An assistant made a lateral move to Duke.

Was it a lateral move though? While yes he technically is still an assistant coach, assistant coaches are not all the same. Obviously coach O is the #1 assistant here, and I assume Chin #2. So he might be higher up the ladder as an assistant with Duke, and also probably better pay then too. So not really a lateral move, and more of a progression up the ladder for him in terms of where he ranks as an assistant on a staff.

Brad bailed on his dad and will be coaching at LIU Brooklyn next season.

Smart move. Will see a different type player and learn to manage in a program without mega dollars. He played at Detroit.....but playing and coaching are very different at any level.

It's perceived as a lateral move.  Look at the headlines when you search Jai Lucas.  People only see a UK assistant leaving to become a Duke assistant for a guy who's never been a head coach before.

It's a bad look for Calipari, who is already losing most of his recruiting battles with Duke.

I agree it it is perceived as a bad look. Especially at a time when some fans are looking for any and every reason to be mad at Cal.

The reality of it is assistant coaches leaving for new schools is nothing new. The reason Duke had an opening to begin with, is because they lost an assistant coach who made a “lateral” move in the same conference as Duke to go to Louisville.

Duke made a good hire to replace the assistant they lost to Louisville. Cal will now need to go out and make a good hire himself now.

Why would an assistant make a lateral move?  I ask because it doesn’t feel like a lateral move.

I don't think Lucas sees it as a lateral move.  But the headline is that a UK assistant left to take an assistant job at Duke.

At the end of the day, I don't think this happens in 2015.  But it's happening in 2022 because Duke is beating UK on the floor and in recruiting.

We'll have to see if Scheyer can keep things going.  With the talent he has next year, he should be able to.

Until this season. UK and Duke was basically at the same level in terms of basketball success since 2015. This was the first year since 2015 Duke had did anything better on the court than UK.

They beat us by 34 points in 2018.  They beat us again this season.  With Sharpe not playing, they'll have two consecutive recruiting classes better than ours.  And this upcoming class isn't even comparable.  They just pulled an assistant from our bench.

I just don't like how the program seems to be trending.

I've not given up on Calipari, but I have nowhere near the confidence I have had in him in the past.  He's just not securing the talent he once was.

In 2018 they drilled us to start the year. That UK team kept getting better though, while that Duke team honestly stayed about the same and even got a little worst. That Duke team which was one of the most talented teams ever put together still only made the elite 8, which was the same as UK this year.

So until this past season, UK and Duke literally were basically doing exactly the same since 2015. Now obviously this past season Duke definitely did better with their final four appearance and our first round loss.

I agree that the trend is not good. Duke reluctantly bought in to Cal's one and done recruiting philosophy and now have taken it over. I am not sure the value that one and done all in has toward winning a title. Duke and UK each have one title using that approach. Yes, it can get you a title but is it the best way?

Cal has either lost the recruiting formula or he is trying to reinvent his approach using the transfer portal. I really wish Sharpe had stayed as I would love to see what happens with three one and dones added to transfers. This year Cal was short on the one and done talent. Next year he will have 2 one and dones along with experienced transfers and a couple roster keepers in Collins and Ware. I think 3 one and dones is the formula to win a title but 2 one and dones might be enough if the experience is good enough. Cal is trying to figure out how to get it done in this new NIL world.

It doesn’t matter if One and Done is the best way or not.  The fans of these two schools dictate that they must use the One and Done recruiting model in order to satisfy their enthusiasm.
