me wrong, I think everyone has a right to better themselves and go the best place they feel is possible...but its hard to bash a coach from the beginning when you know that he simply just said what he thought was needed to say to get the job.

Yes, maybe the expectations were different for the coach and they didnt pan out the way he would have liked, but nevertheless, no coach is going to get a job being so honest to say they are only there until something better comes along the following year or two.

I doubt that even a good coach like Bob Redman or Glasier would get a job telling a hiring committee that they will only stay until a better job opens up. You lay out your plans, your philosophies and ideas and if the committee likes them then they get hired. No person doing any hiring should ever hire anyone that doesnt give the impression that they will only be around for a year or two. Otherwise they dont need to be on the hiring committee.

In summary, im sure the coach said he planned on being around a while but as we all know and have seen, ANYTHING is possible after that first year.

My judgment on the situation is still open. Whatever happens, lets just hope CCH remains successful...after all...its not about the coach...its about the guys who suit up and play!

A small correction, the CovCath/NewCath game was Week 4.

Last year, were there any 3A or 4A teams in NKY that beat a team they weren't expected to? Maybe Boone over Scott Co and Ryle over Dunbar, but those were mild upsets. No way they would have compared to CovCath upsetting Cincy X, Moe, or Watterson. I do agree CovCath did not secure a signature victory, but it would not have been easy to do against that schedule.

I didn't think he really spread it out as much as everyone thought he would. There is nothing wrong with a guy looking for a new job. Alot of times fans expect loyalty from coaches, when fans have no loyalty to coaches. Does that make any sense

While I get what you're saying, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a different group of fans and alumni that are more loyal to their school & coaches than Covington Catholic...

I've read this thread with interest and a little disappointment in some ways which I won't go into and have been reluctant to post as I don't think I have a dog in this hunt, but I do want to post that I agree 100% that the CovCath fans and alumni are as loyal to their school, players and coaches as any in the state. And I while I won't presume to speak for any other Highlands fans, its my guess is that they all or certainly a large majority of them would agree with my sentiments.

Which is why when my alma mater's head football coach, after less than a year in his new position, puts in for a different coaching job, I am less than pleased.

"With a Spirit That Will Not Die, or a better opportunity in my eyes arises" is not the school motto last time I checked. :D

Even as a Highlands fan, I thought that this coach seemed to do a very good job this past season. But if the rumors are true on here that he didn't like coaching in Kentucky, then I know I'm not the only one willing to buy his gas for his trip back home (that's the nicest way I can put it).

You chose to only quote a portion of my post, so let me state again, CovCath hired a coach to get them back to the state finals. They didn't hire the guy to beat the teams they beat most years already.

As for CovCath not having a signature win, please understand I still consider the Colonels a top NKY program and didn't mean to imply otherwise. It's getting hard to try to call them a top state program anymore though.

Sure beating X, Moe, or Watterson would have been hard, then why keep playing them? Certainly, why play all three in the same season? IMO limping into the playoffs with 6-4, and 5-5 type records (albeit against great competition) still hurts the program and has to take a toll on player confidence.

Finally, for upsets in AAA and AAAA. Off the top of my head, what about Dixie beating Ryle? Or better yet, Simon Kenton beating Boone County.

The did beat a Beechwood team they have struggled with recently. And getting to the state finals is not easy. That's what makes the run CovCath made under Ray even more impressive. Not to take anything away from those years or make excuses for the current teams, then it came down to CovCath and Highlands for the region. Usually Bell would provide good games in the semi's. With LexCath added it is even trickier to get out of the Region and the Region IV winner (be it Bell, Rockcastle, or Ashland) is still a tough game.

They lost by a fg at LexCath in a game that could have gone either way. LexCath went on to win the state championship in convincing fashion. If CovCath is not a top state program they can't be far off.

I agree. To borrow a line from a Clint Eastwood movie, "A man has to know his limitations."

IMO, those upsets would not have been of the same magnitude of a CovCath win over X, Moe, Watterson or a Highlands win over Lou. X, Colerain, or DeSales would have been. Okay, the SK win over Boone was impressive. Go Neers!

I cannot believe some at Cov Cath actually want to see coach Ray come back even for 1 season. Cov Cath lives to beat Highlands and in coach Ray's tenure they did that very infrequently. The Colonels should beg the new coach to stay.

The new coach didn't exactly get started in the right direction in this category.
HSSB made another point that I meant to say...Ohio (Rodenberg included) does have a collective attitude that KY football doesn't deserve the time of day. You know, since McNick was such a dominant force to be reckoned with.

Most folks in ohio have that attitude about KY in general, not just football. I know I lived in that GOD for saken state for 7 years, glad to be "south of the river" again.
